The current policy is devastating travelling musicians. This is the email address for the Rt. Hon. Douglas Alexander who is apparently responsible for airline safety. He is Secretary of State for Transport. Please spread the word that he is the person to write to. According to this news item dated the date before your post, musicians will be allowed to fly with their instruments from next week. Still, I agree with your sentiment - I am sure it was possible to check the instruments effectively rather than ban them. |

Solution: make the traveler PLAY the instrument at check-in to prove it hasn't been heavily tampered with. Perhaps it wouldn't catch every little bomb hidden in a pickup, but, a sax stuffed with plastique would certainly sound bad. An added benefit, some music and diversion for the poor sods standing in line for check-in! |
