BS: Pelosi gets her ass kicked

From: GUEST,MM

Hoyer wins. Big time. As in 149-86.

Ironically, Dennis Kucinich had also back the Pelosi/Murtha ticket.

She did speak quite well out of both sides her mouth about the "anti-corruption" thing by backing John "Abscam" Murtha, the king of Pennsylvania pork.

Subject: RE: BS: Pelosi gets her ass kicked
From: GUEST

I don't think this has anything to do with morals. Has to do with political pragmatism.

Some say Pelosi has the best of both worlds now. She can say she backed an immediate withdrawal hawk, while kissing and making up with her former deputy/current rival "moderate" who is for phased withdrawal.

There is one thing & one thing only the next Congress will focus on, and that is the war in Iraq.

16 Nov 06 - 08:47 PM (#1886573)
Subject: RE: BS: Pelosi gets her ass kicked
From: Peace

Not so. The new Congress will have to look at taxation, old-age security and health care. Ther are getting a 7 trillion dollar debt, and certainly they will have to look at that too. The Iraq War will have to be addressed, but to say "the one and only thing the next Congress will focus on" is the War is shortsighted and misinformed.

Nah, what Pelosi did was show that she is loyal to a co-member of the House who has been supportive of the her... She knew perfectly well that Murtra wasn't goin' to prevail but got this little bit of politis outta the way...

Very shrewd...

Plue, in the loose, she disarmed alot of Repubs who were out to show her up...

Very shrewd, Part B...

Now she has been ***humbeled*** and therefore more human...

Very shrewd, Part C...

Don't mess with this broad.... She'll take yer lunch money every time...

Pelosi should have not have backed either candidate. Very poor judgement on her part I think. The new freshmen class of Democrats are a bit more conservative than Pelosi and folks who think like her ever imagined IMO.

Nothing will happen until Iraq is safely off the front burner. Pelosi HAS to accomplish a withdrawal, or at least the beginning phases of a genuine one, within her first 100 days, or the Dems are screwed for 2008.

She should have followed Harry's lead. I think she gambled and lost.

"new freshman class of Democrats" more conservative than Pelosi--very unlikely to have had much to do with the outcome of the Murtha-Hoyer contest.

Much more likely--Murtha's less-than-squeaky clean history---at a time the Democrats want to make it clear corruption will be, under them, a thing of the past.

And it's too bad--in a lot of areas Murtha made a lot of sense--and he had promised to support the anti-corruption drive to the hilt.

Since when would Doug R ever think a Democrat had good judgement? He'll take any opportunity to run down the party, no matter how corrupt and self-serving the Republicans are. Nothing new here, and I predict several years of sour grapes.

But you know that...

No, I think what we have going here is more than a little of Karl Rove's PR machine gettin' into "slander" gear and bashin' the Dems... And it's workin' to some degree 'catse the press is makin' a mountain out of a mole hill with Pelosi's backing of Murtha... hey, did anyone ever expect that politics would simply die with the Dems gettin' control of Congress???

Women have asses that deserve kicking as often as men. The reference is to the newly crowned speaker, not the gender of the newly crowned speaker, which is irrelevant to this discussion.

What is being discussed is the margin by which Pelosi's hand picked majority leader was defeated in the vote by the House Democrats when they met this past week to vote on new leadership.

Pelosi's boy lost by a wide margin, hence the use of the term "got her ass kicked". In this context, it means the speaker lost the election big time.

Bobert, you sure are trying to spin things like this to make it match the rose colored glasses you bought at Wal Mart, perhaps? Or have you been drinking too much of the Donkey Koolaid?

Nearly every Friday night, I watch the political talk show "Washington Week" on PBS. My interpretation of events surrounding Pelosi's ass kicking were no different than the majority opinion expressed by the mainstream media pundits on Friday night's show.

