BS: Breast awareness day

From: skipy

27 10 2006 is "wear it pink day" for breast cancer awareness.
See www.wearitpink.co.uk
I will be in my local on the 27th dressed head to foot in PINK, (any excuse), so give if you can to any other collectors that you may see.
P.S. I am aware of breasts all year!

Thanks, Skipy, for bring this to our attention. I lost a sister to breat cancer, and I am sure there are a number of Mudcat women who have had breast cancer, as well as Mudcat men who have struggled along side partners, mothers or sisters with breast cancer. It is all too common, and a major health issue for women.

Hi Janie, thanks for your support (not a pun)
I wonder how many women are aware of this!
To test his theory, Singer compared women in Fiji, half of whom wear bras, half of whom go without. Singer found the bra-wearers get breast cancer at the same rate US women do. But, the Fijian women who don't wear bras have almost no incidence of breast cancer. Both groups share the same living environment and diet.

Their study (not medically supported) of over 4,700 women gave the following results:

Women who wore their bras 24 hours per day had a 3 out of 4 chance of developing
breast cancer (in their study, n=2056 for the cancer group and n=2674 for
       the standard group).

Women who wore bras more than 12 hour per day but not to bed had a 1 out of 7 risk.

Women who wore their bras less than 12 hours per day had a 1 out of 152 risk.

Women who wore bras rarely or never, had a 1 out of 168 chance of getting breast
cancer. The overall difference between 24 hour wearing and not at all was a
       125-fold difference.

The Medical profession of course claimed it was a faulted study (not approved
by them) but when you have risks falling from 3 in 4 to 1 in 133 you must be
rather stupid to say there is no "bra" effect!

Ed: It looks to me like they need to have less Cancer Fund Raisers (raise money
to give to Cancer Doctors) and get down to some basics! If nothing else, bra
wearers should wear a bra less than 12 hours daily and massage the lymph glands
under each arm, next to their breasts, at least a few times a week. They may
greatly reduce thier risks of breast cancer and at the same time may enjoy better
general health, as the lymph glands are cleared!

Visit Naturale Soulution for properly designed bras!

All jokes aside about me and breasts, google "breast bra cancer"
and read the results, 1000s of death a year could be prevented by not wearing a bra, or at least just taking it off when you are at home, or making a point not to wear one at the weekend.
I am only at a slight risk as I tend to only wear a bra for a couple of hours on a friday night in the pub.

Yeah, but Skipy - you're wearing it on your head!!!

Seriously.. awareness is all too important. My grandmother died of breast cancer, only my mother, being brought up proper, couldn't bring herself to say 'breast'... she told us it was lung cancer and refused to talk about it until I found my grandmother's death certificate in 1998, 17 years after her death.

Consequently, my sister and I, knowing it was more likely in families, if not hereditary, were blissfully unaware that we could have a couple of time bombs in our C cups (well, hers were always more towards the AA end of the scale....but you know what I mean).

I get mine checked fairly regularly from a professional. He SAYS he's a specialist.... he is VERY thorough!

Skipy: I worry about the accuracy of your story, when I find the exact same set of figures quoted for a study of Maoris in New Zealand which was supposedly done by medical researchers... Also, the study doesn't seem to have controlled for any other lifestyle factors which may have confounded the results.

Just found out the study mentioned was actually focussing on breastfeeding handedness and breast cancer risk. The bra wearing was just a side issue - so no wonder it wasn't investigated in a sound manner.

Bagpuss, please have yourself a really good google on the subject, there are many similar studies out there. Most conducted through hospitals & government stats. Perhaps the one I posted was a bad choice, I'll find one that you can trust.

I have had a quick look. The Singer study has never been published in a peer reviewed journal. You really can't take things seriously until they have. Other studies that have touched upon this seem to be uncontrolled studies with no accounting for related factors in the analysis. For example, it is entirely plausible that weight (and by extension diet)is correlated to breast size, and to whether a bra is worn. Obesity and diet are known risk factors in brest cancer. If you do a study proposing a new factor in the aetiology of a disease, you have to feactor out already known causes first. Show me a study that has done this, and I will be more likely to take the hypothesis seriously.

Also, the proposed causitive mechanism seems to be nonsense. It talks about the bra causing restrictions in the lymphatic flow. But the lymph in the breast drains at the back of the breast towards the chest, not at the places which might suffer constriction by a bra.

If you look for information in "published" studies (eg do a search on medline) rather than any old website written by people that don't know that much about science, I think you will find that there is very little evidence that wearing a bra causes breast cancer. here are a selection of abstracts found on medline.

Had a very minor scare myself re breast cancer during the last year...it was terrifying. I was very fortunate that it was just a false alarm. I also have a good friend who has just been given the all clear after treatment, I think most of us know someone who has had this. (Well done to Becca72 for reminding us that men can get it, too.)

If anyone is in the N Lincs area, England, we are doing a charity music night to raise money for the Breast cancer charity on Dec 8th. PM me for details if you are interested, it will be a great night.

Cheers...and good luck with the fundraising, skipy!

Hi Bagpuss,
7. May 1999. A landmark study was published in the prestigious British medical journal, The Lancet. This study showed that pre-menopausal women with fibrocystic breast disease have an almost 6-fold higher risk of
future breast cancer. This study firmly refutes the advice of some doctors who have said that fibrocystic carries no increased risk. In all, there are now over 30 published medical and scientific research
articles showing a connection between fibrocystic and increased breast cancer risk. (Lancet 1999 May 22;353(9166):1742-5 "Risk of breast cancer in women with palpable breast cysts: a prospective study." Edinburgh Breast Group. Dixon JM, McDonald C, Elton RA, Miller WR Edinburgh Breast Unit, Western General Hospital, UK.")

one para from an article on 007b.com

Thanks Rockhen, it won't come to much, but I am working on the principle that it all adds up.

Yes, Skipy, it maybe won't be millions you make :-) ...but it DOES add up...plus I found out about the breast cancer stamps...as will a lot of others, so your post will have made more money that way, plus you may have informed people about stuff they didn't know re breast cancer...

If a few people have had a good giggle on the way, too, providing it is not hurting others, is all the more good reason for you posting this thread! :-)

The link that I offered (if I read it correctly) was from the Lancet, which I think we can all trust.

Indeed they do - a former colleague of mine had to have a tumour removed after he started bleeding from a nipple. Fortunately that seems to have checked the cancer and he's still going strong.
