Young folkies wanted sex drugs and folk

Subject: Young folkies wanted sex drugs and folk
From: GUEST,Stacey McMullen

Hello all, I am a Irish tenor banjo player, guitar, mandolin, whistles, vocals player from, Nottingham/ long Eaton. I am 17 going on 18 years old and feel its about time to start making lovely music with others. I am looking for other youngish folkies who love nothing more than to play rhythmic pounding folk tunes, soft melodies, harmonious and pounding songs. to start a band I love folk music. From traditional to modern. I am
inspired by Luke Kelly and the Dubliners, Christy more, the pogues the Clancy brothers the chieftains, altan , solas , Dougie Maclean and many many many more. I am very open-minded and love to hear new amazing stuff.

Being modest (not bigheaded hopefully he he) I say I can hold fast tunes (with some improvisation of my own) on the old banjo mandolin and whistles as well as improvising nice counter melodies to go along with others singing. I also sing quite a few songs with decent quality (trying not to sound cocky). I would just love to start a band with other young folkies who share my passion for folk music (not that there's nothing wrong with oldies, most of my folk musician friends are mature adults, infact I think some of them use this site (so no offence to them) and i love them all for brining such amazing music to me in the past years and introducing me to the folk club circuit I would have just been playing in pubs in Ireland with my family and at home if it wasn't for you. So thank you (most of all to mikk skinner))

I am quite open minded to all instruments, would love a fiddler to share kick as tunes with and another person to back up tunes and songs with (I have no problem with the band having 5 solo singers if it wishes.. infact multi instrumentalers would be the best because equality in the band would be brilliant e.g. I sing a song then I back someone else up on a tune or a song then someone backs me up on a tune. and the circle just keeps going round)

i would love for us all to show our talents off.
Very willing and open minded to song writers as I have written some as well, so would love to collaborate on my own and other peoples songs.

You will often find me at the Mansfield folk club at the brown cow,
the Vernon arms folk club in spondon
and various other open mikes, sessions and clubs around Nottinghamshire/derbyshire long Eaton and beeston on a weekly basis.

so if your up for it my number is 01158545494 or theysayjumpwesayhowhigh@hotmail.com

or perhaps catch me at a folk club or contact me, I await any replies with the uttermost enthusiasm

just ask for

Stacey McMullen
(by the way I am a boy not a girl if the name confuses)

I have deleted the telephone number and email. This appears to be a windup, but if you want the email back in here, I would suggest an email to Joe@mudcat.org. Mudelf

I'd get your number and e.mail off this thread ASAP.

Team? where are you?

We might be a nice bunch, but this is an international public forum and you are putting yourself atgreat risk by letting everyone know where you live, where you hang out, your number, e.mail, and the fact that you are a naive young 17 year old girl.

hmmmmmmmmm

This is a wind up .....

If not then joe or max or someone do something before this girls life is made living hell

All you need is one asshole out of the millions whocould read this post.

How do you know I'm not one (all "witty" responses aside)

honestly, does anyone else think I'm overreacting?

If so I'll retract it all, but you wouldn't catch me putting that much personal info into a public forum.

First, take a deep breath. Lox is trying to be helpful and despite being British, he's a pretty good guy.

I can't help you Stacey but I'd like to say good luck & to encourage you to continue. We've had youngen's around here that have done well for themselves, Sam Pirt before he was bigger time comes to mind, very nice guy met him here in New Hampshire (USA) quite awile ago along withh is guitar playing bud, very nice young fellows & great musicians. So stick around & keep playing around the more you're out & about like this the better you make good odds at eventually hooking up with others. Don't forget your schooling, espically if you're planning a music school, it's a hub for meeting others like yourself. Travel farther & farther out hit the Welsh & English & Scottish circuts when possible. You'll find a greeting by mudcatters now matter where you land up & most are always good for pushing ahead new, young blood as long as you're decent folk & respectful.
You get this way & we'll give you support here in the Northeast part of the US too.
Good Luck
Barry

Chill guest.

If you feel fine about it that's your choice.

The wind up could have been someone posting the details of someone they don't like onto the net to get them unwarranted attention from people they don't know.

It happens. Some people can be cruel.

