Robin Hood songs on albums?

Subject: Robin Hood songs on albums?

HI, I have a student working on Robin Hood ballads (NOT the TV program). Can anyone tell me of reasonably available albums that might have any. The only one I have is one of Art Thieme's (Robin Hood's Death). Are they to be found in the medieval music sections of stores -- there seems to be a dearth of them.

Any help appreciated,

yours,

Peter T.

Have a look at this site - it includes a discography of recordings of the Child ballads. For the Robin Hood ballads, look at numbers 117-154 in particular, although there are some others outside of that range.

Child Ballads Project

Here's a link to one in particular that has a few Robin Hood ballads on it:

Ballads Thrice Twisted

Most of them listed on the above Child ballads site seem to fall under the folk category. It's probably hit or miss whether you can find these in music stores. , but you can probably locate a lot of them online.

If you want to order several miscellaneous ones, (once you locate the specific titles on that site or elsewhere) you could try Elderly Instruments:

Traditional version of School of Scottish Studies album 'The Muckle Sangs'.
Also A L Lloyd sings 'Robin Hood and The Tanner'on the Riverside album of ballads he made with MacColl - rare but somebody should have a set somewhere.
Seem to remember Roy Harris recorded one, can't remember on what.

I noted that there was an old album on Folkways by someone called Wallace House. Anyone know anything about that?

'Gamble Gold' or 'Robin Hood and the Pedlar' is on 'All Around My Hat' by Steeleye Span.

The Wallace House recording is called Robin Hood Ballads - from 1962 on Folkways, cat. #FW6839. It has 15 tracks. Like all Folkways LPs this is available as a custom CD from Smithsonian Folkways. Just contact S-F and they'll burn you a copy. I think they are about $20.

John

Off the top of my head:
Robin and/or Barry Dransfield had one.
The song 'Hal and Tow' starts with 'Robin Hood and Little John ...'

Try the National Sound Archive index http://cadensa.bl.uk/uhtbin/cgisirsi/pkYo5Fj8hn/42730008/60/58 if you can master the advanced search. If you're in London, you can also try the Sound Catalogue at Cecil Sharp House

I once had an album called "From the Wood" by Sherwood Rise out on Dingle (1981). Some Elizabethen tunes and songs as well as folk songs/ballads about Robin Hood ie Robin Hood and Allan a Dale. Presently, not available as a CD but is available on Ebay as a Rare Recording.

Cheerily and merrily.........

There's a CD called "Under The Greenwood Tree" by Estampie on the budget Naxos label that features Robin Hood material.
