BS: Car Quiz

16 Sep 06 - 12:17 PM (#1836028)
Subject: BS: Car Quiz
From: Nigel Parsons

All answers are models of cars (with my usual warning about spelling variations). You are not required to give the maker's names, although "I've got a little list" in case they're wanted.

Please don't post answers, give others thinking time. You can PM me if you're stuck and want a quick(er) answer, or post to the list to claim 50% or 75% success (or100%). or to say which questions are really bugging you. But Please don't give it all away too soon.

Part of the problem for us in the States is that a number of those aren't imported here and some others are known by different names although it's the same model.

Ok, admittedly somewhat Euro-centric, First results are Bassic with 20/20, The Walrus with 19/20, & John on the Sunset Coast with 11/20.
I have been given an answer to ~10 which I hadn't spotted, which I've accepted, although I was looking for a more Classical word.

Vectis 20/20

Squeaky Liz: I mentioned the liberties I take with spellings at the start.

19, is causing problems connecting to a car, this is a Peugeot model.

I've been told that #8 is Jowett (UK) & AMC (US) but I already had that match.

And some fine cars you build there Jenny!!! General Motors owns Holden and brought one of them here as the new Pontiac GTO and it just smoked everything right out of the box, virtually bulletproof.

We ourselves have an Aussie car that Karen drives to work. The parent company is Mitsubishi but our Diamante (called a Vicara in Oz) never saw Japan. A great car......and I have worked around cars all of my professional life. It was built to compete with Lexus and Infiniti but never caught on and I have no idea why not! Luxurious, powerful, good handling, and pretty economical....hard to beat!

Karen likes the Diamante better than her previous BMW. There is even a "Product of Australia" sticker in the window. Karen calls her Sheila(:<))

I'd hope so. I suspect the answer given was a mistake anyway. I've just tried a google search for "vauxhall Scirocco" (quotes included) and it's only yeilded 2 results, neither of which are convincing. Plus, thinking about it, there would probably be arguements over 2 makers using the same model name.

That made me wonder about the Peugeot Zest versus Honda Zest minicar. "Honda Zest" gets 13,600 and "Peugeot Zest" only gets 748.

Okay Nige....What about it? Do I get credit for Honda Zest and VW Scirocco?

Subject: RE: BS: Car Quiz
From: GUEST,Jon

I can't say I've heard of either of those but if they are more recent, I wouldn't expect to have. I went for "knowing every car" as it were as a kid to not having a clue what's on the road now.

Had a little bit of a shock when Pip had her Citroen ZX written of and the insurance co let her use a Vauxhall Zafira while she was off the road. I just took it for granted it would be a similar sized hatch - turned out it was a 7 seater "people carrier". Nice car though...

Subject: RE: BS: Car Quiz
From: Bassic

As NP seems not to be around at the moment maybe I can clear up spaws question.
Strictly speaking, Peugeot used the "Zest" name, not for a specific car, but as a "trim and equipement pack" description for "budget" versions of several cars in the range. It was used a bit like "GTI" is used for "sports" versions of different models in a manufacturers range. The Honda Zest is a model in its own right however. And yes, to the best of my knowlege there was no Vauxhall only a VW version of no.12 so I suspect a typo ;-).

I gave the same answers as you did spaw, to those two questions and got credit for the full 20, so I think you can safely say you have got them right too.

Thanks Bassic! On a few I just didn't know the clue so I was out to lunch on those. Here's what I answered on the others:

1....Triumph Stag
2....VW Polo
3....Mercury Capri (English Ford?) Here the name was on a Mercury
4....This one beats me!!!
5....Lancia Scorpio
6....My left nut?
7....I thought it was Cherry but what car is that?
8....AMC Javelin (at least here it was AMC
9....Austin Allegro?
10...Vauxhall Victor
11...Say what?
12...I think you're after VW Sirocco but Maserati,Lamborghini, and others have used wind names like Bora,Diablo,Typhoon,Zephyr, etc.
13...Uh...Maybe Trooper, like in Isuzu?
14...Austin Maestro
15...Citroen Picasso
16...The GREAT Mini Cooper...now brought to us by BMW with just about as much fun as the original (even with all the Paddy Hopkirk goodies!)
17...SEAT Ibiza
18...Vauxhall Astra
19...I think this is a Honda model but not here...
20...Neal's Cock?
