There is to be a concert to entertain and honour Ciaran who ran one of RTÉ Radio 1's longest running programmes, "Mo Cheoil Thú" which featured songs, language, history and stories of Ireland. It will be at the "Glor" theatre in Ennis, Co.Clare on Thursday, November 9th at 8 pm.

The Kilfenora and Tulla Céilí Bands, Paddy Moloney (Chieftains), Liam O'Floinn (Planxty), Joe Burke and Anne Conroy, Peadar O'Riada (son of Sean) and Chor Cuil Aodha, Peter Browne will be paying tribute to the much loved retired broadcaster who had access to precious archival material.

Tickets are available from Glór box office 065 6843103 (00353 65 6843103 outside Ireland) .

Good to see that Glór's moved back to doing what it should have been doing in the first place!

Geoff Wallis.

Not sure I agree with you here.

Much as I love trad music, I'm not sure if "Glor" could survive, financially, purely on a diet of trad stuff!

Mo cheol thu was one of my favourite programmes. It was always particularly pleasingto see the way in which he would often focus on the time of year and the rhythms of the seasons for his choice of music. He did a marvellous job of collecting tunes and songs up and down the country during the fifties and up and ensured that much of the tradition was not lost.

Sadly Ciaran came to sound increasingly more frail in the past year or so.

It may be of interest to some to know that there is a programme on RTE Lyric fm on Sat/Sun evenings called Grace Notes which throws up some nice music also. Not strictly traditional but an interesting mix. On repeat via the RTE website for a week as well.

It was often said of "Mo cheol thú" that it was the perfect Sunday morning program: you woke up, turned on the radio.... and gently drifted back to sleep.

I usually caught it when I got in from Mass, Martin. Right after I had fothered the cattle, of course.

Ciaran's "Mo cheol thu" was inspirational and, living and playing in around Oxford in the 70's, was a valued source of music, song and poetry!

Yes, I enjoy "Grace Notes" too but it's rather upset my routine of listening to "Reel to Ragas" which used to be on at the time that "Grace Notes" now is!

Have heard that (unsurpisingly!) tribute concert is now sold out.
