02 Dec 06 - 03:29 PM (#1898490) Subject: New Year's Day session, Stanstead Abbott From: Leraud For numerous years in the past there has been a lunchtime/afternoon session at the Crown in Buntingford. This is no longer an optionj as the landlord and landlady have been to a meeting about the new licencing laws and feel they can no longer have us. The landlord at the Red Lion in Stanstead Abbotts is keen to have us in his restaurant area, which will not be open for meals on New Year's Day. Stanstead Abbotts is just off the A10 (you take the A414 Harlow/Chelmsford turnoff and it's about ½ mile from there). Would anyone be interested, before I make a firm committment? Either reply to this thread or pm me. All the best Lynne Heraud |

30 Dec 06 - 12:26 PM (#1922287) Subject: RE: New Year's Day session, Stanstead Abbott From: Lanfranc Hi Thanks for the concern, gang. I'm out, a bit battered and woozy after the op, with a left arm that is back to having just one elbow joint again but which has a new fissure from elbow to shoulder held together by 40-odd little metal staples and a bruise that has started to change from black to a fetching shade of brown. Fitting my new titanium humerus reinforcement took a while longer this time, because they had to remove the one that got bent in the accident and dig the bits of broken screw out of the bone. However, I have more mobility in my arm today than I had yesterday, which is an obvious improvement. I'm under medical instruction not to try to play guitar until I have my post-op visit to the clinic on 8th January, and driving is still a no-no for several weeks and sailing for even longer. Hope I get a pretty physiotherapist! Practising "Sir Patrick Spens" and an a capella version of "A Hard Rain" in the hope of making it along on Monday afternoon. You have been warned! Alan |

30 Dec 06 - 01:31 PM (#1922334) Subject: RE: New Year's Day session, Stanstead Abbott From: GUEST,visitor Well, have been to one or two folk clubs elsewhere, so assume singing and music by whoever is brave enough to perform/knows the words. That about right? I just wanted to check it wasn't more akin to a friends' get-together, that's all. Would it be OK to bring teenage children - promise they'll behave, even if the younger one, being high-functioning autistic, is a bit apt to chatter on in a monotone unless warned - he does like folk music though, and sat through a three and a half hour session at Walthamstow Folk Club with only the occasional faux pas. |

03 Jan 07 - 03:25 PM (#1925859) Subject: RE: New Year's Day session, Stanstead Abbott From: Leraud The Landlord or the Red Lion was most apologetic about the IPA running out. I had told him there would only be 15 to 30 people and there were in excess of 60. Next time we'll know ................. |

05 Jan 07 - 09:14 PM (#1927863) Subject: RE: New Year's Day session, Stanstead Abbott From: Girl Friday When the I.P.A. (Yes, it was Greene King,) ran out there was John Smith's and Guinness, and no doubt, some lager. Not the stuff for those of us real ale drinkers, though I do enjoy a Guinness, but prefer Murphy's. |
09 Jan 07 - 01:49 PM (#1931578) Subject: RE: New Year's Day session, Stanstead Abbott From: The Unicorn Man If only I WAS there Girl Friday. I would have sold you some of my YUMMY real ale from my camper van. MMMMMM. (may even have given you some.) OOOOO. Until next time. |
10 Jan 07 - 07:14 AM (#1932189) Subject: RE: New Year's Day session, Stanstead Abbott From: Scrump Unicorn Man, I agree - serving GK IPA should be against the law. If a pub has any other real ale (except Abbot, Old Speckled Hen or Ruddles County, which I also avoid on principle) I would drink that instead. But in this case, it would have to be Guinness. |
10 Jan 07 - 11:09 AM (#1932362) Subject: RE: New Year's Day session, Stanstead Abbott From: The Unicorn Man Well I always have my own supply in my camper van, just incase of any such emergencys. Every time I go over a sleeping policeman I can hear the lovely sound of chinckling bottles of yummy ale. |
10 Jan 07 - 11:13 AM (#1932367) Subject: RE: New Year's Day session, Stanstead Abbott From: The Unicorn Man I just thought, a name like scrump should'nt you be drinking cider? |
10 Jan 07 - 11:27 AM (#1932388) Subject: RE: New Year's Day session, Stanstead Abbott From: Scrump Well, I drink both real cider and real ale if I can get them (not mixed together though - yuk!). Real cider is a bit difficult to find in some parts of the country, including the Herts/Beds area, but there are a few pubs around that sell it if you know where to find them. Doesn't the pub mind if you drink your own bottles of ale instead of buying theirs (even if they don't have anything worth drinking, e.g. when they only sell keg rubbish)? Talking about Greene King, there's a pub in Berkshire (Wallingford I think - or was it Wantage?) that changed hands. The new owners threw out the GK beers and got some better stuff in, and put up a large banner outside it saying "Guaranteed No Greene King Beer" or words to that effect. This attracts people in, as you can understand. I drove past it not long ago, before I knew the reason for the banner. |
11 Jan 07 - 12:14 PM (#1933423) Subject: RE: New Year's Day session, Stanstead Abbott From: The Unicorn Man Well I don't let them see me, if I can help it, but if they don't supply what I want, that's to bad. we will have to go to this GREAT pub some time. |
13 Jan 07 - 05:57 PM (#1935617) Subject: RE: New Year's Day session, Stanstead Abbott From: Girl Friday Oh Dear... my club has a contract with G.K.... although,to compensate, they do keep a nice drop of Spotty Chicken. |
13 Jan 07 - 06:31 PM (#1935654) Subject: RE: New Year's Day session, Stanstead Abbott From: Scrump (Getting seriously off-topic now - sorry!) Another thing I hate about Greene King - you go into their pubs and they have a "guest" beer which is always "Morlands" Old Speckled Hen or "Ruddles" County, or "Ridley's" Old Bob. Guess where these "guest" beers are brewed? Yes, Bury St Edmunds, at the GK brewery (these are all breweries taken over and closed down in the past few years by GK). When is a guest not a guest? When it's a beer in a Greene King pub. It should be illegal to bill an ale as "guest" when it's brewed by the same brewery that owns the pub, IMO. Now they've taken over and closed Hardy & Hanson's Nottingham brewery. So expect guest "Kimberley" ales soon at your local GK pub! (Continuing my one-man GK boycott, except under duress) >:-( |