Your reaction suggests that my concerns about your safety are bugging you a little though, so maybe I'm not being that paranoid.

It's not my intention to panic you, but there are some pretty fundamental rules about safety when you are on the net in a public forum.

You don't have to follow them if you don't want to, it's a free forum, but I think it makes sense to exercise a little caution.

I think you have given away toomuch personal info to people you don't know, and I don't just mean the ones posting and chatting, but the passers by and mischief makers.

You're making yourself vulnerable in a way that I wouldn't be comfortable to. That's it.

Stacey, one more thing. I'm glad ouput you name out here but lox was just trying to be helpful. There is a way to send out private info by using a PM (personnal message), see the drop down menue above that says quick links, you'll need to become a member but there's no fear in that. Lastly, if it's a guest posting with no name attached, some of us hear don't take them all to seriously even though some maybe, so don't sweat the posts from "Guests" until they'd like to put there name or some name even any name up there.
Again Best of luck

It seems a banjo picker died and went to the pearly gates and Saint Peter said, "A banjo picker, eh?... and bluegrass at that. With a background like that, you'll have to take a special test for admission. The test is to tell me what is God's first name?"

The banjo picker said, "Oh that's easy. God's first name is Andy. We sing it at Sunday school every week:

Andy walks with me
Andy talks with me
Andy tells me I am his own..."

Banjo jokes are generally aimed at five-stringers. The Irish tenor banjo is a different instrument entirely.

In the Irish context the "banjo jokes" traditionally get transferred to the bodhran player.

Now you've signed up, may I suggest you PM Louisey? She is a great singer, plays keyboard and whistle and has been looking for a band to play with. She lives in South Derbyshire and is early 20s.

I've also suggested my son RAT-W read this thread too. He sings and plays oboe (Cool folk instrument....just go and see Isambarde!). He's nearly 16. Transport may be a prob for him, but if Louise joins you, she only lives a couple of miles from us.

Glad to see you've joined, and didn't let yourself be chased off. The thing is, as Big Mick said, there've been a few jokers around who've made people suspicious at times. And also some people freaked at the idea of sticking contact details up front in an open post, because that's asking for trouble. We're generally pretty friendly here, when we're not fighting.

As for finding people to play with, you'll do that if you find where there are some sessions going within reach of where you live and join in. It might be clubs, it might be pubs, it might be festivals. More than likely it'll be all three. You'll be welcomed I can swear to that.(And another place is Hobgoblin in Nottingham. Music shops generally have cards stuck-up from people trying to set up bands and suchlike.

In the course of all that you'll find people you can get along with and can get together to work up a band, and good luck to you. Keep us posted how its going..

Yes Welcome Stace.

I wasn't trying to freak anyone out, the thought that it might be a wind up came second to the more important issue of self preservation. so I was really on your side from the start. =)

No apologies needed to me at any point, it's reassuring to me to know that you see the need to take care. I obviously don't know you, but I do feel that everyone deserves a certain basic level of respect, and to me that means, for example, shouting "look out" if someone steps out in front of a car rather than letting them get knocked down.

That's all it was.

I agree that the wind up note isn't necessary and might put people off this thread that could otherwise be interested in forming a band with you. I wish you luck in that respect.

As for the fights here, they're more like the fights in the gaulish village in the Asterix comics. A load of jumped up opinionated bashing thheir keyboards because their fingerrs aren't subtle enough to scrape a tune from their instrument of choice.

Although having said that, from the cloudy mire that constitutes our collective conscious ... well semi conscious at least ... though not after a drink ... there has been known to emerge from time to time a thought or two of some ... dare I say it ... interest, or even profundity.

What the hell, I have witnessed some downright moving thought provoking stuff here and had my ribs tickled by some wonderful turns of phrase and observations.

All I would add to that, in conclusion, is to watch out - you are still young ... some of us have begun to fuse with our computers and become oblivious to time.

You can log on to the mudcat on tuesday, submit a couple of posts and wait for a cuple of responses only to realise that it's suddenly become friday.

I have begun to suspect that the Borg, having been thwarted on the battle field by Jean Luc Picard, has decided to wage a more subliminal war by slowly sucking us into it through cyberspace.

That's it from me.

