Hi all,

As someone who feels a bit like she was born yesterday re.folkscene. I was wondering whether anybody could point me in the right direction of folk clubs/sessions etc in my local area or somewhere with good transport links.

I hail from the SE area of London in Plumstead/Woolwich.

Could any of you kind people advise?

Two to start you off on your search for "folk" music in SE London and North Kent...

  • For joining in sessions, open mic etc: FolkMob

  • For (possibly) the best line up of guest artists in the area: Dartford Folk Club

folkmob is the great place for you to start. It's in Eltham and has a few members from the Woolwich/plumstead area.

There's a Kiwi link here. Kath Tait
is somewhere around there, I believe. Some of her links might help you (they're on the end snail.) She's a very funny lass.
We haven't seen her for a few years but if you do meet up with her, say Hi from Robyn and Mitch Park.

You have to be prepared to travel as performing clubs are few and far flung these days

I was lucky, when I was living in Catford there were clubs in Bromley, Beckenham, Lee, Blackheath, Catford, Orpington Downe Croyden, Herne Hill, and Dartford with an occasional foray into Plumstead.

Dartford has evolved from thosed days as has the Thursday orpington club

Good luck

Hiya Gizmo
welcome to Mudcat. You would be more than welcome to come and join us at the Tudor Barn (Folk Mob) We are a friendly lot and love it when new people come along.
Hope to see you there.

Debs ;-)

I notice that none of you have mentioned my club in Orpington. New faces always welcome, especially singers who play instruments other than guitars. We have plen ty of them already.

Thanks alot for all of your replies.

I will try to do the folk mob at Eltham, but unfortunately due to dancing on a wednesday eve, I probably won't get there until after 9pm.

But as I say, I definitely will try to make it.

Also Girl Friday, thank you for your link, but I do play guitar also - I'm afraid. Unfortunately I won't be able to do Friday nights unless I learn how to drive as it takes forever by the 51 bus to Orpington from here. Yet if I ever get a chance - I will try it out.

Just checked out the Dartford club. I used to hang around the area when I was a wee sprightly thing all of 15 years ago.

(Still wee, not quite as sprightly though.)

Dartford is fairly easy to get to, by bus or train, so probably will try to get there on a Tuesday. Some names even I recognise have played there.

Once again thanks for the info, time and babysitting pending - will try to get to these places.

Ok Gizmo. Never mind if you play guitar you can still come. It may take a while on the 51 but they are regular and reliable. Orpington also has a train station, and the club is a short walk down the hill from it .So if you can get to Dartford? I can get there by bus but not back again after about 10pm. I don't drive either, so rely on others with cars. friends always help out when they can, I've found.
