To test his theory, Singer compared women in Fiji, half of whom wear bras, half of whom go without. Singer found the bra-wearers get breast cancer at the same rate US women do. But, the Fijian women who don't wear bras have almost no incidence of breast cancer. Both groups share the same living environment and diet. Their study (not medically supported) of over 4,700 women gave the following results: Women who wore their bras 24 hours per day had a 3 out of 4 chance of developing breast cancer (in their study, n=2056 for the cancer group and n=2674 for the standard group). Women who wore bras more than 12 hour per day but not to bed had a 1 out of 7 risk. Women who wore their bras less than 12 hours per day had a 1 out of 152 risk. Women who wore bras rarely or never, had a 1 out of 168 chance of getting breast cancer. The overall difference between 24 hour wearing and not at all was a 125-fold difference. The Medical profession of course claimed it was a faulted study (not approved by them) but when you have risks falling from 3 in 4 to 1 in 133 you must be rather stupid to say there is no "bra" effect! Ed: It looks to me like they need to have less Cancer Fund Raisers (raise money to give to Cancer Doctors) and get down to some basics! If nothing else, bra wearers should wear a bra less than 12 hours daily and massage the lymph glands under each arm, next to their breasts, at least a few times a week. They may greatly reduce thier risks of breast cancer and at the same time may enjoy better general health, as the lymph glands are cleared! Visit Naturale Soulution for properly designed bras! All jokes aside about me and breasts, google "breast bra cancer" and read the results, 1000s of death a year could be prevented by not wearing a bra, or at least just taking it off when you are at home, or making a point not to wear one at the weekend. My grandmother died of breast cancer, only my mother, being brought up proper, couldn't bring herself to say 'breast'... she told us it was lung cancer and refused to talk about it until I found my grandmother's death certificate in 1998, 17 years after her death. Consequently, my sister and I, knowing it was more likely in families, if not hereditary, were blissfully unaware that we could have a couple of time bombs in our C cups (well, hers were always more towards the AA end of the scale....but you know what I mean). I get mine checked fairly regularly from a professional. He SAYS he's a specialist.... he is VERY thorough! LTS |

You really can't take things seriously until they have. Other studies that have touched upon this seem to be uncontrolled studies with no accounting for related factors in the analysis. For example, it is entirely plausible that weight (and by extension diet)is correlated to breast size, and to whether a bra is worn. Obesity and diet are known risk factors in brest cancer. If you do a study proposing a new factor in the aetiology of a disease, you have to feactor out already known causes first. Show me a study that has done this, and I will be more likely to take the hypothesis seriously. Also, the proposed causitive mechanism seems to be nonsense. It talks about the bra causing restrictions in the lymphatic flow. But the lymph in the breast drains at the back of the breast towards the chest, not at the places which might suffer constriction by a bra. |

I was very fortunate that it was just a false alarm. I also have a good friend who has just been given the all clear after treatment, I think most of us know someone who has had this. (Well done to Becca72 for reminding us that men can get it, too.)
