BS: Couldn't-Getaway Tavern 2006

I'm there virtually, but won't get there in the flesh-- my flesh will be at the doc's and then, later, at a hockey game. But if I have a beer at the game, I'll count it as a Getaway toast!

You? Stuck here at the Cat? Drinks are, as usual, on Bert's credit card. The "I couldn't Getaway either" commiserators' line-up at the bar is begun!

I'll take a glass of red. Thanks. I'm feeling sad this morning. A dear friend of mine died yesterday (See Obit Don Drew) and we're all going to miss him terribly. He was a unique treasure of the community.

Thanks for being here. I hope - and feel sure - that they're having a grand time in West River.

Ebbie,

I will try to make connections for you for any taped CD performances this year. Last year's stuff you sent brought me great joy.

Leftydee,

One of your "Death By Accordian" band T-shirts will be proudly worn in your honor and hopefully show up in some pictures or film.

gnu,

I will save aside certain special items for the Mudcat online auction, so that you can have a chance at them.

Everyone Else,

Drinks of something or another in unmarked flasks will be lifted in a toast to all absent friends known and unknown in The Tavern I will personally make. In exchange, please tip the Tavern barmaids well for me.

Miss all of you, whether I already know you or not!

Thanks, Dani. Don was a unique man- and a real treasure of the community. He and I go back a long way and I will miss him sorely. He was just 56 and except for high blood pressure I really don't think he was unhealthy. The autopsy will probably answer some questions.

Funny about the Jack Daniels- I was just thinking that this is a hard liquor kind of night! It is cold here- stunningly beautiful with the snow covered mountains and the clear air- but cold.

I'm going to music about an hour from now but I think I'll leave my Martin at home. I'll use my friend's Washburn; it has a thunky sound but what can you do.

So far I've not had much luck with the snare, but the fish trap has managed a decent large salmon, so I've got it smoking. It is having difficulty though, as it hasn't got any hands and is having trouble holding the Capstan Full Strength and the Zippo lighter at the same time.

Good morning, all.

I've got the coffee on, there's a little whiskey left in the coffee mug: I think I'll leave it there and mix 'em.

Bring your mug around while it's hot....

How about a song? I'll start, with a new tune I'm learning. Have y'all heard of Jolie Holland? I've been wanting to learn "Faded Coat of Blue", and used I-tunes to hear some different versions, and happened upon her. Her album "Escondido" has that, AND a MEAN version of "Mad Tom of Bedlam" (more later) AND a bunch of her own weird, cool stuff.

The song I'm working on has a wonderfully melancholy piano, and terrific lyrics. The refrain is what I sing when I think of them all having such fun at the Getaway without us:

DAMN SHAME
Jolie Holland

I hid out on the front porch
I laid up in my mind
I looked for me a lover
the best one I could find
He got himself a ticket
on an international flight

Oh it's nothing but a goddamn shame
is what it is
oh it's nothing but a goddamn shame

The smell of burnt exhaust
drifts into the bar
it's midnight in California
it's high noon where you are
motorcycles and booze
dirty old perfume

Oh it's nothing but a goddamn shame
is what it is
oh it's nothing but a goddamn shame

I tried to go to sleep
in my haunted little room
the shadows are churning
in the passage of the moon
It'd break my heart to tell you
I couldn't come so soon

Oh it's nothing but a goddamn shame
is what it is
oh it's nothing but a goddamn shame

Tell me one more time
why you went away
It makes a little sense
in the light of day
when evening comes around
all my senses fly away

and it's nothing but a goddamn shame
is what it is
oh it's nothing but a goddamn shame

Speaking of blankets, I dreamt last night that I was going somewhere that would be unheated (not the Getaway, surely?) and took my sleeping bag and three blankets along. At the pickup point/bus stop? there were two homeless old guys and I meant to give them two of my blankets but somehow I found I had given them all three. I woke up trying to figure out how I could get one of them back. (One of the blankets was a soft, eggplant-colored one; another was a fiber-filled quilt and the other was a rough-textured greenish blanket- what we used to call army blankets. If you see any of them abandoned along the road, give me a call. I'm freezin' here.)

To the tune of the old forebitter Paddy West:

Now as I was a-walking round the town,
Feeling cold and glum,
The Mudcat Tavern was close at hand
So I steps in for some virtual rum;
I says to WYSIWYG, "A glass of your best,"
And she turns to me with a smile,
"I'll pour you a glass of virtual Port Royal,
Won't you sit by the fire awhile?"

