Oy! Memory playing tricks, no wonder I couldn't find it. Dave Burland it was of course... I used to have that on vinyl, I wonder if I've got the tape somewhere.

Any idea who R.D.Puddefoot is/ was?

I know someone who has some "unofficial" recordings of a "Wag" Puddifoot from the Thame/Aylesbury sort of area. Might be him.

Hi Paul,

The recording I know the song from is Jack-in-the-Green by Magpie Lane as sung by Andy Turner - these are the words he sings:

Says I to myself let's go to Thame Fair
So I went to the field to get the grey mare

Chorus:
Come on old lady, come over old lady
Let's have us some fun over there
Here away, there we're off to Thame Fair
Foldy Roldy Diddle-de-dee

The day it was hot, the road it was long
We supped at the bottle as we rode along

Chorus

We hadn't gone far, about a mile
When I met a young woman and how she did smile

Chorus

She says kind sir I'm off to Thame fair
I says jump up behind me and I'll take you there

Chorus

She put her young arms around me waist
Me face it did blush and me heart it did race

Chorus

On yonder green bank, twas there we laid down
She gave me a kiss and I gave her a crown

Chorus

Some of my transcribing might be a bit off - but I hope that helps.

Cheers

John S

Another recording of the song was by The New Heritage Singers (Keith Marsden and Brian Senior. Their alternative ending, if my memory serves me correctly, is to bang the guitar or table instead if singing crown and after the last chorus they sang, "and they never got to Thame Fair."
