FSGW Getaway DOO WOP! 2006

Subject: FSGW Getaway DOO WOP! 2006
From: Amos

I am compiling a wee (about 100 pages) PDF booklet of DooWop lyrics from the 50's and 60's for anyone who thinks it might help them enjoy the Doo Wop workshop this year. It's optional, of course -- some folks just want to play the jukebox in their memories!

Anyway, here are the titles I have included so far.   The big question is whether there are classic Doo Wop songs you feel should be added to it before I offer it to anyone who wants it?

Count me in as well - we did this at another camp earlier in the year - just four of us from about 11.00pm to 2.00am - and it was the highlight of the weekend for me!

Great additions!!

KT, me luv, every choice has certain consequences. If I called you in ALaska from Maryland, I would want to talk for hours, you know. and my cellphone bill would swell up beyond all recognition. And my wife would want to know what sort of a person would make my cell phone bill swell up like that! And I would be at a complete loss for words, which is a condition I cannot abide.

But the vibes of DooWop will pour through the ether and being the sensitive and second-sighted sort of lass you are, I am sure they will fill your space with harmonies that day!

Don't forget "Poison Ivy" and "Love Potion Number Nine" and "Splish Splash" and....

Obviously this is too rich to be digested in one workshop so we will have to keep working at it over several reincarnations. But that's all right, too. Remember:

Rock and Roll is here to stay,
It will never die,
It was meant to be that way,
Although I don't know why....

Skarpi, my best loved buddy:

WHen I used to work in software, this is what we used to call "Requirements Creep"! The collection of DooWop has been subtly re-defined as a collection of rock and roll hits of all kinds. I can't go for that, as I am having to leave too much out as it is just to have a representative cross-section of good DooWop type songs.

But next time we meet, bring that book and we will work through it one end to the other!!

Amos, I love ya, man. I have been following this thread, and a ton of those songs ain't Doo Wop. Itsy Bitsy ....???? It's My Party???? Rubber Ball???? There are others. A lot of that stuff is great stuff, but it ain't Doo Wop.

I am still going to do "So In Love". I am counting on some decent Doo Wop harmony.

I can't wait. This is going to be a fun workshop.

Even though it came long after the golden age of Doo Wop, Billy Joel's "The Longest Time" is very definitely a Doo Wop song.

Now see, if you folks was going to be at NOMAD, you could hear one of the finest a capella doo wop groups on the East Coast: The Sentinels. Honestly. I wish that I could be in two places. My wife and I had planned on coming to the Getaway this year, but we'd already made a commitment to be at NOMAD. The Gospel Messengers will be doing a workshop with the Sentinels titled Church And Street Corner Harmony. I wish we could be with all of you, too.

Maybe another year..

Enjoy the bamma lamma ding dong.

Mick:

The "So In Love" you refer to originally by Patti Page? Like this?

Strange dear, but true dear,
When I"m close to you, dear,
The stars fill the sky,
So in love with you am I.
Even without you,
My arms fold about you,
You know, darling, why,
So in love with you am I.
In love with the night mysterious,
The night when you first were there,
In love with my joy delirious
When I knew that you could care.
So taunt me and hurt me,
Deceive me, desert me.
I'm yours 'til I die,
So in love, so in love,
So in love with you, my love am I.

That the one?

Nope, wrong one.

As we stroll along together
Holding hands, walking all alone
So in love are we two
That we don't know what to do
So in love
In a world of our own
As we stroll by the sea together
Under stars twinkling high above
So in love are we two
No one else but me and you
So in love
So much in love
So in love
So much in love
We stroll along together
I tell you I need you oh so much
I love, love you my darling
Can you tell it in my touch
When we walk down the aisle together
We will vow to be together 'til we die
So much love have we two
Just can't wait to say "I do"
So in love
Are you and I
So in love
Are you and I

It was done a few years back by Boyz to Men, but it was originally done in the early 60's. The band escapes me, but I have known the lyrics forever.

OK. The co-chair of this workshop gets final suggestion on any adds but other than that, the list is closed. I've included almost everything suggested except for those too far from Doo Wop. And the Billy Joel number, sorry. I agree it's right kinda but it was born too late. We're up to 123 pages of prime DooWop and some other R&R classics.

Here's the list of lyrics included in the workbook.

I wish I could make printed versions for everyone, but I cannot. I'll put it up on the web for all to download ay will.

Just a quick advert for all you who would like to sing your favorite Rock/Country/Pop/Folk Scare songs from the post-Doo Wop period, come to Guilty Pleasures, hosted by Big Mick and yours truly on Saturday after lunch!

I've got dibs on White Rabbit, since I'm the leader...

I hope we can do some of these Friday night--just standing around--inside or outside.

Admittedly I have a vested interest since--CURSES--my choral group has picked guess which weekend to have its first concert--and orchestra rehearsal the day before.

Therefore I'll miss probably virtually every workshop--but intend to be there in the evenings-- have to drive back home every night--but it will be real late.

And it sure has been fun in past years just standing around singing--as in the dining hall at Ramblewood on Friday nights, as I recall.

And if people think that would make it doo-wop overload, so be it--I'll wait til next year.

Looks like a great songbook there, Amos! Gonna be hard to fit 'em all into an hour-long workshop, though...

Um, by the way, please keep in mind that a lot of the people coming to the Getaway are not Mudcatters and so will not have access to -- or maybe "know about" would be a better way to put it -- the download. Let's make sure folks don't feel like they're stepping into a private party.

I'm really looking forward to this session, being a doo-wop fan from way back, but I hope it doesn't end up being a bunch of folks reading words off printed sheets...

Sorry, didn't mean to be such a downer...    :<)

Nancy,

I sent the download link to Flawn with a request that he make it known to any FSGWers he might know who would be interested.

Having no connection into the FSGW, other than the Mudcatter link, I am trusting that the word will pass to the FSGW that the resource is available for anyone who wants it.

Is there someone or someplace else I should be including in particular ?

My notion is to let the chips where they may, Nancy, not to have people bound to the pages! They're made available as an aide-memoire to them as wants 'em.

Amos, thank you. I downloaded the song book and was totally appalled--APPALLED, I say--at how many of these songs I remembered in toto when I had the first line to prompt my aging brain cells.

And if that statement doesn't tell everyone exactly how old I am, nothing ever will.