As I was sipping that rum, me boys,
I heard an awful din,
As all at once the door banged open
And some old Mudcatters blew in;
One was a Giok MacKenzie,
Along with our old pal Rapaire,
There was Ebbie, Dani, and KT,
Even Geoff the Duck was there.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

There were so many of us
and more all the time
Some came by plane, some by bus
Some hitched, not spending a dime
We couldn't be at the Getaway
We couldn't be with the crowd
So we followed the road 'thataway'
and found our friends warm - and loud

Smoked salmon fillets are ready folks. Choice of rye bread, soft white rolls, unleavened flat bread to suit kosher, halal or window cleaners and mustn't forget the toasted beagles.
Yes.... Beagles. There was a fox hunt got mixed up with the line of snares. The fox escaped, thankfully. I am assured by Oscar Wilde that foxhunting is the pursuit of the uneatable by the unspeakable. The uneatable got away but I caught a bunch of the unspeakable and they are roasting nicely. Plenty of fat on them so should crisp up a treat.

Mmmmm.... If you'll make a little room on the grill, I brought some super-yummy ribeye steaks, been sitting all night in the famed bourbon-ginger marinade (that's not BOURBON, damnit, it's Tennessee WHISKEY!). Medium-rare, please, with a pinch of salt and pepper, and the baked potatoes you can just throw on next to them. I've got the butter ready to slab on top of it all. When they're ready I'll bring out the crispy iceberg salad. I made that buttermilk-blue cheese dressing fresh, it's best when it's icy cold!

Might be time to move on to some wine... I like a big fat red with the steaks. What do you recommend with the salmon, Geoff?

You remind me of the day not long after my partner and I had got our new restaurant open. It was Saturday breakfast, and we'd asked one of the employees we'd inherited to fix the chalk specials board out on the street. People kept coming in chuckling, but nobody said anything! Sometime that day we walked outside and saw, "Coffee and Fresh Hot Begels!

We are the Mudcat posters

Boys and girls
Why should we be
Among those churls?
We are the Mudcat posters
Who're not at Getaway.

Iceland, Oz, and England,
Yanks and Canucks too,
Deutschland, Spain and Ghana,
All in the same stew!
We are the Mudcat posters

What do we care for Big Mick,
Kendall, or the rest?
Someone has to stay home
And keep the downy nest.
We are the Mudcat posters

Soon they'll be returning
Full of tales and cheer,
But we will surprise them
'Cause we've drunk up all their beer!

Poor Girl's Blues
(adapted from) Jolie Holland

Maybe I'm a poor girl
But it doesn't bother me at all (2x)
When this world comes crashing down
I know that I'll be standing tall

I used to be an angel
Now I'm just like everybody else (2x)
I left my wings in the gutter
And my halo's lost, dusty on shelf

I know a rambling man
Who's driving me crazy and wild(2x)
I'd have Austin as my footstool and the world as my throne
If only he were by my side

I got a couple of foodstamps
And a caffeine buzz(2x)
So I'd be set for right now,
if I only knew where he was

I'd tell him 'hold tight, honey,
don't you lose your spirit to the wind(2x)
I know you, and you'll be along time rambling
Before you see your rest again

Maybe I'm a poor girl
But I don't let it bother me none(2x)
When this world comes crashing down
I know that I'll be standing in the sun

Geoff-

Thanks for the fireworks portal. Now if we could just set up a minicam as a portal to the Getaway. Actually, I'm not sure why that couldn't be set up; it works for eagle and osprey nests. It would be amusing to identify our various friends as they wandered into view, and speculate on their state of dissipation. Of course it wouldn't take long before millions of other viewers worldwide would join the audience and the whole system would come crashing down!

Nice song, Rapaire!

I always love it on a bagle, but I think I'll go for some on that flat bread this time, just to be venturesome.
Now, about this much coffee,... and about this much of that Jack Daniels in it...is there a dollop of whipped cream available, please?
Ah, yes, thankee...

Then he checks all the nooks and crannies to make sure no amorous gorillas are about. Finally he makes sure there are no horses tied up out back. He thne approaches the bar..........

