Sadly another giant has gone to the great palace in the sky. Jack Williamson, one of the greatest science fiction writers has passed away on November 10th age 98. His career extended from 1928 to last year and his last published work was "The Stonehenge Gate" (2005).
Jack, say "hello" to all the others who made my life so enjoyable with their writings. My thoughts are with you all.

wow...98! I read his stuff as a young kid, and was still reading him 10 years ago. I must have 10-12 of his novels down in the catacombs.

I think he'll be my new role model about how to keep on keeping on.

I believe he was in his fifties or even sixties when he decided he wanted to enter academia. He applied for a PhD program at that age, and had a hard time getting the powers that be to accept him. First, he was (of all things!) a science fiction writer! And he was way too old to enter an academic career!

Somehow he got permission, got his PhD, and entered advanced teaching. Whether he actually got to professor rank, I don't know.

The list is not as comprehensive as it appears. He appeared with some regularity in Analog. I always enjoyed his stuff.
