Travelling with instruments

Hi,

Even if you don't play a string instrument, please send a short email to the below address insisting on exemptions for instruments as hand luggage on planes. The current policy is devastating travelling musicians.

This is the email address for the Rt. Hon. Douglas Alexander who is
apparently responsible for airline safety. He is Secretary of State for Transport. Please spread the word that he is the person to write to. I hope that he will get plenty of emails.......Thanks!

This email oroginally came to me from Simon Morris Director
J. & A. Beare Ltd, London, UK Tel: 020 7307 9666 Fax: 020 7307 9651

A fraction late, GUEST. According to this news item dated the date before your post, musicians will be allowed to fly with their instruments from next week.

Still, I agree with your sentiment - I am sure it was possible to check the instruments effectively rather than ban them.

I can just hear the wheels turning in the minds of the shoe bombers, as to how they can fit up instruments to blow up.

Solution: make the traveler PLAY the instrument at check-in to prove it hasn't been heavily tampered with. Perhaps it wouldn't catch every little bomb hidden in a pickup, but, a sax stuffed with plastique would certainly sound bad.    An added benefit, some music and diversion for the poor sods standing in line for check-in!

Transatlantic fliers beware. You may be able to take an instrument into, say, England, but that doesn't necessarily mean you'll be able to take it back on the return trip.
