At home ... sung by Cilla Fisher & Artie Trezise on their album 'Reaching Out', I think. Could be from a live radio broadcast, though. I'll try and bring in the words on Monday. - Susanne

Alison, Sending you the words via email. I scanned them in instead of writing them out. Hope you can read my writing. Magnify it lots, you should be ok then.

Hi susan,

I'm sure Musicman would have posted them... but he very kindly handwrote them and scanned them to me because I needed them in a hurry. (Thanks Musicman)

Here is the song, (I changed a few words to make it the way I have heard it sung.)

the tune will follow when I sort it out......

YESTERDAY'S MEN
(Phil Coulter)

'Twas Joey the weasel that gave us the wire
They were closin' our factory down
Tho' we didn't believe him and we called him a liar
The redundancy letters came down
As we read them in silence I choked back a tear
It is hard to believe after twenty-odd years

CHORUS-

Farewell my companions, my friends and my workmates
Farewell to the paydays, the pints, and the crack
Oh we gave them our best years, now they've paid us back,
By making us yesterdays men sure as hell
By making us yesterday's men.

So we said our goodbyes at the factory gate
One cold Friday evening last year
And I saw it all there in the eyes of my mates
The anger the sadness the fear
Like our fathers before us we worked there with pride
Then we fought back the bitterness burning inside.

When Jimmy(?? Ginny) said sure give the kids a few bob,
After all it was Friday night
Ah, how could I tell her I was out of a job?
And now things were going to be tight
How well I remember it cut like a knife
I was never a day on the dole in my life.

The machines now are silent, the workbench is bare
And there's dust on the factory floor
They've boarded the windows and they've chained up the gate,
And they've padlocked the factory door,
And I'm on the scrap heap, and I'm thirty-nine
As one of the hundreds shot down in my prime.

Glad to find this Alison, and to get the name of the author, which I didn't have. I wasn't familiar with the Mudcat Cafe at the time this thread came up. So thanks for letting me know about it. My words (from The Furies) as as you have them with a few slight variations:

Verse 1, Line 4 The redundancy letters came 'round (rather than "down")

Line 6 It was hard to believe... ("was" instead of "is")

Verse 2, last line Then we fought back... ("then" instead of "now")

Verse 3, first two lines "Now Jimmie," said she, "give the kids a few bob, After all, sure it is Friday night."

Verse 4, last line ... cut down in me prime. ("cut" instead of "shot")

The meaning isn't changed but these words scan a bit better, I think. What a powerful song! I'm glad to know that others are familiar with it. What can you tell us about Phil Coulter? What are some other songs he's written?

He's from Derry, he has written a heap of stuff... he has written two eurovision song contest winners with "Puppet on a string" and "Congratulations"...

one of his other famous "folk" songs is "the town I loved so well"....

he has also done many instrumental CDs..... Irish tunes arranged for piano and orchestra..... all very pleasant but played to death in shops if you live in Northern Ireland.. hahaha

hope this helps

Can anyone help with the lyrics of a song called yesterdays men or Joey the weasel, possibly written by Phil Coulter.

I used to sing the Furey's version of Yesterday's Men but I've been walking round all day with the song in my head and realise I've forgotten most of the words. AAAAAGGGHH! Old Age! I'm sure it must be in the forum somewhere but I'm at work and the crappy old (read antediluvian - it's still got Noah's fingerprints on it) computer I'm using can't use the search facility. Can anyone put me out of my misery and post the words? Thanks.

It was Billy the Weasel that gave us the wire.
They're closing the factory down.
Though we didn't believe him and called him a liar
Till the redundancy letters came round.
As we read them in silence, I choked back a tear.
It was hard to believe after twenty-odd years.

CHORUS: Farewell, my companions, my friends and my workmates.
Farewell to the paydays, the pints and the crack;
For we gave them our best years. Now they've paid us back
By making us yesterday's men, sure as hell;
By making us yesterday's men.

So we said our good-byes by the old factory gates
One cold Friday evening last year,
And I saw it all there in the eyes of my mates:
The sadness, the anger, the fear.
Like our fathers before us, we worked there with pride.
Now we fought back the bitterness burning inside.

"Now, Jimmy," said she, "give the kids a few bob.
After all, sure it is Friday night."
But how could I tell her I was out of a job?
From now on, things were going to be tight.
I remember the feeling. It cut like a knife.
I was never a day on the dole in my life.

The machines are all silent. The workbench is bare,
And there's dust on the factory floor.
They've boarded the windows. They've chained up the gate.
They've padlocked the factory door.
And I'm on the scrap heap and I'm thirty-nine,
Just one of the thousands cut down in my prime.

There you are, Cobber. - I haven't sung this one for years!

Sorry to take so long to get back to thank you. The one time I got to the computer, I couldn't get onto the Mudcat. That seems to happen a bit lately - could be because we're not so far from the outback here.
Cheers

YESTERDAYS MEN

'Twas Joey the weasel who gave us the wire
They're closing the factory down
We didn't believe him, we called him a liar
The redundancy letters came round
I read mine in silence and choked back a tear
'Twas hard to believe after twenty-five years

Farewell me companions me friends and me workmates
Farewell to the paydays the pints and the crack
For we gave them our best years
Now they're paying us back
By making us yesterday's men, sure as hell
They're making us yesterday's men

So we said our goodbyes by the factory gates
One cold Friday evening last year
And I saw it all there in the eyes of me mates
The sorrow, the anger, the fear
Like our fathers before us we worked there with pride
Now we fought back the bitterness burning inside

Now Johnny says she, give the kids a few bob
After all sure it is Friday night
Well how could I tell her I was out of a job
From now things were going to be tight
How well I remember, it cut like a knife
I was never a day on the dole in me life

The machines now are silent, the workbenches bare
And there's dust on the factory floor
They've boarded the windows, they've chained up the gates
And they've padlocked the factory door
And I'm on the scrapheap and I'm thirty-nine
Just one of the thousands shot down in me prime

Repeat Chorus

Farewell me companions me friends and me workmates
Farewell to the paydays the pints and the crack
For we gave them our best years
Now they're paying us back
By making us yesterday's men, sure as hell
They're making us yesterday's men
making us yesterday's
making us yesterday's
making us yesterday's men

Just re-visited this thread. GUEST, you've probably found the chords to Yesterday's Men that you were looking for, a long time ago. But in case you haven't:

When we learned the song from the Furey's recording, Reiver 1 came up with these chords:

Key A

       A
'Twas Joey the Weasel that gave us the wire,
          D                   A
They were closing our factory down.

Though we didn't believe him, and we called him a liar,
       D
The redundancy letters came 'round.
            E                        A
As we read them in silence, I choked back a tear,
             D                     E
It was hard to believe after twenty odd years.

CHO:
    A
Farewell, my companions, my friends and my workmates,
    E                        A
Farewell to the paydays, the pints and the craic;

For we gave them our best years, now they've paid us back
    E                     D             A
By makin' us yesterday's men, (sure as Hell),
    E                     A
By makin' us yesterday's men.

I don't know if we sang it in the same key as the Furey's but those chords worked for us. What a powerful song!! And here in the U.S. it's all happening again - thanks to George W.. Hopefully, the Celtic Tiger will do better this time around!

The Fureys and Davy Arthur do the song in G with the occasional Am thrown in in place of the C. At least that is what Eddy told me and it seemed right when I played along with record the next day. But that was 20 odd years ago!

Cheers,
