29 Nov 00 - 08:37 AM (#348177) Subject: RE: Danny Duggin's Jubilee From: MartinRyan Luke learned it from Barry Gleeson, another Dublin singer. He learned it from a recording by Jimmy O'Dea. O'Dea was a famous Irish stage comedian - last vestige of vaudeville, really. Many comic songs were written for him by scriptwriters Seamas Kavanagh and Harry O'DOnovan. Barry reckons O'DOnovan wrote this one. Regards p.s. Kavanagh wrote "Biddy Mulligan, the Pride of the Coombe." |
04 Jul 02 - 07:09 PM (#742520) Subject: RE: Danny Duggin's Jubilee From: MartinRyan "Biddy Mulligan" was based on a song called "The Queen of the Coombe" which Kavanagh found in an old (19C.) Theatre Royal programmme. Just tidying up! Regards |

[*It certainly sounds like they're singing "Gilligan's."] Rego Irish Records also has an album "Through the Eyes of an Irishman," by Tony Kenny which contains DANNY DOOGAN'S JUBILEE in a medley. It's also on an album called "Irish Pub Songs" by Steve O'Shea. Based on the lyrics above, it seems to have a lot in common with several songs in the thread Lyr Add: Irish songs about balls, wakes, soirees. |

In the town of Tipperary, there's a man of great vitality, Respected by the neighbours for his pleasant cordiality. A hooley or a party, a wedding or a funeral, Would never be complete if Danny Doogan wasn't there. He had a spree for everything; 'twas very aggravatin', And he couldn't find a good excuse for further celebrating. "If there's nothing else," says he, "to start the drinking and the eatin', Although I don't know what it is, I'll have a Jubilee." CHORUS: He's a devil and all the rest of it; he'll always make the best of it. A decent Irish gentleman, his humour is the test of it. We toasted him and drank his health on everything but tea, The night we celebrated Danny Doogan's Jubilee. 2. So he wrote the invitations to the best of his ability, And everyone accepted and replied with great civility, And all the neighbours wondered if they ought to come in evening dress For "collar and tie is optional" was printed on the card. The girls dressed in silky things, and as the fashion rests with them, Their mothers came in flowery things. the birds could build their nests in them. The fellas came in starchy shirts. you should of seen the chest of them, Wearing wedding hats that had been polished up with lard. CHORUS 3. So Danny met the guests and everyone congratulated him, And devil a thing could shake his grin though everybody bated him. We asked him, was his Jubilee a silver, brass or golden one? But Danny is the lad that isn't easy to annoy. When dancing had begun, the shirts and collars started choking them. Their necks were twisted round so much you'd think they might have broken them. Dooley got so mad when Maggie Murphy started joking him, He tore his shirt asunder like the famous Minstrel Boy. CHORUS 4. So the ladies all were exercised by violent curiosity, And Danny's quiet grin aroused a female animosity, But when the lads had finally removed their starchy finery, A Christening or a Jubilee they didn't care a hair. Well, you might as well have tried to wrest a secret from a fairy, Though the mystery is often make the womenfolk contrary Unanimously voted by the lads of Tipperary, The Doogan's Jubilee should be an annual affair. CHORUS |
