Nov. Shanty Session (NH)

Late posting due to Mudcat downage and a very busy week.

The monthly shanty / forebitter session will be taking place at the Press Room in Portsmouth, NH this Saturday from 3:30 to 7:30 PM. As this will be Stan Hugill's 100th, we should gather en masse for a special celebration. I know that Rol and Go is otherwise occupied, but how about the rest of you?

If you can't get to Liverpool, Portsmouth is a good alternative -- Tom

Judy and I will be there about 4 pm. Nor and Eli should be there for an hour or two, and our new apprentice Carol will be there as well so please be gentle!

Where was Roll & Go supposed to be? Is there a gig someone hasn't told us about?

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Just got an e-mail from Al and Barbara (South Street Seaport) )saying that they're planning to attend the shanty sing. Maybe they can give us an update of the MIT shanty raid on their chantey cing last weekend.

Weather looks better for Saturday than what's blowing around today.

Well, we were going to be there but Mary insisted on dragging me out all morning round the craft fairs and we ended up so pooped that all we wanted to do was go home and collapse!

Well, you missed it. We were missing the Mad Ladies from Maine, but also a big chunk of the Gloucester roster. No Barry, 'cuz he was off with his Mass buddies and doesn't love us any more. (Some guy named John Roberts doing a concert, I understand.) The shanty session however, was wonderful.

Barry's wife was on a stage of her own (in Derry, doing Sweet Adalines) & I was cheering her on. I was not off with my "Mass buddies", I don't even do Mass & won't be found in churches except for musicial reasons & I do still love you all.

Oops - sorry, Barry. I'd heard Justine was performing, but got John and the Gloucester crew stuck in my head. Kinda noisy in there... (Would have been worse if it had been a whole churchload of folks!)

Al and Barbara did some wonderful songs, and Barbara said she'd assumed everybody knew them. Well, no, but that just goes to show that songs are still just a bit local, and folk music's still community based, no matter what's in the books, on the radio or in the music shops.

I thought it was a really good session, despite the swarm of footbal fans at the bar. They came, they yelled a lot, and then they went home. Not so bad, though. Just more like a Friday night than a Saturday afternoon.

Judy an I arrived an hour late for the session but it's always fun to swing through the doors of the Press Room to the sound of robust singing. Who was that pack of teenagers holding forth at the bar?

I understand that all of Barry's songs were covered before I got there, so I didn't have to attempt to fill his big sea-boots. The residual Gloucester gang did themselves proud with "Run Come See Jerusalem" and other sea songs, and the tall fella who led "Garnet's Home-Made Brew" was a great addition. Al and Barbara from South Street/greater NYC were there, Al leading more of Harry Robertson's whaling songs. Nor and Eli were there from Roll & Go, along with our new apprentice Carol (I'll be curious to hear what she thought of the session); Nor led "I Wish I was Back in Liverpool (Liverpool Lullaby)" which everyone seemed to be able to join in on. Later Nor led the "Marco Polo" from Jim Stewart's Marco Polo Folk Opera, commemorating that famous record-breaking sailing ship built in St. John, New Brunswick; for some reason (maybe because there's no room to breathe) folks were not contributing more than a few whimpers and gasps to the grand chorus. Judy got great support when she led "Roll the Old Chariot." Linn led the "Cannery Can Song" and then we managed to persuade Linn to lead C. Fox Smith's "Race of Long Ago," an arrangement I believe from sailing barge captain Bob Roberts, one of the first singers to re-discover this poet's fine nautical poems. I led my revised version of CFS's "Rio Grand," giving up the grand chorus. I also had fun leading "Wake Up Susiana," an obscure precursor to the better known "Wake Up Little Suzi" that I discovered some years ago lining an old sea chest. Tom led one of my favorite sailortown songs "Cruisin' Round Yarmouth" and ended the evening with "Leaving of Liverpool" as another tribute to Stan Hugill's 100th birthday bash taking place in that fair city this same weekend. Who was it who led "Northwest Passage"? They did a great job. We got Jeri to lead "Mollymauk" which gave me an excuse to try out another Bob Watson song "Neptune's Daughter."

One of the best compliments I heard was while I was taking a break in the men's room where an ex-coastguard man, who'd been playing darts by the bar, told me that he hadn't heard such good singing since he'd been with some of his buddies on his ship based in South Portland.

The kitchen crew was well-behaved and the service from the bar wench was impeccable.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Charley, the tall guy who does a lot of Stan Rogers' songs is Eric Bogle who usually only joins us when the weather outside is not conducive to hiking, kayaking, or other outdoor activities, etcet, etcet.

And Tom brought his guitar for a change, which meant he could sing a bunch of stuff he hasn't done for awhile, like "Holy Ground" and the other ones. (Sorry, brain is off someplace -- hope it's resting up.)

The young college crowd at the bar were there, evidently, for the football game on the tube. I don't know why, cuz they were so loud they couldn't actually HEAR what was on the telly... Well, prolly more beer there than in a dorm room.

We did have two representatives from Gloucester -- Alexander right from close to the beginning at least and then Gardi who, I think ;-) used a small handheld GPS device to find us.

Good session, all in all. Missed the folks that weren't there, but we had fun and sang a lot of songs anyway!

Begs the question: does Eric Bogle sing any Eric Bogle songs?

Someone sang "The Band Played Waltzing Matilda," Mark, I believe.

Who was the fella immediately to Jeri's left in the corner on the stool? I believe he was from Boston.

It was a good session!

Now, next month we should refresh some of our old Christmas sea songs. Let's see, there's the "Snow Shoveling Shanty," "Santa Come Back," and "Rolling Down to Bethlehem." Then there are songs like Robert Louis Stevenson's "Christmas at Sea" and C. Fox Smith's "Christmas Night" and "Home for Christmas." And there's also Jim Stewart's "The Winter Shanty." And what would Christmas be without a soleful rendition of Walt Kelly's "Good King Sauerkraut" or Tom Leher's "Christmas Carol"? And who can lead "We Wish You Would Clean Our Fish, Miss"?

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

I did it again, dammit!!!

Not Eric, SCOTT!!!

(As far as I know, Scott had never heard of Eric Bogle until I accidently called him Eric once...twice...oh gawd.)

Sorry. (So now you know one of my mnemonic tricks for remembering names.)

Alexander from Glouster was on my left/your right, and Gardi did "And the Band Played..."

Linn, it's OK. I called Bob 'Dave' last week, and I was sitting next to the REAL David!

Jeri-

Thanks for identifying Alexander; I was thinking he was from Boston.

There was a third Gloucesterite, a bg tal fella, who was sitting behind Gardi who led one song. He's got a nice deep voice but he seems shy about exercising it.

If Charlie is singing those songs, I am staying home!
Maybe "I Saw Three Ships Come Sailing In" but that's it!
Or else I play my tambourine.

Sins,

Did your whale tambourine finally come home?

Jeri,

I'm not real, merely a fig newton of your imagination, and getting less real as the months pass.

Dave, it was the other Dave. It was at the Press Room birthday party, and you seemed fairly insubstantial. (Or perhaps I should have been drinking fruit juice.)

Who did (and when?!?) "Deck the Halls With Boston Charlie?!?

I usually do that, but a little later in the season. Strictly traditional, of course.

Tom did start the Thanksgiving round both at this session and Friday night. Gotta do it.

Mark sang the Dillon Bustin song about the Gay Head lifesavers' rescue of the sinking ship. Wonderful song! Mark does a great job of ferreting out wonderful songs we've not heard before. I think I've only heard him sing this three times -- and had never heard it before he sang it.
