And V I cant help noticing yet again such very good value for money.
This is an amazing night of music for such a small individual outlay.
Well done on driving down the cost of High quality live performance in the area mate.

Helian Keys don't carry spare socks, sorry!
Is only my 'other' band that carries spares for those who have cold feet and Terry usually ends up with those!
Looking forward to hearing Mr Breezy as well as the other acts.

Useless piece of information for you....I notice from the the link you posted, Villan, that he does a lot in the Padstow area. That used have a brilliant accordion shop but I think it has moved to nearby Wadebridge. I bet you are all thinking of rushing there straight away!
:-)
We go on holiday down to that area a lot so will keep a look out for Mr B next time we go there!

Welcome to the big build-up

yes its all true

except

its Leukaemia Busters children's charity to be precise, and the sale of any CD will help !! hint hint £6 min

The music shop in Wadebridge is now a Hobgobber, previously t' was 'Old Gold Alan's Accordion emporium ' he had an antiques shop in Padstow before that and discovered the accordion bug while there, then moved to Wadebridge, then sold up.

he hosts a music night in St Kew Highway on Tuesdays

I've gone back to my Chris Cross Dreadnought these days

Lokking forward to visiting pastures anew

thanks Villy

Hopefully, fingers crossed....Mr Breezy and I have something in common, as in, both going to play a decent set at MRFC on Friday, lol! (Although I need the additional help of my long-suffering singing partner Mr HK...instead of doing a solo set..... :-)   )
Back to the thread title in one post, are u impressed?!!!

Terry & Gwenda Cater will be in charge of PA

The running order will be

First Half
Gwenda & Terry Cater
Helian Keys

Second Half
No Fixed Abode

Please remember that the evening starts at 8:00pm now, and it would be very helpful for Terry & Gwenda if all performers have had their sound check well before that time.

Thanks Hamish, are you the Hamish who was at Gainsbr' last week? Sounded like you had a good gig. Still haven't made it to Gainsbr' club yet, will have to try. This 'back of beyond', slightly hilly in places, Lincolnshire' has too many good places to go for music and not enough nights in the week!

V how come we get English Scotts and Welsh performers at MRFC but apart from Cara we dont get any Irish bands?
Or have I just been unlucky in the couple of years we have been attending.
Maybe it is cost of trip from ireland?
Maybe you could give Christy a ring and see if he is at a loose end any time soon

Cost would be the problem Twangy, especially if they have to fly from Ireland.
I don't book people becuase of where they are born. That has never come into it.

Does that count?

Cheeky bugger Daithi. :-) I was in touch with Ian, but certain issues meant he couldn't play for the moment.

You have had about 4 X 25 minute floorspots :-)

I was going to mention you.

Likewise Anthony John Clarke is Irish.

So in reality Twangy hasn't got it right :-)

Me! Wrong?
Surely not.
I have missed all 4 of the GTTD spots in two years?
I just would love to hear some of the old standardsis all.
Its not the same on recordings is it?
AJC deffo Irish but is not the sort of music I meant.
I thought he did a brilliant set for us.
Still we will wait and see.
Hey I wonder if Big AL will travel down for the evening I suppose is a bit of a way for him If he still poorly loik.
Any hoo we are gonna get ready early and see how we go on with this lurgy so can we have quarantine area please V?

hi all you may have noticed we sneaked off early it was the effects of the lurgy I am afraid.
But
I thought Mr Blanks did a really good job of filling in for Terry and Gwenda with a wonderful set of songs done in his own inimitable style
and the song about the lads from Fulstow was all I had hoped.
It is good to see the old war horse getting back in his stride and bringing a certain air of quality to the procedings.
Next came Helian Keys.
I am as you probably predjudiced as I have had the pleasure of actualy playing occasionaly with these two characters.
I thought their set was a realy good one with the usual mix of self penned and thoughtful covers.
I know Helen thinks she needs a PA when she sings but I happen to know she has a beautiful voice and she should let it go more often.
As always piano but not overpowering and never in conflict for attention with Ians smooth tones.
Well done guys.
Stitherum were the last of the music we managed to stay for and I thought their set was the best from them so far,but then I always think that.
The choice of materiel, and the delivery are so well done that you feel drawn into a sort of intimacy,as if you were all sat in a small cozy pub with gales and snow outside, but who care because you are in the warm with freinds.
I am also envious of Mr Sooz and his "just enough" guitar playing.
He makes it look so easy I hate him.
We had a wonderful time and......
Managed to sneak out with a box of chocs and without paying.....
Sorry V was an honest oversight that we will rectify at the earliest possible moment.
Thanks to all for making us feel welcome and for the offer of accomodation for the festival .
That was completely unexpected and a very nice gesture.
We may not be the biggest folk club around but the quality of the music and the warmth of the welcome are second to none.
I was very much looking forward to seeing Terry and Gwenda and we both hope Terry is back on form soon.
SO to bed with hot Jamesons and recording of Helian keys LOL
leaving someone else to tell us what a great second half we missed.

