Origin: Everybody Ought to Know (Who Jesus Is)

Help! Who knows the origin of the song "Everybody ought to know ... who
Jesus is" with chorus "He´s the Lily of the Valley..."? It was popular
in the fifties. The first bars are the same as Harry Dixon Loes´
"Every Moment of the Day" and the chorus is = "What a Friend we have in
Jesus". There is a song "Everybody don´t know..." with the same
chorus but slightly different melody. It was recorded by Rev. F.W McGee
1930 and later by several New Orleans Jazz Bands. But the origin of
"Everybody ought to know"???

Thanks for your help

Ah, his "click" wasn't blue before, it is now.
That wasn't how we sang it.

...but thanks anyway, Joe, for locating an obscure song in a short time, and finding an interesting site in the process!

Thank you all for contributions!

I always thought that the tune "Lily of the Valley" with the verse "Everybody DON´T know --- who Jesus is" originated from "Everybody OUGHT TO know...", but probaly it´s just the other way round:

"Everybody DON´T know" was recorded by Rev F.W.McGee in 1930 - only one verse, no chorus (trumpet player possibly Henry "Red" Allen???) and 21 years later by Paul Barbarin´s band. The verse melody is almost the same as "Oh Happy Day" (which has also been used for the parody "How Dry I Am!), but the chorus "He´s the Lily of the Valley..." is of unknown origin.

"Everybody OUGHT TO know" was popular in the fifties. I remember it from the Salvation Army in Sweden about 1956, and I guess it came to Sweden with the Maranata movement. The first two bars of the verse are exactly like "Every Moment of the Day" by Harry Dixon Loes, who also wrote "Everybody ought to Love Jesus". The chorus was sung to "What a Friend we have in Jesus". Exactly how and when it first appeared is not known. Maybe it was just improvized as a "chorus" during the meetings - such songs were not always written down.

There are also several other "Lily of the Valley", the most common one by Fry / Hays, 1881 (with partly the same lyrics).

The question remains: What is the origin of the chorus of "Everybody DON´T know??

CCLI serves as a clearinghouse for copyright payments for churches who want to do the right thing by Christian songwriters.

They even have a Swedish language website:

I remember a "chorus" that used to be sung in the 50's & 60's with lyrics:
Everybody ought to know, everybody ought to know,
Everybody ought to know who Jesus is.
Everybody ought to know, everybody ought to know,
Everybody ought to know who Jesus is.
He's the Lily of the Valley, He's the Bright and Morning Star,
He's the Fairest of ten thousand.
Everybody ought to know.
