From: GUEST,Popinjay Before you raise up your hands and say 'how could you' (post such a thread), I want you to know that I sincerely believe Keith to be a very fine person. However I think his humour is rubbish. This is a thread for all those who think Keith's sense of humour is rubbish (though I expect a few might want to come to his defence). Why should only those people who like Keith's malarkey express themselves (by laughing during his acts)? Why must a significant minority leave the audience in silence, under some pretext of 'getting another beer?' This thread is for you. Please don't feel Keith will be offended by this thread, he will not be I am sure, and it might be one thing he could joke about that might be funny to us all. |

From: Mo the caller At some folk festivals you can hardly avoid him, if you go to a concert to see the other acts you either have to sit through it all yet again or climb over everyone and hang around outside. I know the kids love him, but he's not to my taste. I don't much care for people telling me to do silly things, with the threat of embarassing me if I don't (says she, who earns money on a Saturday night persuading people to get out of their seats to do very sensible and elegant things, and who wouldn't dream of embarassing anyone!!!) As for Badger, I don't know what you are complaining about, you didn't need to open the thread, and you haven't answered the question or given your opinion of Keith's humour. People either love it or hate it, and those who love it are loud in his praise, festival organisers need to hear all views |

I'm not complaining, simply observing that if a person sits through an act by a performer they do not enjoy, they can hardly expect to be entertained - but that is not the performers fault. I opened the thread because I know Keith and enjoy his act. Why did you? As for the questions - the answers are so glaringly obvious they are not worth mentioning. Why leave under a pretext though? If anyone bothers to ask why you are leaving, tell them. |

I do study the mechanisms thereof. It is quirky, off the wall, and his mind is lightning quick. It is also enjoyed by many so it is popular. Now define rubbish. If rubbish is anything you don't find funny then you are right in one very narrow context. YOU. Have you considered that your sense of humour is also relatively unique (sic). Keith is an acquired taste and a lot have acquired it. Long since. And I have to say his turnover of joke/patter/routines is also key to the act. He hasn't gone stale as far as I see but then I don't see him at every opportunity. |

There are many acts I don't like, but would never start a thread about them. This is different, can't you see? So hold fire until we hear from Keith. As a bunch they could teach a few adults a thing or two. From: Fran Keith Donnelly has written some great serious songs, Laura, The Hunter and Two Tall Trees are my favourites . You don't get to hear these live very often as festival organisers and goers expect him to make them laugh and so he has to play the funny man. He was telling us once he had a spot at a festival allocated for him to sing his serious singer/songwriter material. It was billed in the programme as "The Serious Side of Keith Donnelly" unfortunately the MC was not aware and on introducing him bet the audience he would not last 5 mins, in fact he did last the whole set and some of the audience went away disappointed that he had not done his slice of bacon and other favourite silly stuff.. Keith makes a living from writing jokes and gags and selling them on , also he has written some Game shows and has also written some very good children's songs. A couple of times I have witnessed him coming out and entertaining the queues waiting to get into final concerts at some of the bigger festivals. One festival that I will not name the people in the queue were getting very irate as sound checking was late and the bar was also in the venue and so people could not access the drinks either. Keith came out with his guitar and started a sing song in the queue and diffused the situation so well that no-one noticed when they eventually opened the doors. More artists at festivals should be like him. Sorry to waffle on |

Come on, this is your chance to shine; if it's good all can have a laugh at my expense, but at least we will be laughing (I'll admit to you if it's good, even if it cuts to the quick). You should take a leaf out of Nellie Clatt's book, and Goik's who's having a try. So let's lighten up a bit and have a bit of a fun for Keith's sake. Wouldn't it be ironic if I congratulate a poster for their wit and it turns out to be Keith Donnnely? Perhaps he could do a 'make me laugh' workshop for those like me who don't get it. We want to understand Keith, we really do. |

Further to Fran's lovely post (some of you could learn a lot from Fran), I too have been 'entertained' on a number of occasions by Mr Donnely, (whether I wanted it or not), while waiting in the queue for the last performance of the evening. Everyone having to go 'WOAH, WOAH' in unison can become a little tedious after a while. Missed a couple of good performances like that! I agree with Fran that Keith is wonderful with children, but the same type of humour at festivals for adults just doesn't do it for me, though I accept that a lot of people do like him (Just wish you'd explain why instead of all the abuse – granted Mr Red tried initially before drifting off somewhat). |

I was awakened at Sidmouth festival after the Late Night Extra by a whole load of teenagers singing 'Everybody wants to be a bear'. This is significant because a. the young folkies are interested in this aspect of folk and it brings them to folk festivals with their parents who want to see the boring stuff and b. he's never been asked, so has never been to do Sidmouth!
