Thanks in advance

...no lyrics yet but some interesting stuff...

Fred Gerlach's nephew, (Stephen Nicholas) Nick Gerlach, who learned guitar from his uncle, is better known as Jesse Lee Kincaid, member of The Rising Sons (1964 - 66).

The Rising Sons played J. L. Kincaid compositions: '11th Street Overcrossing', 'The Girl With Green Eyes', 'Sunny's Dream', 'Spanish Lace Blues', 'Flyin' So High', 'I Got A Little'

Fred Gerlach and Dick Rosmini used the 12 string guitar extensively in the early 60s Folk Revival.

Jesse Kincaid was Events Coordinator for Bread & Roses for six years prior to forming Heart To Heart, a non-profit benefit organization founded and incorporated in June, 1991 by performers to alleviate some of the sense of isolation experienced by people confined in institutions by bringing them free, live entertainment. Heart To Heart provides performing artists with an opportunity for volunteer community service. "In our first year of service we produced 60 shows, serving a total audience of 1200 people, with 125 individual performers volunteering their time." ~ Jesse Lee Kincaid

Vixen,

Have just checked these against the Dillards version, so should be what you're looking for.

SHE SANG HYMNS OUT OF TUNE
Jesse Lee Kincaid

She sang hymns out of tune
Carried a yellow balloon
She traded her love for a Spanish doubloon
And talked to the people, the people who are

I have a clock on the wall
It keeps time, and that isn't all
It tells me how long she's been gone
Gone to the people, the people who are

She lived in a sorcerer's room
She pounded the table and brandished the broom
She turned ten thousand when she touched the moon
And turned to the people, the people who are

Rain came and scattered away
The old antique caretaker's children at play
Early this morning, she passed away...
Passed to the people, the people who are

She sang hymns out of tune
Carried a yellow balloon
She traded her love for a Spanish doubloon
And talked to the people, the people who are

She sang hymns out of tune

PDQ and Marion--

Thank you so much! Those are the lyrics, and the additional info is interesting background.

If anyone knows where the chords or tab might be located, that would be helpful. Otherwise, he's going to try and work the accompaniment out from memory. Nothing wrong with that--that's the "folk process!"

Thanks again!

Funny, I was just thinking about this song yesterday. (A long way from my usual English trad.) Bob White used to sing it years ago, he used to play The Ark in Ann Arbor fairly regularly, became a male nurse I think, though he was still doing some performing, but I haven't seen anything at all about him recently.

I always wondered who wrote the song. Thanks for the info and the memories.

Don't forget the Jim Ringer version on Tramps and Hawkers, Philo 1047, 1977.

Harry Nilsson wrote this.
It's a "Spanish doubloon"
There are a few other close-but-not-quites in the lyrics.

This song features on the debut 1967 album by LA band Hearts And Flowers, ("Now Is The Time For............") probably most famous for featuring on their 2nd album Bernie Leadon later of The Eagles("Of Horses, Kids And Forgotten Women")which doesn't contain this song!!!!
Rick Cunha is on both records and both sank without trace at the time. Available, and well worth a listen on a CDtwofer issued some years back - maybe still in catalogue?

I am so happy to find the lyrics to this song here! I have an old recording of it I got from WIOQ years and years ago, but didn't have all of it on tape. I play it on the guitar, but have never performed it because I wasn't sure I had all the lyrics. Thank you so much for posting this!!

I recently found Don Henley's version. Where had I heard it before??? Likely from Harry Nilsson, but maybe the Dillards, too?
I like Don's stripped down version the best. But it is a song for that age, and has Harry written all over it.
And who else? Surely John Hartford would do this song proud. But in Don's version, I really hear Paul Siebel. A voice I do miss!

Here's the Don Henley version, which may or may not play outside the United States:

In a "same thing only different" category, I offer this one:

Grandma Sang Offkey

I was fortunate/sad to see the MRDB in what they said was their last concert.