I really don't understand how you can interpret the loss of Murtha to some crafty, savvy political move on her part. The widespread conventional wisdom at this point was she overreached, and it may have weakened her right out of the gate with her caucus. She put too much emphasis on her loyalty to Murtha, at the expense of getting off to a winning start, with the wind of the election still at her back.

As I said above, I thought she would have appeared much more politically savvy & in control of her caucus had she played it like Reid is playing the jockeying for position in the Senate Dem leadership races. She should have kept her mouth shut, and been behind the scenes and low key. She shouldn't have publicly backed Murtha, because he had so little support.

Now, it not only looks like she doesn't know how to count the votes, it also looks like she may not be very good at swinging them the way she wants them to go.

Not the best start for a novice Speaker.

Also, the majority leader in the House is now her enemy. I fail to see how that is in any way "politically savvy". The majority leader is who gets the agenda pushed through that the Speaker sets.

Why set yourself for a Machiavellian nightmare right from the start?

Or has her ego grown so big, that she really thought she had much more power and influence than she actually has?

Nah, GUEST, I haven't had any Donkey Coolaid in years... Too much sugar, you know...

But let's get real hear... Pelosi did what she had to do with Murtha... She owed it to him... He had helped her gain her position as minority leader and had thrown himself on a political grenade for the party with his anti-war position... He deserved and got her endorsement... What he didn't get was her "full bore" arm-twistin'...

She played it right... She probably knew that he was going to lose but she showed her loyalty... Only in the eyes of Rove and his PR folks, tv puppets included, did this in anyway hurt her... I mean, lets get real here... The elections are over and now it's gonna be a rough ride with Rove & Co. waiting to call attention to everything this woman does...

The new 'n improved Rove Plan for '08 is allready in high gear...

Pelosi is being rubbished by the Bushites--since that's the way politics works.   Fear of a woman has nothing to do with it. Hilary has big negatives---and not just among Republicans. She's seen as even more as an opportunist than a lot of politicians---and that's saying a lot. Pelosi stands up for what she believes--and when you do that, you're a target.

Bobert and Ron, perhaps you haven't heard/seen/read that Democrats are actually the ones saying Pelosi blew it right at the start?

You know, some of those 149 of them who DIDN'T vote for her boy, and against her first act as Madam Speaker?

Come ON you guys. What is so crafty about losing your first vote, and being left with your political enemy as your #2 man, and him knowing you went against him?

That ain't exactly a match made in heaven.

Remember Hastert/Delay? We could be seeing a similar situation here, where the majority leader actually has more power than the Speaker. Only time will tell, of course. But it is a distinct possibility that she shot herself in the foot, and could go into her first session of Congress as Speaker, with a limp.

It is not reasonable to expect intelligent people to debate with somebody who insists on being totally anonymous---since anybody who does not take a name or handle is ipso facto Guest--and therefore more than one person, on the same thread, can be called just Guest--and discussion then becomes impossible.

This has happened before

I don't care whether you do this--which is a totally reasonable requirement--or not.

But if you don't-and stick to your handle--I, for one,, will not waste my time trying to figure out which Guest I am supposedly talking to. And I hope others will also refuse to play your game.

This ridiculous quest for power and the fanatical achievement of ultimate authority are both seperately and together perversions of the 'essence' of Democracy. Spin is the 'tool of choice' consistantly used to corrupt the 'democratic process' by emperors and dictators alike.

Democracy isn't about 'matches made in heaven'. It is about gathering accurate information, thinking for yourself, communicating your beliefs clearly and ingenuously, and responding/bending gracefully to the will of the 'well informed' majority.

...and to disagree without intimidation.

There is no 'gridiron' here with a scoreboard, spectators, won-loss stats, and time remaining in a game destined to be won or lost in a winner take all sweepstakes... Were all in this together, and our system is (was?) designed so that we could/should all be able to compose ourselves with an inclusive posture towards people of all political persuasions. The only opposing team on this field is a combination of misinformation and predjudice... and they are us.
