That she kept her head high and maintained her own integrity makes a good story of a fascinating life. Here is what Art had posted several years ago as he mentioned above: "Tokyo Rose was a very nice person from my experiences with her. She had a Japanese import shop on Belmont Avenue in Chicago when I was in high school -- 1956-1959 -- and I'd go in and we'd talk. Her real name was IDA TAGURI. She was an American of Japanese ancestry who went back to Japan to take care of an ailing mother---then all hell broke loose as the war transpired. I have more than a passing interest in the War in the Far East, as my Dad was a P.o.W. of the Japanese for three & half years, so you can imagine my sentiments on that subject. The woman was another victim of war, though in a different way. A shame that she spent so many years in prison. |
