BS: Children at Abu Ghraib?

Subject: BS: Children at Abu Ghraib?
From: GUEST,BigDaddy

I just caught part of a show on PBS last night (My Country, My Country) that referred to children as young as nine years of age being held at Abu Ghraib. An American soldier assured us that all "juveniles" held there were thoroughly researched and were insurgents or enemy combatants or some such. I googled "Abu Graib" with "children" and "boys" and found a number of articles about children being held there and at other facilities and the abuse they have or are suffering. Apparently writer Seymour Hersh was on top of this at one time. Most of these articles are from 2004. Did I miss this in the news? Is something being done? Why isn't this in the news? Children, for God's sake! There are supposedly videos (circulating in the Pentagon) of these children being sodomized, raped and tortured. Look it up for yourselves. What can we do besides vote on November 7? Give me some hope, somebody. I'm a dad and I'm in tears and sleepless in Michigan over this.

You may have missed this because there's not been much reporting on it. It has been out there though & I hope it gets a lot of play before election time. It'll cause great embrassment to those that still back Bush's play & the controversy over such an embrassing subject might bring the spotlight on this issue which might in turn be helpful to righting this atrocity. It's amazing that with all the recent talk on torture & the new signed bill reguarding this that this subject hasn't come to more light. I'm sure that the Genevna Conventions has a line on this subject.

sorry, that first link didn't work, Bigdaddy. The third is to comment in a chat room - I'm trying to find another source for the Seymour Hersh allegations.

here's one

107 children documented by Red Cross in 2004

This one below has documented all its sources:

Thanks, Freda. After more research I see that this topic has been on Mudcat before. It's new to me, however. I'm kind of going nuts with this...buttonholing strangers, parents of my son's friends, salesclerks at local bookstores, etc., telling them about this. I don't understand why it's not on the front pages, TV news, etc. No matter where you stand politically, this is an outrage. It's hellish. Is the public anesthetised or what?

I know how you feel, Big D. It's so weird - something like this, and it surfaces for a few days and disappears. Once upon a time politicians would have had to quit over something like this - now they get moved sideways, get promoted, or re-elected. The checks and balances to democracy are becoming weaker, ordinary people feel powerless.

Just can't let go of this one. Are the names of those held at Abu Ghraib a secret? Or is there some way (Freedom of Information Act?) to get the names and ages of those held there? One can get just about any information on anyone held in U. S. prisons with little difficulty. Shouldn't the same apply at least to children held by the U. S. military? If the children are no longer at Abu Ghraib, where are they? Just tell us who they are and why they are being held (for starters). Supposedly the International Red Cross confirmed the presence of, and numbers of children being held. What about Amnesty International? Despite their frequent lapses of judgement, one begins to see the need for the ACLU. Too bad there's not an International Civil Liberties Union. As the religious right are fond of saying, "vote your values" on Tuesday, November 7. I sure as hell will.

Maybe now that some changes are taking place, we'll get some answers. Nancy Pelosi has mentioned "hearings" and "subpoenas."

Big Daddy, it's not just at Abu Grahib according to stuff I've been reading for some time. The abuse of children has been occurring for some time in the unsavory networks of power that devolve from the US government and the US military. Children in an occupied country, however, make much easier targets, don't they?

The reason that these things are not known to most people is simple. Most people are only aware of what is given massive general coverage in the main public daily media outlets...TV, radio, and Internet News outlets such as Yahoo, for example. Those outlets are generally owned and funded by the richest and most powerful men in this society. Do you think they are going to alert the public and air the dirty laundry of themselves, and of their friends and employees? Hell, no.

Most people don't go looking for the alternative information that is out there, they just pay cursory attention to the mainstream news, and most of that is spin and propaganda designed to keep them from knowing what is really going on.

If you have a public in which 99% of the people are unaware of what is going on, and a controlled media that intends to keep them that way....is it at all surprising that the vast majority of Americans would not know about these things you are drawing attention to? And is it surprising that most would not believe it even when you told them about it? They are asleep, and they would mostly rather not be woken up to painful realities.

I'm afraid (very afraid) that you're right, GUEST,Gza. I'm probably jousting with windmills, but I'm making a point of telling people about this wherever I go. I'll probably not be asked back to many parties. I also try to convince people to seek out the truth and facts for themselves and pass it on to more people. I'm not optimistic but I persevere anyway. Thanks for your input.

Good for you. That takes courage. You know the old saying?

"power corrupts...absolute power corrupts absolutely"

There you have the problem in a nutshell. Too much power and too much money can do strange things to people. They always want more, and they have to find newer and more extreme ways of enjoying themselves. This has happened in many great empires and power structures in the past, not just in the USA, and the rot works its way down from the top. If you have deeply corrupted leaders and commanders at the top, you soon have a corrupted system...right down to a lot of the little guys at the bottom...like the soldiers who tortured and sexually abused prisoners and murdered prisoners. What we hear about in the media is just the tip of the iceberg.

If we heard about all of it, the government would fall. There'd be a revolution.

These are folk that taught the Greeks, they are heathens who have always expected to "have their way." If the prisoners were denied access to children, the UN would be screaming psychological abuse.

Don't know if it will do any good, but I've e-mailed Michael Moore about this. Think I'll do an e-mail a day to various senators, congressmen, reporters, etc. Maybe if enough seeds are thrown...

After reviewing photos and videos that the Pentagon has refused to release (from Abu Ghraib), here's a quote from Donald Rumsfeld speaking to Congress in 2004: "I mean, I looked at them last night and they're hard to believe." They show acts "that can only be described as blatantly sadistic, cruel and inhumane," he added. He also stated, "If these are released to the public, obviously it's going to make matters worse." Now if Rumsfeld thinks these images are bad...

So far I've only had perfunctory automated generic e-mail responses from Ted Kennedy and Carl Levin thanking me for my concern, and blah, blah, blah. Nothing even acknowledging or mentioning the specific issues I mentioned. Tax dollars at work. Heaven help us.

"There are also Palestinian children held captive in Israeli prisons."

And there are Israeli children lying in their graves, the victims of Palestinian suicide bombers.

bobad - Are the Palestinian children who are being held in Israeli prisons, suicide bombers?

Have they even been tried in a court of law?
