Thanks, I've scoured the pages and now know which book I could find it in if I decide to buy, but I'm hoping it won't come to that!
(cheapskate - or what?!)

Someone sang this at Wareham Wail this year and I can't remember who. You could try posting to that thread and see if anyone can help.

Why not just stick your hand in your pocket and buy the book. All of Les's booklets are full of lunacy worth reading. Well worth the cash.
Quack!

I've also heard Abuwood sing it: you could try a PM to her

Or, if you prefer to hear things sung, it's on the Mrs Ackroyd CD "Tubular Dogs"

Les's books are well worth a buy, I think I have a wee small total or 12 now, I think there are over 50!
Only £3.50 if I remember correctly, bargain for the good read you get, I'm currently trying to learn "Don't play me your Concertina", I'm going to dedicate it to Chris Sherburn!

There's a generous 2-minute sound sample at CD Baby:

BREAKING WIND SUDDENLY
Words, Les Barker. Tune, BLOW THE WIND SOUTHERLY.

Breaking wind suddenly, suddenly, suddenly
Tends to exclude one from society.
Breaking wind suddenly, suddenly, suddenly,
I blamed the dog but they knew it was me.
A friend said to me there were jobs in the offing,
So I hurried to town as an interviewee.
I was almost employed when my hopes were destroyed
By a thund'rous eruption. They knew it was me.

Breaking wind suddenly, suddenly, suddenly
Somehow I feel did not help my cause.
Breaking wind suddenly, suddenly, suddenly,
I spelled out fart with impeccable noise Morse.
I knew they were pleased with answers I'd given,
And all were [impressed?]....

[As sung by Alison Younger on "Tubular Dogs," Mrs Ackroyd Records, DOG 014, 1999.]

Well,I've tried several times to purchase the lyrics from the shop on Les Barker's website, but all to no avail as it falls down when you ask how to pay.
I've asked everyone I know, trawled Ebay, and searched through dozens of bookshelves in local music shops. No,they couldn't order it.
A friend will be seeing him later in the year at a festival and can buy a copy of the book for me then, but it will be too late for this particular occasion.
Does no-one have the words? (I'll still be buying the book anyway, honest! as there's more in there that I'd like to have a go at. )
Surely someone must have it?!
It appears in Irritable Bow wow Syndrome and Mrs. Ackroyd's Occasional Table Book.
I really think that the local W.I. need to hear this song....

Try emailing Les directly at les@mrsackroyd.com - he welcomes missives from fellow loonies and may be unaware that his website is falling down on the paying in bit.

This sounds suspiciously related to the hoary old party record, "The Crepitation Contest," or something akin to that, wherein imaginary contestants in a boxing or wrestling ring vied in an attempt to artfully and loudly break wind "without incident." Surely, someone was "moved" to celebrate such a thing in song.......

Don't tell him I sent you!

Way back in his dim and distant past, he wrote one where the pay-off line was 'abcess make the fart go Honda', which is similar in content to the Crepitation Contest mentioned above. It's in one of the earliest ones but I can't remember which.

Got a reply from Les today, but he's in Oregon so can't send out anything until beginning of July which will be too late for this event as I need to learn it NOW!
PLE-e-e-e-e-e-ASE has anyone got it?
(The website still isn't working properly, I'm now reporting it to Abicat who deal with the sales...)

Liz, do you and Les have history?

So he made it into the States this time then!

Yes... we have... *history*.... he goes pale and quivers whenever I'm in the audience. Purchase 'A Cardi and Bloke' on CD and you'll find out how I got my name.

BREAKING WIND SUDDENLY by Les Barker, from Irritable Bow-wow Syndrome.

Breaking wind suddenly, suddenly, suddenly
Tends to exclude one from society.
Breaking wind suddenly, suddenly, suddenly,
I blamed the dog but they knew it was me.
A friend said to me there were jobs in the offing,
So I hurried to town as an interviewee.
I was almost employed when my hopes were destroyed
By a thund'rous eruption. They knew it was me.

Breaking wind suddenly, suddenly, suddenly
Somehow I feel did not help my cause.
Breaking wind suddenly, suddenly, suddenly,
I spelled out 'fart' in impeccable Morse.
I knew they were pleased with answers I'd given,
And all were impressed by my honours degree,
Then my hopes went under; I said it was thunder
But that was a blunder, they knew it was me.

Breaking wind suddenly, suddenly, suddenly;
Rippling the surface of their cups of tea.
Breaking wind suddenly, suddenly, suddenly
I knew I'd not be their new employee.
And later that evening, my old trouser coughing
Gave warning to ships on the deep rolling sea;
A great clap of thunder boomed all down the Humber;
I blame the dog, but they know it was me.

Note the slight difference in the second verse, than posted above. Sorry, it took me a while to find the book. There is apparently a way to get the lyric from his website, but I've never managed it yet.

The Four Fools Folk Club was looking for a new venue. A possible pub was found, and an evening of folk song was arranged to try out the upstairs room.

When it came to Alison Younger's turn, she sang "Breaking Wind Suddenly" to the attentive members there. While she was singing it, the landlady came in, collected the empty glasses and left the room.

What she said when she got downstairs, I don't know. But the club continued its search for a new home.