To carry on where Twangy left off. Blimey he doesn't pay and only does half a job on reporting :-) Get well Twangy.

Una & Tony (No Fixed Abode) Lovely Irish voice (take note Twangy) from Una and some smashing sensitive guitar work from Tony. Excellent set. They are big fans of Jack Hudson, just as John Blanks & Big Al Whittle are. It was nice to hear the different versions of the same Jack Hudson song by JB & NFA.

John Breeze is the breeze knees :-). Such a good voice and smashing guitar work. Once agin an excellent set. Good on yer Breezy, you can go home with head held high. Phoned the Lincolnshire border guards to tell them to let you through cause yer was damn good.

What a really good night, and I have to say with all genuinness that Mrs Sooz was an excellent MC. Impeccable timing and a good word for all the performers. Well done Sooz.

Nice turnout and they got a brillaint night of musical variety. Oops am I allowed to make comments like that without being biased.? :-)

And so to bed said Zebadee boing boing boing

If you all enjoy it, it is my pleasure to put the effort in. I am always bowled over by the quality of performers we get at MRFC. Makes it all worth doing.

Just been listening to Breezy sing Empty Handed written by George Papvgeris. Such lovely lyrics and beautiful song.

Empty Handed (copyright G.Papavgeris, 2002)

Again the rains are late this year, again the fields are dry and crops are dead
Today the bank refused to give me an extension for the loan
No money in my pocket for the fare
No friendly face with me my dissapointment to share
In failure and in poverty you always feel alone.

Its not the setting sun that makes my face look red
You rich will never understand it
And if I walk as if my shoes were made of lead
Its the shame of coming back home emptyhanded.

My arms and back are strong, and I have worked all hours that the good Lord gave
But for my efforts I have had so very little in return
This soil is too unyielding to the plough
Too hard to soften with the sweat that trickles from my brow
The crop so weak that there is almost nothing left to burn.

Its not the setting sun that makes my face look red
You rich will never understand it
And if I walk as if my shoes were made of lead
Its the shame of coming back home emptyhanded.

My savings went to buy this land, but all its good for is to bury me
Unless I find a way to make it pay that could be very soon
The future that I dreamed as a young man
Is withered like the crops beneath the unrelenting sun
The very one that makes this such a lovely afternoon.

Its not the setting sun that makes my face look red
You rich will never understand it
And if I walk as if my shoes were made of lead
Its the shame of coming back home emptyhanded.

So what would happen if I just went right on walking till I disappeared
And would they miss me if I had a mind the countryside to roam
They followed me with hopes for Paradise
The one thing I cant do right now is look them in the eyes
I wish this road would swallow me and never take me home.

Its not the setting sun that makes my face look red
You rich will never understand it
And if I walk as if my shoes were made of lead
Its the shame of coming back home emptyhanded.

Forgot to mention that I thought Mark Addison/John Blanks song for the final of the BBC Lincolnshire Write a song competition, was very good. Thats 2 I have heard, the other by Dave & Julie Evardson was very good as well.
Tried to get Phil brougham to do his last night, but he declined. Bet that one is a good en as well.

If that is the standard of the finalists, tghen it should be a very good evening.

Good stuff from all concerned - great to hear Breezy again, what a wonderful selection of songs and what a superb, accomplished performer - he puts some of the 'A-List' folkie super-stars to shame. Good 'un Breezy, can't wait for the next time!

Enjoyed getting back in harness, although a bit rusty! The audience were very nice to me, thanks yo' lot! Hopefully my gastric organs will now start behaving themselves after my two residency gigs in Nottingham, and I'll be back on the 'circuit' administering my own brand of anaesthetic to any audience daft enough to give me a spot! :-)
