Is there a 2007 Whitby folk week

Whitby Folk Week 2007 looking at their artist website it says 10 September 2006 – More to come – maybe?!with only Sid Kipper there. I am aware it has changed managment but they look a bit unproffesional at the moment as nothing has changed by now there was something of a guest list. We (my wife and I ) usually buy each other a ticket for christmas, Is it happening or is awaiting a rescue like Sidmouth?

Just a guess but maybe the "More to come – maybe?!" quote, indicates a tounge in cheek touch of humour from the webmaster while he awaits more info.

There certainly is a Whitby Folk Week 2007.
The new organizers are hard at it sorting things out for the festival as I type this message. Wait and see how good it will be,I am looking forward to it, and so are many other people.
All the best

Knowing members of the new organising committee, one thing they will NOT be is uprofessional.
That said, there will be a heck of a lot of stuff to organise, and Malcolm probably had most of what needed to be done in his head through having done it for so long. As for the web site, the festival is not until August and most people who will be buying advance tickets will probably not be thinking about doing so until May or June, when deadlines for early purchase reductions concentrate the wallet. Web sites are one of the items which are fairly low on the agenda for November.
As for booking artistes. I have no idea what the new committee's policy will be. They may keep something resembling Malcolm's set-up, or they may have a diferent agenda. They may want a guest list which isn't identical to every Whitby for the past 20 years.
As for performers. Often an individual will perform at a club or festival because they have a long friendship with the organiser. Often they will ask a smaller fee than when performing at other places without the personal history. When the organiser retires, that long frienship is not with the new organiser, so the rules and expectations change. The new committee may be having to negotiate very different contracts than Malcolm had to deal with.

Just a few completely uninformed an personal observations.
Quack!

I wouldn't be frightened Betsy, Malcolm was the front man, but he couldnt have managed it without stalwart support before during and after the event. I have not been to many Whitby's but enjoyed the ones i have been to and intend to go for a little bit at least next year.

I have to laugh at geoff the Ducks, suggestions, that people would be doing Malcolm Storey A FAVOUR, ha ha ha ha .ha ha ho ho ho.
The epitome of bluntness and frugality, and not a very good cricketer either.
I was treated better by Graham Binless AND e.f.d.s.s..Dick Miles.

If you check the Websites for the other big August Festivals, Sidmouth, Broadstairs, Towersey, Cropredy, none of them have a line up published yet for 2007. Only Shrewsbury/Bromyard seems to have their main acts booked so far so Whitby does not seem out of step to me at this time of the year. Me thinks the daggers are out a bit previous!!!

I suspect that as usual we just have a troll attempting to stir up trouble, but do not see any need to start feeding it.
The festival is not until the end of August next year. There will be plenty of time to put information on web sites befor ethen. I do not recall the festival nder Malcolm having much useful information at all online.
I, for one will miss Malcolm, as I have enjoyed many years of banter and insults in both directions. I doubt that I will have as many complaints about the new organisers.

Trust me the organisation is well in place and some of us have been booked but give them a chance to get replies in and sorted. It takes a lot of effort on all our parts to get musicians and bands in place.

Dear GUEST - it doesn't really matter who is on, most of the essence of Whitby happens in the pubs. As long as you avoid the more turgid of the "singarounds" (and, obviously, all of the Morris dancers) you are OK.

Let's face it, if you live in the UK, you can get to see/hear most of the names in or around your local area all year round anyway.

How you getting on?
By the way. It definitely is a troll. Real people don't keep coming out with the same rubbish and start accusing posters of trading insults when they have made a perfectly reasonable and informative answer to a question asked.

I know the comittee is working hard to get it all in place for next August, it is a big festival with a lot to organize, in a small town. the main guest list normally comes out in April, I know I put up the posters in the past. It is going ahead and will be great as always so do not panic

I Don't know who's on either, but we've been approached by John Howson. He's doing the artists bookings, so it's likely to be a similar sort of line up to before in the general sense of strongly traditional, but no doubt there will be differences of personal preference.

Mr Dean, how the devil are you, longtime no hear old boy !

You're all being very naughty, someone (who it appears) who may not be familiar with the way Whitby Folk Festival works asks a reasonable question and the answers that come back are not on the whole very informative. Be gentle with the Guest, answer what you can and explain that the rest is still in abeyance. The task of organising guests, venues, dates, times, stewards etc etc must be horrendous and takes a considerable amount of time and effort by the good team who run the festival. But even if the team failed there would still be a gathering in Whitby at the prescribed time as the fringe is so big and would continue with or without the festival proper.

From: GUEST,selby

Mr Guest I agree totally with Raggytash
I raised the issue a couple of weeks ago about the web site with a member of the new organisation and understand what you are trying to say the web site can be slightly misleading. The Whitby festival has been run for many years by a group of people headed up by Malcolm, seeing he has retired some of his team has quite naturaly gone with him. Therefore people are in new roles facing new and old challenges and nothing is going to be the same, I believe there is a meeting shortly and some of the issues wil be sorted, I am sure. You say that you normally buy tickets for Xmas presents well go ahead and do it, if it all falls through which I am sure it will not, I am sure you will get your money back for a summer treat. I know that there is at least one intresting idea to see, this has been tested and worked well in a field not a covered venue so for that alone,I think you will not be dissapointed. Please rember the people doing the organising have day jobs as well, love folk music enough to take on a monumental challenge want this to suceed and do have feelings
Keith (selby)

About time some new blood took over Whitby FF. Anyone who watched the sad decline of Poynton folk centre and its once-famous Easter festival during the 1980s, due to the calcifying effect of too much control being vested in too few hands, will have seen the same thing happening at Whitby in recent years.

Onwards and upwards, Whitby.

Agree R in M, it has certainly lacked drive and freshness in the last few years. Many have said new ideas are needed and I certainly hope the new team can deliver for what can be a brilliant festival in and excellent location. It needs to be team work that delivers.

I'm a well-worn Scottish festival goer and had never ventured further south than Newcastleton until August when I partook of my first Whitby. Although I really just dipped my toes, not knowing anyone and not knowing where to go or who to see, I loved it. It opened a whole new world of music to me and I confess to emitting short snorts of excitement when I saw the new website. I'll be buying my tickets shortly after New Year. And I will be mithering people on here later in the year for their sterling advice. Roll on summer...

Say what one will about Whitby Week, it's the only festival that's been able to drag me across the Atlantic to attend. Four times, no less. I devoutly hope that any changes will not be drastic.
