BS: Famous short sayings from comics...

Subject: BS: Famous short sayings from comics...

The most famous of all may be Bugs Bunny's "Ehh...What's up, Doc?" or it may be Tweety Bird's "I t'ought I taw a puddy tat...I DID...I DID taw a puddy tat!"

There are plenty of them. So who was it who said this one on frequent occasions:

"DAAAAWK!"

And after that is answered, volunteer some others for this thread.

I'll never forget the comic strip in the "Knockout" entitled "Our Ernie, Mrs Entwhistle's Little Lad". He had a pet caterpillar and they had adventures every week. The last frame always ended with Ernie's dad saying, "Daft, I call it!"

I can't get to my collection right now...all boxed up.

But I will submit that ANYTHING said by Calvin to Hobbes is a classic.

Also...

From either Lucy or Linus..."I love mankind; its people I can't stand."

From the Wizard of Id...(from a soldier in a long line) "Are we advancing or retreating?" His buddy responds, "Where is Sir Rodney?"
"Out in front." "Then we are retreating."

I would also suggest that in addition to "Pogo", "Shoe" is one of the best drawn and politically adroit comics ever produced.

Rodney Dangerfield had the best opening I've ever heard in a stand-up act. "I'm doing alright now, but you should've seen me last week." Then a string of hard-luck one-liners. First time I saw him on television I laughed so hard I couldn't catch my breath. Had to turn off the TV.

Yes, Calvin may have said that. I do recall some incident of the sort. However, there was another comic strip character who used the expression long before Calvin & Hobbes came along...and used it frequently.

We seem to be getting a crossover between comic strips/cartoons and live standup comics happening here. Well, I guess that's okay.

"Come viss me to ze Casbah" – Pepe Lepew in a Looney Tunes cartoon.

By the way, the character Pepe Lepew was invented as a deliberate parody of the character Pepe Le Moko, played by Charles Boyer in the 1938 film "Algiers," but the line "Come with me to the Casbah" does NOT appear in the film.

Beware of slight thread drift. Rapaire, regarding item 2 on your list, "Who or what was Mickey Dugan?" —anyone recall who Vickie Dougan was?

Back to the subject, I can't recall offhand where Dagwood Bumstead worked, but his boss was a Mr. Dithers. Neighbor was Herb Woodley. The postman developed a severe flinch when he neared the Bumstead residence because Dagwood, who was always late for work, would burst through the front door like a missile out of a silo and they'd collide violently, scattering mail like confetti.

Prince Valiant hung out at Camelot a lot when he wasn't off on some sort of mission or quest. He originally came from Thule (his father was King Aguare [sp?]). The actual location of Thule wasn't specified, but one can presume that it was somewhere on the northwest coast of Norway. I remember seeing some of the first Prince Valiant strips in the late 1930s, belly-flopped on the living room floor with the Sunday funnies. A few years ago, there was an exhibit of great comic strip art at the Frye Museum in Seattle, and I had a chance to see some of Hal Foster's original strips—the original drawings. That man was an Artist!

Here's one for you:   Would you give this guy a lift?

Bingo, frogprince!

If I remember correctly, Vickie Dougan was an aspiring "starlet" back in the late 50s. As far as I've been able to tell, she never really went much of anywhere, and the only national publicity she ever got was when Lou Gottlieb wrote a song about her (I think it was Lou Gottlieb who wrote it, but I'm not sure) and the Limeliters recorded it.

It's been many decades since I've heard the record, but if I'm remembering it rightly, according to Gottlieb's intro to the song, Vickie showed up at a Hollywood premier or other gala occasion wearing a dress that was cut so low in the back that "she had discovered an entirely new cleavage!"

As I recall, the title of the song was "Vickie, Turn Your Back on Me."
