Is it 'I followed her into the West' This is a Tom Paxton song, and one I still do occasionally.

From a sound sample:

INTO THE WEST
Danny O'Keefe and Fred Tackett

Like wild geese, we all have flown
Those ancient lands we once called home;
So many mothers' only sons,
So many lovers' only ones.
Gone away like....

[Recorded by Tim O'Brien on "The Crossing" (1999).]

This one? :-

Like wild geese we all have flown
Those ancient lands we once called home
So many mothers homeless sons
So many lovers only ones
Gone away like all the rest
To find our fortunes in the west

Still the fire will always burn
The voice in the heart that cries return
Those emerald hills so far away
Will haunt us back again some day

The rivers long the waters wide
The west begins on the other side
Put a skip in your step now
Dry a tear from your eye
Turn around and wave goodbye
Brave the currents of time and tide
Til' you're safe on the other side
Its a wild dream that never ends
Calls us all into the west

What takes us into mystery
We leave behind the history
Like every sun that rose at dawn
Into the west we all have gone

Still the fire will always burn
The voice in the heart that cries return
Those emerald hills so far away
Will haunt us back again some day

The rivers long the waters wide
The west begins on the other side
Put a skip in your step now
Dry a tear from your eye
Turn around and wave goodbye
Brave the currents of time and tide
Til' you're safe on the other side
Its a wild dream that never ends
Calls us all into the west

Can anyone come up with the chords?

Good song, and it is a nice recording too, on the album. I don't recall anything tricky about the chords, but I haven't tried it ... I'll look at it this afternoon and see if I can list 'em back to the thread.

Jed - Thought y'a said that the chords wouldn't be tricky! Very subtle changes from what I remember.

Here are the chords I use (minus some melody lines)

Into the West

Like [C#m7] wild geese, we [Dsus2]all have flown
Those [Asus2]ancient lands we [Ab7sus4]once called [Ab7]home;
[C#m7]So many mothers' only [Dsus2]sons,
[Asus2]So many lovers' [Ab7sus2]only [Ab7]ones.
[C#m7]Gone away like [Dsus2]all the rest
To [Asus2]find our fortunes [Ab7sus2]in the [Ab7]west [Ab7sus2] [Ab7]

|[E]...[B/A]|[E/G#]...[C#m]|[E]...[Bsus4] |[B]…|

[B]Still the fire will [Abm]always burn
The [Cm7]voice in the heart that [B7sus4]cries [B7]return
[B]Those emerald hills so [Abm]far away
Will [C#m]haunt us back [B7sus4]again some [B7]day [B7sus4] [B7]

[E]The rivers [A]long the [E]waters [C#m]wide
[F#m]The west begins on the [B7sus4]other [B7]side
[E]Put a skip in your [A]step now
[E]Dry a tear from your [C#m]eye
[F#m]Turn around and [B7sus4]wave good[B7]bye
[E]Brave the [A]currents of [E]time and [C#m]tide
[F#m]Till you're safe on the [B7sus4]other [B7]side
[E]Its a wild [A]dream that [E]never [C#m]ends
[F#m]Calls us all in[B7sus4]to the [B7]West [B7sus4] [B7]

|[E][A]|[E][A]|[E][A]|[E] |

What takes us into mystery
We leave behind the history
Like every sun that rose at dawn
Into the west we all have gone

Still the fire will always burn
The voice in the heart that cries return
Those emerald hills so far away
Will haunt us back again some day

The rivers long the waters wide
The west begins on the other side
Put a skip in your step now
Dry a tear from your eye
Turn around and wave goodbye
Brave the currents of time and tide
Til' you're safe on the other side
Its a wild dream that never ends
Calls us all into the west

Note: I think Tim O'Brien uses and open tuning, so this is an approximation.
