However, in the seventies, she was one of the most stunningly original purveyors of the personal song. Her melodies were unusual and her lyrics full of rare insights. Her first five or six albums were rarely off my turntables. Without doubt she had genuine integrity. Her jazz music went over my head. I suspect that was my fault rather than hers. I wish her Happy Birthday along with everyone else though. I think her songs "The Circle Game", "Cactus Tree" and "Both Sides Now" are going to be around for a long time. |

I would guess that if Joni Mitchell had been born in say 1980 but had had the same compulsion to write paint and do all the stuff she's done (which she might or might not have done but that's a different thread), then she would have still have had something to say but it's unlikely that it would have been in the same style. I have a sneaking suspicion though she would probably still have been an excellent artist. Might not have had bare feet or played a dulcimer - or slapped a guitar because the action was so bad and it was the only thing she could play in Matala - but I think she would still have done some good stuff. She might have been a rap artist who knows? |

Unlike many albums I've bought since on the strength of hearing a single track, I was definitely not disappointed! But IMO she has done a lot of good stuff since then, but like many artists, there's some not-so-good among it all. Almost inevitable with someone who's been around that long and made so many records. |