Welcome aboard Stacey. Good and well-intended advice above. My advice is to not be so focused on your own age, or that of potential bandmates. The ages of players in my band currently spans 47 years. Each of us has a contribution to make, and the whole is all the better for it. I suspect most of us would admit that we presume it's easier to get along with our own age cohorts, but I find that age is not a very significant discrimant. Plus, no matter where an individual may fall on the age spectrum, he or she misses out on a lot by shunning association with people of other ages. It's just another form of unintelligent discrimination. The key is to enjoy the music, and the people you make it with.

I agree to a certain extent Paddymac, but I would also consider the possibility that Stace may have aspirations beyond playing in a marginal context, which is the frame of reference withn which most folkies exist.

A young dynamic band realistically does have more chance of appealing to a wider audience than one comprised of various "generational influences" as it were.

I had dreams of stardom when I was younger, and though I would not go so far as to assert that Stace definitely does, I would certainly not discourage him from pursuing those dreams should he feel like it, or (more pertinently) from being as discriminating as he sees fit in his attempt to make them real.

He will hopefully have many years to enjoy performng in the way that most of us now probably do. I get up and I don't care what people think or whether there is any mileage or not nowadays, as long as I enjoy it.

As a younger man though, I don't see any harm in taking or indeed trying to create opportunities that young men have that we don't any more.

The charts is all about youthful vigour and sex appeal, and judging by the title of this thread, stace isn't looking to organize a song circle.

He shouldn't be ashamed of that. It doesn't undermine his integrity one bit. Belt it out boy and have fun and in ten years you can set up a song circle with your long term girlfriend.

I don't see one as exclusive of the other. I love the fact that he is looking for a group of folks his age to put their own spin on the music. Paddymac's point is well taken, though. Play with folks no matter their age. Remember that sometimes age also indicates experience and us graybeards can save you a lot of flopping around, maybe show you a few shortcuts. But ultimately the lessons of the mid 60's to mid 70's are germane. This is when a bunch of young folks like Donal Lunny, Christy Moore, and the rest kind of got together and forever enhanced Irish music. Respect the old, create the new is good sauce.

In the folk world what tends to happens is surely that young players play with the oldies, and, in the process, meet up with the people of their own generation who are into the music and who are on the same wavelength as they are. And then they set off on their own journey, maybe with the odd oldie onboard for ballast and experience.

That's one of the things that makes it different from some other types of music.

And yes i do have more ambitions for folk music than the standard club layout.I just want to start a band really, which does little spots at folk clubs and then hopefully develop and do festivals etc.......

ne help is very much welcomed

(and the sex bit is purely a joke i dont intend to be wearing sun glasses and trendy clothes whilst playing "the masons apron")

Wonderful sentiment, Stacey!! Go find young folks your own age and put your spin on the music. I always laugh at the purists who act like it is heresy to play the music as you hear it in your own mind. They show that they are about the form and not the substance. Fact is that the one thing that is traditional in Irish/Scottish music is that it will change age by age, and sometime artist by artist. I have pointed out before that the same piper might play the same tune differently in two playings. The tunes that were played by pipers in 1950 were definitely different than when the music went ensemble in the 60's. Just find folks and let your young ears and minds run with the music. It will be exciting for you, and exciting for us.

And check in with us from time to time. We promise not to grumble too much.

All the best,

Mick

Clarification!

There was a beer fest with some msuic (supposed to be folk but wasn't really) in a pub just off Slab Square earlier this year and I travelled up for it and a couple of other reasons too, and it may run again next year and if it does, see you there!

I play Step it out Mary in C sharp minor (err-r- rather too many flats!)

Hi Stacey, welcome to Mudcat! I met you last Tuesday at the Brown Cow (you played a couple of tunes on my mandolin!). To those who think this is a wind-up; this is a very promising young talent. The self-penned song was especially impressive; not the usual stuff where a moody teenager sings the content of their diary, but a proper song, with structure, melody, a story and a memorable hook line that I was still humming on the drive home. I'd agree with Lynne's idea about contacting Louisey; can't hurt, and might be a really interesting combination. Don't be put off by the initial comments; most people on here are great, and will help you to learn about how to get your music 'out there'.
Tim (as a guest, 'cos the interweb thingy won't let me sign in just now.)
