Bah! I once knew the words but it's ages since I sang it and I don't know if I ever wroter them down. From (my not very reliable these days) memory, the chorus went something like:

There'll be trouble over Bridgwater tonight
There's going to be a beastly row all right
??? (Bah! can't even remember this bit)
All over bridgwater tonight

Maybe this fragment will help jog someone else's memory? The song was about a bloke who wanted to get revenge on the swine who stole his girlfriend, by flying over him and bombing him with manure, IIRC.

Wrote not wroter. (No, Half Man Half Biscuit pinched the title from Trevor Crozier.)

The HMHB diversion has come up before in: Lyr Add: Trouble over Bridgewater, where it was rightly dismissed. Despite that thread title, there are no lyrics posted - it should have been a request.

Looking at the other thread above, there is some speculation that the song is a parody of Simon & Garfunkel's Bridge Over Troubled Water - it isn't. The title is based on that of the S&G song, but the song itself is completely different and bears no similarity to the S&G song, or indeed anything else of theirs.

The Wurzels used to mention it in their act, although I don't think they've ever sung it - they (jokingly) claimed that Simon & Garfunkel had based their song on their own song of that title (which doesn't really exist) - if that makes any sense!

Scrump has come up with a thousand percent more than anyone else so far, good on yeh mate. I've had more replies about that Tramere group and people asking if I didn't mean Bridge Over Troubled Water!!!
BTW I have this running on a couple of forum so me net is spread wide. One thing I have found is that the LP is worth its weight in gold; all I have to do is find one in a charity shop!
Thanks to all so far.

Strangly enough although I spent a lot of time with Trevor in 69/70 including a 4 or 5 month stint working as medieval minstrels (don't ask!) I can't recall a single word of that particular song, whereas most others of his remain in my memory in some degree or another. I see that the LP came out in 1977 which may mean he wrote it later than my main contact with him.

Kevin Sheldon, his co lyric writer and friend, who I think was mentioned in the previous thread was a great character. I recall one song they wrote about the fashion for men to wear old fur coats in the early 70's which we rehearsed and were going to record as a single and get on TOTP and be rich and famous etc. Wonder where that idea went......

Happy days and a sadly missed character.

Further to Trouble over Bridgwater, does anyone have the words to
"A Pub with No Beards" and another one about "Making this band the best in the land" The something something Jug Band.

The last one is "The Piddletrenthide Jug Band" (but there are various versions with different villages in the name, e.g. Adge Cutler/Charlton Mackrell.) I'm pretty sure someone posted the words in Mudcat thread before - try searching for Piddletrenthide. I know the other song but I can't recall the words.

Aha, I remembered the missing words from the chorus:

There'll be hell to pay for sure,
When I drops that 'orse manure

Now all I need to do is remember all the verses... :(

Every little helps!

I suggest you try Christopher Joe Beard, founder member of the Purple Gang and co-author of "Trouble". I had the great joy of playing the song onstage with him and Trev and a few others at the Cambridge Folk Festival, but as an instrumentalist I can't recall the lyrics either!

Joe can be found at christopherjoe.beard@facebook.com. Good luck.
