MOTHER MACHREE
Lyric by Rida Johnson Young
Music by Chauncey Olcott and Ernest R. Ball
1910

[Interestingly - Chauncey Olcott was also involved with My Wild Irish Rose and When Irish Eyes are Smiling - quite prolific.]

There's a spot in me heart which no colleen may own.
There's a depth in me soul never sounded or known;
There's a place in my mem'ry, my life, that you fill,
No other can take it, no one ever will.

CHORUS: Sure I love the dear silver that shines in your hair,
And the brow that's all furrowed, and wrinkled with care.
I kiss the dear fingers, so toil-worn for me,
Oh, God! bless you and keep you, Mother Machree!

Ev'ry sorrow or care In the dear days gone by,
Was made bright by the light of the smile in your eye;
Like a candle that's set in the window at night,
Your fond love has cheered me and guided me right. CHORUS

Macushla
Words by Josephine V. Rowe
Music by Dermot MacMorrough
c. 1910, Boosey & Co., New York

Macushla! Macushla!
Your sweet voice is calling,
Calling me softly,
Again and again,
Macushla! Macushla!
I hear it in vain.

Macushla, Macushla,
Your white arms are reaching,
I feel them enfolding,
Caressing me still.
Fling them out from the darkness,
My lost love, Macushla,
Let them find me and bind me
Again, if they will.

Macushla! Macushla!
Your red lips are saying
That death is a dream,
And love is for aye,
Then awaken, Macushla,
Awake from your dreaming,
My blue-eyed Macushla,
Awaken to stay.

just thought you might like to know the Irish language origins, mo chro¡ (my heart), mo chuisle (my pulse; as in 'a chuisle mo chro¡", pulse of my heart - in English we can call someone a "heart throb")

Thank-you for the words of Macushla. When I saw the movie recently I remember my mother playing old gramophone records of Irish Tenor Richard Tauber and John McCormack sing these lovely old song. I wish I could get a cd of them.

I think John McCormick is on a CD...I think Macushla is the same tune as Teddy O'Neil. mg

American artist John Gary's album "A Little Bit of Heaven" is now available on CD, and has both songs (plus "Kathleen Mavourneen"!!) Highly recommend it!

My father attended earlier Sunday Mass and when the rest of the gang arrived home, we would be greeted by John MCormack singing Macushla as loud as the old RCA could pump it out, cracking speakers and all.
