Origins: He Never Came Back (William Jerome)

One version of the lyrics is at http://www.lyon.edu/wolfcollection/songs/stuartbarnum1281.html, along with a recording from 1963. I learned it from Fiddlin' John Carson's old recording, and was wondering where it came from. I notice the Carter Family called it He Never Came Back.

I went into a restaurant
As hungry as a bear,
And raving like a maniac,
I grabbed the bill of fare.
The waiter says, "What will you have?"
"Bring me a steak," I say.
He took my order, bowed his head,
And slowly went away.
He never came back,
He never came back.
I waited an hour or more.
His jaw I will break if he don't bring that steak
When we meet on that beautiful shore.

Is this to the tune of "In the sweet by and by"?

Probably. At any rate, trad jazz bands play a spiritual called In the Sweet By and By. It has the line When we meet on that beautiful shore.

I think the meter is wrong for 'In the Sweet By and By." The meter for this song is

86 86 Doubled + Chorus ('He never came back...beautiful shore')

ITSBAB meter is (I think)

66 66 + Chorus (In the sweet B&B...beautiful shore)

I've tried to find the origins of this fun song. I have tried several searches. Maybe I call it by the wrong name? This is what I can remember:

The Beautiful Shore

A farmer from the country came to see the town
He registered at Smith's Hotel as Mr. Hayseed Brown
A country boy, we all admit, with whiskers green as grass
Pulled off his boots, jumped into bed, and then blew out the gas

And he never came back, he never came back
And as they broke down the door
The last words he said just before he dropped dead
We will meet on that beautiful shore

I went into a restaurant as hungry as a bear
And like a raving maniac I grabbed the bill of fare
The waiter said, What will you have? Give me a steak, I cried
He took my order, bowed his head, and slowly walked away

And he never came back, he never came back
Though I waited an hour or more
His face I will break, if he don't bring my steak
When we meet on that beautiful shore

I went to see a circus show, I took my mother-in-law
She laughed at everything she saw till she nearly broke her jaw
Outside there was a big balloon which proved to be my friend
I threw her in and cut the rope, and up she did ascend

And she never came back, she never came back
Though we waited for 3 days or more
And there's one thing I know, I will go down below
When we meet on that beautiful shore

Thanks,
BoB

THE HEAVENLY SHORE
(Trad)

I went into a restaurant as hungry as a bear
And like a raving maniac I grabbed the bill of fare
The waiter said, What will you have? Give me a steak, I cried
He took the order, bowed his head, and slowly walked away

And he never came back, he never came back
Though I waited an hour or more
His face I will break, if he don't bring that steak
When we meet on that heavenly shore

A country boy from off the farm came in to see a town
He registered at Smith's Hotel as Mr. Jackson Brown
A country boy, we all admit, with whiskers green as grass
Pulled off his shoes, jumped into bed, and then blew out the gas

And he never came back, he never came back
And as they broke down the door
The last words he said just before he dropped dead
Was, We'll meet on the heavenly shore

I went into a circus show, I took my mother-in-law
She laughed at everything she saw till she nearly broke her jaw
Nearby I saw a big balloon which proved to be my friend
I threw her in, I cut the rope, and up she did ascend

And she never came back, she never came back
Though we waited a twelvemonth or more
And there's one thing I know, I will go down below
If we meet on the heavenly shore

(as sung by Alex Campbell)

Clive Palmer recorded it with The Famous Jug Band in the late sixties/early seventies, after he left The Incredible String Band.

HE NEVER CAME BACK
Words and music by William Jerome.
Chicago: Will Rossiter, 1891.

1. A soldier kissed his wife goodbye. He was going to the war.
The tears they trickled down the face of the one he did adore.
"Be patient until I return, my own sweetheart," he cried.
But at the battle of Bull-Run, he like a soldier died.
He never came back. He never came back.
His dear form she never saw more,
But how happy she'll be, when his sweet face she'll see,
When they meet on that beautiful shore.

2. I went into a restaurant, as hungry as a bear,
And like a raving maniac, I grabbed the bill of fare.
The waiter said, "What will you have?" "Bring me a steak," I say.
He took my order, bowed his head, and slowly walked away.
He never came back. He never came back.
I waited an hour or more,
But his face I will break if he's not got that steak
When we meet on that beautiful shore.

3. I went to see the Barnum's show and took my mother-in-law.
She laughed at ev'rything she saw until it broke her jaw.
Outside the tent, a big balloon it proved to be my friend.
I shoved her in, then cut the rope, and up she did ascend.
She never came back. She never came back,
But high in the air she did soar,
And I'm happy tonight that she's way out of sight
Till we meet on that beautiful shore.

4. A jay that lived "down on the farm" came in to see the town,
And registered at Smith's Hotel as Mister Hayseed Brown.
He took his key and went upstairs, with whiskers green as grass,
Pulled off his boots, jumped into bed, and then blew out the gas.
He never came back. He never came back,
And when they broke open the door,
The last words he said, before he dropped dead,
Were "We'll meet on that beautiful shore."

5. An old maid who was forty five, she madly fell in love
And with a young man just nineteen who called her turtle dove.
The wedding day at last arrived. The birds did gaily sing.
He touched her for a hundred to go out and buy the ring.
He never came back, her sailor boy, Jack,
But left her up on the top floor.
The sassy young thing, he may bring her the ring
When they meet on that beautiful shore.

Many folkies will have heard this song as done by Dave Van Ronk on "Inside Dave Van Ronk". I believe it was recorded at the same time as "Folksinger" in 1963.