Here, let me have a half dozen of those sammiches. Can't you see I am wasting away before your very eyes???????? Dani..... any bourbon in this place??? I had two fifths, and a pint when I pulled into that last stop, but Greenhaus and Jessop cleaned me out, and half of LEJ's too. But wasn't the music grand?..........

But the body and main premise was Jeri's. What a stunner she put together. That one is going on the CD. She has such a way with it. She has sent me another one, and I really am taken by it. I am working out the tune, and looking at a verse, but it is another damn fine piece of work. We are so lucky to have her, but she needs NOT TO MISS ANOTHER DAMN GETAWAY.

Subject: RE: BS: Couldn't-Getaway Tavern 2006
From: Big Mick

I will, Charley. But a correction is in order. The song is by Jeri, myself, and Rick. We all contributed mightily to it. Jeri wrote the original lyrics. She gave it to Rick and I some 4 or 5 years ago. Rick felt like it needed a chorus, and suggested some lyrics changes. He ran out of time before completing his version of it. I was troubled by one area, and felt like it didn't need a chorus so much as it needed bridges to separate the dialogue, and interpret what was going on in the minds of the players. So I wrote those and modified certain lyrics. Jeri actually inspired the tune, but I came up with that. She made a comment about how it would fit to Mary Ellen Carter, in a joking way. I took those chords, and started tinkering. All of a sudden the tune just jumped off the page at me. Then I arranged it.

It is a true collaborative effort, all built around Jeri's superb wordcraft. Jeri and I agree that it will be copyrighted as being by Corlew, Lane, and Fielding.

Soon as I finish with that, I will record it and post snippets on a Myspace or some other MP3 site.

It is a beauty.

If we want to hear what went on there, we'll look in the other threads.. OK?

And which one of you buggers has given me this cough? I sound like a bloody fur seal... Didn't have it till you lot came in....

Now mix me up a Jamaican Tixylix Mac please... 3 parts Tixylix cough medicine to 3 parts ginger wine and 6 parts of Jamaica's finest.

If I'm going out, I'm going out in style.

You are correct and I apologize for initiating conversation about the G*****y. Here's a drinking song from our friends in Nova Scotia to wallow away in for the rest of the evening (copy and paste into WORD/TIMES/12 to line up chords):

Words by Alistair Macdonald ©?
After the singing of Vince Morash, Nova Scotia, 1995
Tune: "Three Drunkard Maidens"

The Jocose Drunkard

G---------D-G---C----G-----D-------G--D7-G
There is that jo-cose drunk-ard as you may com-pre-hend,
-----------D----G—C---G------D----G----D7-G
He's full of jokes and laugh-ter, and every-one's his friend;
---C---G---D-G—C---G-D---G—C-G—D-G-D
He slaps you on the back, me lads, and or-ders up a round,
----G---D-G---C----G-----D------G-D7-G
That jolly jo-cose drunk-ard's a pleasure to be found.

Chorus:

----C---G---C---G
And you raise your glass,
------C----G
Times have passed,
-------C—G-------C---G
And all the lads have gone home.

One drink beyond the jocose and then it's time for tears,
For now the drunkard is morose, he's crying in his beer;
He gets so sentimental, nostalgic and depressed,
He grieves for all he might've been and wails about the rest. (CHO)

But when the crying ceases, let the innocent beware,
For now the drunkard's bellicose, with fighting spirit rare;
He loudly picks an argument and wildly swings his fist,
So bellicose a drunkard's a pleasure to be missed. (CHO)

The drunkard then becomes subdued, the liquor takes its toll,
For now the drunkard's comatose, 'tis said he's passed out cold;
These are the states of drunkenness through which we all may sink,
But, before we all are comatose – there's time for one last drink!

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Charley - are you trying to say I'm a sot?

And a fat sot at that??!

Guilty as charged.

No, perhaps a lush!

But how would I know?

Anyone for a mug of mocha java?

"There is that jo-cose drunk-ard as you may com-pre-hend,"

That seems to work pretty well to the tune of "Come all You Texas Rangers", too.

Frogprince-

There is no end to alternative tunes for this "temperance" ditty but the composer Alistair Macdonald choose "Three Drunkard Maidens" as its tune and it seems to work quite well. It's also a traditional tune that's fairly well known on both sides of the great pond. Give it a fair chance.

I do think it could use a better chorus, something more to sink one's teeth into.

Maybe I'll make my next round Poland Spring on the rocks.

Cheerily,
