BS: Tech: DB2 on Linus

This is really technical, so I made it BS as well.

Does anyone have experience running IBM's DB2 on Linux? How well does it work? How easy is it to retrieve data for reports?

Thank y'all.

Had some doubts about Charlie Brown, too.

I think you made this thread too exclusive Rap.... :-)

Intentionally so, 'cause it's really a techy question. See, I may be running DB2 on RH (or other) Linux in a few months and right now I need all the info I can get.

Nice. Unfortunately, I think he means this one.

I do use a database on linux but it's MySQL.

That's it, Jon (although I wouldn't say no to the Aston-Martin, hint hint).

Unfortunately, MySQL isn't an option. It's either DB2 on Linux or Windows or Windows SQL on Windows.

And I really prefer Linux, only I also really need to know how well it works, how easy data retrieval is, how reliable the setup is, and stuff like that. Twenty libraries will be depending upon it.

I have no idea. However, since IBM is pushing linux these days, compatability shouldn't be an issue. Is there a user's forum to check?

My experience of proprietary databases is that they rarely fit a specific data model.

It is usually quicker and cheaper to build a database that suits your data than to try to learn a generic one and then bend it to meet your needs.

I'm not sure about that but in any case, I would guess Rapaire already has his application plus a couple of suitable database systems to chose for this application.

Pretty much has that is.

Yeah, I can go MSSQL on Windows 2003 server, or wait for Vista Server, or run Oracle on Windows, or DB2 on Red Hat, etc. We're currently on Sybase over Windows 2000 Server, but the app software will change next June and I'm trying to figure out the best way to jump.

Going DB2 over Linux would mean no conversion costs, but I'm not familiar with this setup (give me something like U2 over AIX and I'll make it dance!)

Hence my question....
