Anston Folk Club 19th October

This is an act of shameless promotion.

Crazy Crow will be presenting - the Irish pub session experience for those who want to join us at Anston Folk Club on thursday 19th October

( Loyal Trooper, South Anston, ( I think that's still Rotherham - I just get in the car and get driven))

Will probably be a strange mixture of session and performance as we don't often wander outside our comfort zone. So good music, some song and I have these ideas about how we can make the experience more convincing ......

Other wise come along and have a sing before hand as Judy runs a wonderful , inclusive club anyway.

Hope to see you there

J

Just drive through South Anston and you'll find it.

Whereabouts in Worksop are you? We're Worksop based too.

Hi Black Diamond

Should be about an 8.30 start may be a little later.

The Anston Flok club is run by Judy Dalton on the third thursday of the month. It is primarily a singers club with occasional guests. Its a very warm and supportive place and I've shaken my way through more songs than I care to remember there.

On Guest nights - usually it is singers and then the guests for half an hour , beer break for ten mins and then singers and then the guests for another half hour to finish off

I'm anticipating a nice supportive, participative audience.

Julie

Hi Julie
uh uh I hate to admit this but I would empty a room if I tried to open my mouth and sing, but fortunately my husband can do for both of us. me, my melodeon is my voice.
hope to see you next time then

Retford is certainly very near to us. Sadly we won't be there on Thursday as Mick is a classical guitarist and has a rehearsal.

Judy runs a great club in very comfortable surroundings. Well worth a visit.

Have you tried Kiveton Park FC? It's an excellent club (and Judy Dalton goes to that too). On a Tuesday night, mainly singers/musicians with the occasional guest.

Julief's already posted the map link, which should give you some idea, but she's asked me to post some more directions, as I've been going there regularly for about ten years.

Either take the A57 South from Sheffield (or West from Worksop), or as I do leave the M1 at the A57 junction, South of the M18, and head towards Worksop.

After about a mile or so you come to the 40mph limit sign at the outskirts of South Anston.
Take the first right turn. This street takes you to the pub. It's only a couple of hundred yards so go steady and look out for the Loyal Trooper on your left.
The narrow car park entrance is immediately before the pub, a sharp turn.

If you're coming from Worksop on the A57, there is a turnoff left for South Anston which brings you to the pub from the other direction.

It's a very big well-lit car park. There's a couple of steps up to the side door. Immediately inside, take the door on your left and you'll see the steep-ish stairs to the club room. It's a big function room (with a bar that's never open). Judy starts the club off at about 8:30. If the room's locked you've got there before her, so go downstairs to the bar and sample the excellent guest beers.

Judy will ask you if you sing(/play). Finish is usually 11:00-11:15. Usually she'll find time for 2 or 3 songs from everyone, but maybe only one this month, as Julief's band will be there to entertain us.

See you there

No, GUEST, you'll be welcome whether you sing or don't.

Most of the regulars sing at this and other clubs. And it's a very open-minded club, so there's a usually wide variety of songs sung, from Child ballads to songs receiving their first (or almost their first) performance.

Hi BDs, It's Rattler, not Sue, but I hope to get to the S.A. club on Thursday too. Sounds like a good night. (you could join in the singing quietly; doesn't have to be loud even though you are a box player! - runs for cover.......)R.

I'm sorry to have to tell everyone that we've had to pull out due to family bereavement.

I spoke to Judy this morning and the club on thursday will probably be one of the usual singers nights. Please come if you can as they are usually great fun with a wide variety of fine singers and we are not adverse to the odd tune ( bring the melodian Black Diamond). I will still be there.

We will hopefully be guesting in January or February

sorry

Julie - Im very sorry to hear that about your bereavement - hope it wasnt a person too close to you, but its always sad when you lose someone you care about.
Im a bit confused though. First you say you have had to pull out, then you say you will be there ??????

Zany Mouse - would you know any contacts for Kiveton Folk Club Im concerned about JK on 31st and wondered if we need to purchase tickets beforehand, as it is only a small room!!

Black Diamond - Retford's closer to Gainsborough than it is to Anston and Kiveton! Why don't you come to Gainsborough FC? There's no bridge toll, it was freed in 1932! :-)

I did come once last year, with a friend, and it was very welcoming, but it was all singin' and I DONT SING!!!!!!!!! believe me, you DO NOT want to hear me sing. I have also danced at Gaisborough FF with my Morris side.

BD - it's only 'all singing' because no-one ever comes who plays anything other than flippin' guitars! I, for one, would be thrilled if a box-player turned up and did a few tunes - even better if he (she?) brought a few mates to play as well! :-)

So are you coming to the Gainsborough FF this coming weekend? There's a 'Mudcat' concert on Sunday.

'Tis no probem - can cope with a bit of thread hijack - It does, however, make you morally obligied to either come to Anston on Thursday or in the New Year when I get the gig re-organised.

Julie - in the New Year sounds good (busy this week!)

BD - you will be very welcome (but please remember it's NOT a session, you'll just get 'turns' like the singers!) :-)
