You won't need to do an unadulterated plug, when you are the main guest at Market Rasen Folk Club at Faldingworth Village Hall on Friday October the 6th Breezy. Thats my job :-)

Well what?

Floor spots by Simon Hopper who came with a case load of CDs !!

Dont know about how others feel, but I couldnt do that, I mean if there is a guest artiste appearing surely he should have sole rights to sell his merchandise, its his gig and his market place

So I didnt sell any CDs.

I didnt have any with me anyway, but only I knew that

Can you imagine what certain artistes would say?

Hey Harvey, whats your take?

Janis Haves also came along and did 2 spots, I like her song dedicated to her grandfather, very touching

Then there were the regular club residents

Guru and Moses were the Breezettes and added variety in part two

Richard Atkins negotiated a late finish with the landlord and i drove away at midnight.

the Staines folk club is always friendly and warm, so we opened the windows when it got hot

Hope Barry and Geraldine enjoy their trip to the U S of A, and thanks to Barry for being a charming M C

the room is a small one therefore a very intimate setting, so one has to keep the guitar level down in order that the vocals can be clearly heard, no natural reverb due to the furnishings

I really enjoyed myself and hope others did too.

Now Anthony John Clarke at Windward, St Albans, this coming Sunday 24th

and then its Dave Gibb, very funny Irvineshire guy

Hmm, never heard of that 'rule', i.e. guests having exclusive rights to sell their CDs. I guess there might be a few who would insist on that, but IME the support acts will flog their CDs as well as the main guests. I've never seen anyone complain about the arrangement. I would regard any attempt by the guest to restrict sales to their own CDs as protectionist and against the spirit of the folk movement (or something like that).

Whenever I appeared as support for someone, I always asked them if it would be OK for me to announce that I also have CDs. To a man they agreed as a matter of course, and artists like Vin Garbutt, Eric Bogle, Robb Johnson etc even offered to put them on the same table next to their merchandise.

I agree partly with Scrump - each and everyone has the right to sell CDs at a concert; but Breezy has a point too: I would defer to the guest as regards drawing the attention of the audience to the fact. Not as a right, just as common curtesy, as they are rightly hoping for some income from album sales to supplement their (sometimes meagre) fee.

Once or twice, when supporting a guest at one or other of my "home" clubs, people brought my also having albums for sale to the audience's attention - with the kindest of intentions. In such cases, I reply jokingly with something like "...and the price is £x plus showing me one of (guest)'s albums" to make the point that I would like the guest to have priority in sales.

Well scump, now you have, its not a 'free mmarket' its blatant bad manners and has nothing to do with 'protectionism'

The main guest isnt there for a competition

Its also totally disrespectfull to the main guest.

No wonder some major artistes are asking for there to be no support acts and to ask for exclusive rights to the selling of merchandise.

When one goes along as a floor singer then one should maybe exercise a hint of humbleness.

Me , humble, respectful, ha

Brill night Breese, and thanks to Janice Harvey for the Gandfarther one ,it was special for me. OK sell CDs with discetion. I thought a tad over the top having seen Ian Bruce and Chris Leslie restricted to one spot at Banbury Folk Club in the past .The booked Guest is the one to see !!! Folk Friendly Landlord at this venue who was happy to let things run till 11.30. Far better than the last Venue for this club.

Maybe it is a matter of courtesy as George says. But I still feel surprised that an artist would somehow resent others selling CDs alongside theirs. As I said in a similar thread elsewhere, if your CD is any good people will buy it regardless of any 'competition'. I can't help thinking that anyone who would prefer to have exclusive sales rights is lacking confidence in the quality of their own product.

But what do I know, I don't have any CDs to sell anyway :(

I agree with breezy its unethical ,and bad manners.its the guests prerogative to sell his own c d s , anyone else apart from a charity [ lf they ask permission]should find their own gigs to sell c d s.
the sales from a guests c ds may be what makes the gig profitable after travelling expenses. DickMiles

I did have some cds, - 3 - but did not feel like displaying them as it was a small club and didnt want to make any further demands on the members pockets as it is a modest friendly club.

Felt it was innapropriate, I'm not as pushy as some people think

sold one in the street yesterday

cant be greedy

oi R A, its a 'z'

I agree that the main guest should be the one to sell his CDs MOSTLY. If a support or floor singer has CDs to sell then there shouldn't be a problem if they have the courtesy to ask the main guest first. TOTALLY not on to simply sell without asking.

I would think most main guests would be confident enough to allow others to sell their CDs though.

Courtesy is the key here I think.
