Karen,

I'll try to satisfy your request in two parts.

(1) To play Midi files from the database doesn't require a whole heap of fancy gear. As long as your PC has one of those tiny little speakers built in, you can listen to Midi files from the Digital Tradition. (I should point out that more complex Midis from other sources require a sound card to be installed - but not for the Digital Tradition). Having said that there are a couple of little tweaks that may have to be done to setup your computer. What do you see and hear when you try to play a Midi file? Is it your computer to fiddle with?

(2) I can and will put the sheet music of Rigs Of Time on my Web page, but I would rather encourage you to try (1) first.

Karen, your work PC will have a little speaker that goes 'Beep' and you can set up your PC to play Midis from the DT, but I'll leave my evangelism until another time.

Only because I'm a sucker for experimentation I have put the sheet music for 'Rigs Of Time' on its own newly created Web page.

Dear John Thanks very much for the misic on your website. You must think I'm a computer illiterate. I did try to do what you first suggested but it didn't work. I have never heard a beep when I set up, honest! I do a lot of political singing in folk clubs and with a Socialist choir and will try to write a 4-part arrangement to Rigs of time. Thanks again.

Hi Karen, I know the whole Midi thing must appear a bit daunting, but even regulars are sometimes surprised that they've been missing out on something that was only a few key strokes away.

Karen, I find the current folk scene very exciting and extremely varied in Australia. Aboriginal rights are justifiably fair game for song writers at the moment, but at the risk of offending others I find some of the material you seek as self indulgent and/or clicheed - but I guess I've been viewing through the eyes of a performer (or more recently for a brief period as a festival judge). Most of the political things I've done tend to be satirical in style, but this often dates very quickly. I'll keep my eyes and ears open and let you know - there is some absolutely great stuff around, particularly in modern idioms. Have you come across any of Midnight Oils mayerial?

Lots of Aussies could contribute to this thread - perhaps you could start a new thread with a more eye catching title?

The Oils are a damn fine Australian rock group with a social conscience. Their fearless and hairless leader is a guy called Peter Garrett who is now quite an Australian icon, having gained a degree of credibility as an environmental politician - most of the population between 20 and 50 would know his name. The group is Midnight Oil, but alas I have none of their recordings.
