And a Happy birthday to the late Mr. Copeland.

My hat is off to him in great thanks and respect for "Our Town" and "Rodeo".

Nice to note his b-day, but I much prefer the works of Roy Harris (no, not Mudcat's "Burl":-) who also used a lot of folk music in his symphonies.

In Jewish music there is a term "Mi'Sinai", (from Mt Sinai) This denotes music that, despite whenever it actually was written, seems to be very intrinsic and fundamental--as if it had been given directly at Mt Sinai from a higher source than mere human beings.

Copeland's "Fanfare for the Common Man" is for me one of the pieces bearing that characteristic. --Linda Goodman

Don't know much Harris yet. Where's a good place to continue after his 3rd. , Kat?
Copland (not Copeland)'s Appalachian Spring is fine, his Clarinet Concerto lovely, his Piano ditto gritty;he won an Oscar for the score to The Heiress (1949) - don't know it.

I'll ask my brother for some suggestions, autolycus. He was fortunate enough to have had private study with Harris while at university. Thanks for asking.:-)

I love his American Ballads piano pieces. His wife, Johana, performed all of his piano works. I see a CD at AMAZON which has several of the American Ballads songs on it as played by her.

Copland (not Copeland) ... my mistake, my apologies and thanks for pointing that out autolycus.

Copland's settings of Old American Songs (two sets of five songs each -- some folk songs, minstrel songs, hymn tunes. . .) are a must listen. Try the premier recording by William Warfield and Copland at the piano (early '50s), or the version Copland orchestrated sung by Thomas Hampson about ten years ago.
