BS: Battlestar Galactica Goes Dreary

From being the most exciting show on TV, Battlestar Galactica has become IMPORTANT, and has lost all its considerable power. It has now taken on the mantle of one of those World War II Nazi resistance films and everyone is now deeply betraying everyone else.

It may be a guy thing, but I was happier when they were blowing up spaceships. It is now all about the perils of interbreeding.   I won't even get started on all the weird decisions about who pairs up with whom. It is as if the creators decided to commit very interesting suicide.

Oh well.

yours,

Peter T.

The show started out about hope. The hope of a sorely wounded human race setting out in search of a chance to survive, then looking for something better than mere survival. There doesn't seem to be much hope now, and what there is isn't enjoyable. I hope they can kill the depair in a great epiphanic event in which the cylons acquire a critical mass of 'clue' and evolve beyond being evil, no-sense-of-humor, bad-guy machine-people. I hope that one day, they'll all look around, smack themselves in the forhead head, and say, "Frackin' DUH!!! What are we doing this for!?"

The depair and gloom is hopefully just part of a phase the show is going through to provide contrast to the surge of renewed hope they're planning. It better be.

They still haven't gotten to the part with the angels.

There seems to be a lot of extra punishing of babies and women going on.

I am relieved to hear that others are as troubled by this as I am. I have waited with bated breath the return of this series. But I am really disappointed with where it is heading. I hope to hell they get back to the "horse opera" aspects a bit more. I can live with the "brood mood" if it is coupled with the escapist sci fi that we really tune in for.

All the best,

Mick

I fail to understand the craze for remaking bad 70's TV. Next thing you know, it'll be Star Trek: The 38th spin-off, set in orbit around an enormous, aging star. But enough about Shatner.....

I agree - this last episode was pretty grim but I do hope that it will pick up speed as it goes along.

Never got into Battlestar Galactica - but from this thread it sounds like it might be getting more interesting.   I get bored with stuff about blowing up spaceships, and much prefer intrigue and heartache.

For those kind of reasons Deep Space Nine was overall the best Star Trek series for me.

Horses for courses.

Here in Oz we seem to be well behind where you lot are, but that's not unusual. (The bad stuff to come out of the USA gets here instantly, but anything worthwhile takes months, years or doesn't arrive at all.)

I'm disappointed to read the above. I've been enjoying this show a lot. I hope the producers don't try to get too clever.

Star Trek DS9 was the best, but only because they pinched the plot from Babylon 5!

And Babylon 5 was just about the best of the sci-fi shows in recent years!

Oh jacqui, you're going to have started her off on a comparison of the relative merits of Dr Who, and Babylon 5.....

only because they pinched the plot from Babylon 5 I thought it was the other way round. Not that I'm worried either way. Good stories need to be used a few times.

Kevin - they both came out in early 1993 so I don't think there was any way that either could have pinched the plot from the other.

Both were very good but I think that B5 was better because the whole 5 year series was planned from the beginning.

Not sure that is the case with Battlestar Galactica but I'll keep watching to see if it picks up.

No Strazynski pitched the idea to Paramount (Or whoever makes Star Trek) but they said no, then he tried Warner Bros who said yes, then when B5 was in pre production rumours of a new ST came out, and guess what the plot was amazingly similar to the one Strazynski pitched! Hmmmmmm

BTW it is impossible to compare B5 and Who, they are both fantastic!

I'll agree with you there Crystal - they really have updated the Doctor.

the whole 5 year series was planned from the beginning.

It got a bit scrappy and ramshackle toward the end, I felt... (So did Deep Space 9 for the matter. I think that is probably a consequence of the way they commission and decommission these series.)

Don't really agree with you there Kevin. Both series worked well for me.

B5 WAS scrappy a the end. they didn't say if they were comissioning season 5 so Strazynski had to tie up all the important plotlines in case. It would have been soooooooo much better if they had just told him while season 4 was in production!
Of course it wasn't helped by the actress who played Ivanova walking out!

I think that, by that time, I had got so far into the characters that I just wanted to see what happened to them and didn't really notice the rest.

It will be interesting to see whether Galactica can maintain the momentum over the long haul. The Sci-Fi website suggests that they were changing the thrust this series to highlight the differences between Humans and Cylons. It remains to be seen whether that will work.
