Revelation 21 - King James Version ( Public Domain) Lyrics: [Em] Oh, what a beautiful city. [B7] Oh, what a beautiful city [Em] Oh, what a beautiful city [Em] Twelve gates to the city, [B7] - [[Em] Hallelujah Three gates in the east, Three gates in the west, Three gates in the north Three gates in the south [Em] Twelve gates to the city, [B7] - [[Em] Hallelujah Who are those children dressed in red? There's twelve gates to the city, Hallelujah Must be the children that Moses led There's twelve gates to the city, Hallelujah My Jesus done just what He said There's twelve gates to the city, Hallelujah He healed the sick and He raised the dead. There's twelve gates to the city, Hallelujah |

I also quite enjoy a Christmas version adapted and arranged by the New Christy Minstrels. Great stuff! Here's the chorus and one verse (all I can remember off the top of my head). Oh! What a beautiful city Oh! What a beautiful city Oh! Oh! Oh! What a beautiful city Oh! My Lord is born in Bethlehem. Wise men from the East Shepherds in the field Angels sang from the heavens on high The King of Kings is born in Bethlehem! - - - - - |

23 Oct 06 - 09:47 AM (#1866437) Subject: RE: Chord Req: Oh What a Beautiful City From: MissouriMud Both Pete Seeger and Eric Darling did versions of this in major key - same basic chord progression as the minor versions described above but with a major tonic chord. I have no idea where they got their versions. |
23 Oct 06 - 10:37 AM (#1866490) Subject: RE: Chord Req: Oh What a Beautiful City From: Philj200 Dave Van Ronk's version is only nominally in the major scale. He may have played a I chord but he was both singing and playing notes in a blues scale, flatting fourths and sixths in it whenever he wanted. And if I recall, Rev. Davis did that vocally as well. |
23 Oct 06 - 11:49 AM (#1866539) Subject: RE: Chord Req: Oh What a Beautiful City From: Mudlark I do the 3 gates/direction part in major, then shift to minor, do the Em/B7 but throw in an Am as well, and slide the B7. Obviously practically any gospel riff can be used in the "verse"...rich and poor, welcome to the city, etc., to extend this song...it's too much fun to sing to quit on it early. |

28 Oct 06 - 12:02 AM (#1870538) Subject: RE: Chord Req: Oh What a Beautiful City From: Janice in NJ This is from Revelation 21. The chapter is about the new Jerusalem, not the old one that everyone has been fighting over since Biblical times. 21:10. And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, 21:11. Having the glory of God: and her light was like unto a stone most precious, even like a jasper stone, clear as crystal; 21:12. And had a wall great and high, and had twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and names written thereon, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel: 21:13. On the east three gates; on the north three gates; on the south three gates; and on the west three gates. 21:14. And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. Question: Does one of those twelve foundations carry the name of Judas Iscariot? Just asking. |
