09 Mar 99 - 05:36 PM (#62122) Subject: You've heard my voice From: Lew In NJ @ Hurdy Gurdy Many years ago, 1964 in the summer I believe, I heard a song which contained the words "You've heard my voice and you know my name". Which I believe was the ending line in either a verse or the chorus of the song. There were opening lines in one of the verses that went:
Slept where the snows and the have lain If you've ever heard a baby cry Then you've heard my voice and you know my name Please help with the words and correct title. |
09 Mar 99 - 11:40 PM (#62172) Subject: RE: You've heard my voice From: Old Folkie It seems to me that the song your refering to was performed and written by a girl from Brooklyn College. It was a real tear jerker - I will look in my 60's notebooks for the words. Keep the faith! |
10 Mar 99 - 12:57 AM (#62187) Subject: RE: You've heard my voice From: ddw in windsor My often faulty memory tells me that this was recorded by Glen Yarborough, but I don't know if it was with the Limeliters or when he was working solo. I just spent about 20 minutes going through the Limeliters' Web site, but couldn't find any mention of the song. I tried to go into Glen Yarborough's site, but the search kept crashing my computer. I hope it's not sending you on a wild goose chase, but I'm fairly certain if you can chase down GY's work, you'll find the song. cheers ddw |

21 Jun 08 - 03:42 PM (#2371555) Subject: Lyr Add: YOU KNOW MY NAME (A Podell/W Schorr) From: Amos ANothe rposting of the same lyrics cites Glenn Yarborough: "No piece of music, however, has ever captivated me in the way that Art Podell and Walter Schorr's song You Know My Name has. The piece was composed in 1962 when Podell was part The New Christy Minstrels. I came to know and love the message as it was performed by Glenn Yarbrough of the Limeliters in the opening cut on his first solo album Time to Move On in 1964. You Know My Name Art Podell & Walter Schorr You've heard my voice. You've heard my voice and you know my name. If you've ever kissed in the summer rain, If you've slept where wind and snows have lain, If you've ever heard a lonely train: Then you've heard my voice, And you know my name. If you've bowed your head when you're filled with pride, If you've learned of death when a bird has died, If you've tasted tears when a child has cried: Then you've heard my voice, And you know my name. You've heard my voice in the winds of spring. Seen my face where the roses cling. I am the touch that the warm rains bring. I make my home in the heart of everything. In the driving rain of a summer squall, When the summer's gone and the petals fall, When the day is done, and the night birds call: Then you've heard my voice And you know my name. " From here. |
20 Dec 09 - 12:49 PM (#2792874) Subject: RE: You've heard my voice From: GUEST,Harvey Thorpe I first - and only - heard "You Know My Name" in about '63 or '64 sung on an album (can't help you with the album name) by a group called The NEW CHRISTY MINSTRELS. They were a group of about 10 to 15 folks. Absolutely great tune and lyrics and I've sung it ever since. Never was able to find the original recording again. Have thought of posting it on You Tube, but don't think I could do justice to the Minstrels. |

21 Dec 09 - 11:56 AM (#2793607) Subject: RE: You've heard my voice From: GUEST,TJ in San Diego Amos: Art Podell is still performing NCM songs in a small band, along with founder, Randy Sparks, and Clarence Treat, among others. I just heard from Randy, who is recovering from recent cancer treatment and doing well. I also have the Limeliters vinyl album on which this song appears. Another treasure in my old record collection is "Art & Paul - Songs of Earth and Sky" from the early 1960's. Art was in Greenwich Village in late '50's, along with Paul Potash, who later wound up in both the Christy Minstrels and The Back Porch Majority (another Sparks entity). They made, I think, two albums as a duo, backed by Dick Rosmini on this one. |

16 Feb 10 - 01:23 PM (#2841046) Subject: RE: You've heard my voice From: GUEST,leeneia I heard this song just once in my life. I was at the bottom of the Grand Canyon, and the singer had a beautiful soprano voice. I shall always treasure the memory of it. When she sang it, it was a bit different than the above. The words ending each verse were: Then you've heard my voice, yes, you've heard my voice. You know my name. Technical question: what causes the apostrophes in the original to turn into O's with a tilda here at the Mudcat? Amos - my belated thanks for posting. |
16 Feb 10 - 01:59 PM (#2841081) Subject: Lyric Add: You've Heard My Voice From: Genie It would be clearer that this thread is about a song if the title were either in title case or if "Lyric Add" were added. Sounds like a good song. |
16 Feb 10 - 02:49 PM (#2841143) Subject: RE: Req: You've heard my voice and you know my name From: Joe Offer Amos copy-pastes from a Mac with weird fonts, and he comes up with words like "youÕve" because his curly quotes change into characters that are almost as strange as he is... -Joe Offer- (er....sorry, Amos. The devil made me do it. But I DID fix all those characters for you, and I clarified the thread title.) |
