As well as being an act of aesthetic vandalism, it's also environmentally very unfriendly. Unfortunately the goverment has made it a requirement to use either a Fensa registered company or obtain building regs when replacing windows - which has given the uPVC window trade great service whilst undermining thousands of jobbing joiners who have been making and installing timber windows for centuries. However I suggest you find a good local joiner with a small workshop, making bespoke frames, complying with all the new Part L and Part F regs, and which will meet your individual requirements and not ruin the look of your house. if you have trouble locating one, ring your local planning department and ask to talk to the conservation officer. S/he should point you in the right direction. What sort of single-glazed windows do you have currently? |

My house is 1930s+ and the white upvc looks quite good on other houses on the estate. The windows have been replaced before (20 years ago perhaps) but only single glazed which seems a strange decision to me. |

Ah well... ;-) If you're on more of a budget and your existing windows are OK, consider secondary glazing instead. It's actually better than double-glazing for sound insulation, and it's a damn sight cheaper too. It doesn't look as good though. I get "Which?" and all the country-wide window-fitting franchises have had bad write-ups. Local places always seem to come out better for service/quality, and usually for cost too. I could let you know who did ours, but they're in Cambridgeshire so unlikely to be much use to you. Graham. |

I don't know if they go as far as Sheffield... but they are Yorkshire based... they offered an excellent service and I believe very good value... my three bedroom house with a bay window & back & front doors cost £3000. |
