Not sure if I can get there, I'll try.

Would appreciate more of an address, though.

If you head North out of Doncaster over the big new bridge over the Don, go left at the roundabout and it's a few yards to the Three Horseshoes, on the true left bank of the Don.

It is an old folk venue and approachable from the A1M Jct Barnsley/Doncaster. Come in on that road and turn right into Doncaster on the 'Old A1' from memory its near the A19 road (but dont go on it) and just under the bridge on the left parking there abouts

Take care regarding new road now in place

Also not too far from bus and train stations but watch night transport as it aint funny on a bus with a belly full of beer

Right, hopefully I'll find the way. Mind you, if we make it, it will be a short visit - Keith and I are in Portsmouth on Friday night and then we're going to a do on Saturday night.

Wish I had had more notice. At the moment we are supposed to be elsewhere. The Shoes used to be my local.

Best wishes for the event, we can't be there as it's the P.T.Horse Hissyfit and Cara, gig at Hodgsons. If there are any more events planned let us know, it's time I re-visited some of my old Haunts.
Cheers Oombanjo

Directions: The address is The Three Horseshoes, St. Mary's Bridge, Town End, DN5 9AG. There is a large roundabout where the A19 meets the A638 and it's literally just off that, you can see it as you go round. The outer two lanes filter you over the new bridge, but you can always go round again. It's the road leading to the station and the Fishergate Centre.
Programme: The plan is for singarounds, where you will be welcome to sing, play, join in with others or just listen and enjoy. It won't be a concert with performances. That's the two evenings. If there's a call for workshops we'll listen, otherwise just more singing etc. Start about 20.30 Friday, 15.00 and 20.30 Saturday.

Ah! Smoking!
Sorry, I'd love to come, only half-an-hour's drive for me, but I'm not keen on being poisoned by smoke. I'd bet a pound to a pinch of sh*t that you'd get a far better attendance if you made it non-smoking. And it would be good practice for when it's forced on everyone (Hoorah! Bring it on!).

When are organisers going to protect the performers and audience and bar staff against smoking. I am with Strollin' there.

I must admit Mick and I are thinking of trying to make it on the Friday evening (Saturday evening already booked - in fact, double-booked) but I'm not very keen on the smoke. Does it get REALLY bad?

A smoking drinking session? Too damn far, what a shame, I'd love to come but it's too damned far. I'm a non-smoker but there is something about the right atmosphere.....

Maybe possible to make the room being used for the weekend to be a non-smoking venue....watch this space and see what can be done..I too hate smokey venues but love to support events so maybe the landlady will go for a smoke free singing area??

whilst agreeing that a smoke free singing room would be good, the Landlady may not Know what support she will get so maybe if as many people as possible get behind it and give full support she will think that to acceed to a non-smoking room is a very good idea.

I think it's great that Doncaster having a folk weekend after so long of not having one is wonderful so Bobcat KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK
and we will live in the knowledge that all folk will soon be smoke free.

Doncaster is actually having a Folk Festival; 9th - 11th February 2007. Artists already booked include Tom Napper, Tom Bliss, Grace Notes, John Conolly and Ray Hearne. All based at the Ukrainian Club thanks to a grant from Awards For All.

It's good to see so much interest aroused. I hope the festival organisers will get in to see what's going on, and I have already noted their dates in my diary.
I believe the bar is a non-smoking area,(and I'm not impressed by that idea either, since smoke, like the wind, cannot read), and we'll talk to the landlady and see what else can be done. But we are there to promote her pub as a venue for folk music, so we have to work with her.

It needs to be pointed out to her that the majority of Folkies like poisoning THEMSELVES with beer, but object to OTHER DIRTY BUGGERS poisoning them with smoke. She'll get a lot more people in there drinking her beer if they can be sure they'll be able to breathe in there. :-)

I used to smoke until 1991 and in 1996 I was found to have an allergy to cigarette smoke so will not attend smoky venues.....knackered my voice to some extent too....

Smoke affects Mick's asthma and it does my vice in very quickly. I'm really pleased that most folk venues are non-smoking now.

My need to make music overrides my dislike of smoky places, so I'll be there this weekend. I probably won't make it on Friday before about 10.00 p.m.

My need not to be made to feel like shite overrides my need to make music!

I admire your fortitude Doug, but I'm just recovering from one life-threatening illness, I'm not about to expose myself to what is undoubtedly the major cause of another. :-(

I'm sure it'll be a great weekend without me. Hopefully it'll be smoke-free next year and I'll come and inflict my dubious talents upon the gathered multitude! LOL!
