15 Oct 06 - 07:32 PM (#1859768) Subject: Air sea rescue Falmouth voice tour From: Hawker All those who who were at the Voice Tour in Falmouth and watched, prayed and wondered, The incident outside the hotel on Sunday afternoon involved a group of about 20 university students who decided to go for a swim in choppy, cold and unpredictable water. Several of them got into difficulty. All but one managed to get back to shore, and one was plucked from the sea by the Lifeboat - 3 needed treatment by the paramedics for hypotherma, but the singing prayer worked, all survived. Now send all the rest of your healing prayers to Kitty Timmins who sustained a broken wrist and upper arm, and a dislocated shoulder in her show stopping fall on Saturday night. Cold shock can cause arythmia and heart failure when you suddenly fall into cold water. The average person can only hold his or her breath for ten seconds before rapid uncontrolled breathing and gasping causes drowning. An olympic trained swimmer, and some people accustomed to cold water immersion might be able to swim without flotation for up to twenty minutes, but this would be exceptional endurance; most people would be drowned in less than twenty minutes. As nobody seemed to know exactly how many swimmers went in, the helicopter swept the area for about half an hour after the rescues to ensure none had been missed. There appeared to be more than 20 people in the water because people on the shore went in to try and help those already in the water. All's well that ends well and hopefully they will have more sense in future! Cheers, Lucy |
