Master of voices/ impersonations that he was , one track was his take on an interview which was broadcast on BBC in the mid-fifties between Gilbert Harding and the then young, yet already renowned for his capacity for the drink, Brendan Behan. It started out as follows and went rapidly downhill thereafter:- Harding character (after effusive introduction): So, tell me now Mr.... Behan character(interrupting): I'll tell ya nuthin' ya spot-faced bastard. Yis murdered me mammy's people and damn you all for.....etc. That young Parkinson could learn a thing or two about interviewing techniques yet. |

That crazy man is an inventor of sorts, not content with giving Kenny and Byrne their true pedigree, he continued his attack on RTE by ramming his car through the security barriers and continued in through the revolving doors. The crazy gatecrasher is a Paul Stokes and he was airing his grievance with RTE claiming that the Station had refused him time to discuss a device he claims to have created that would stop the toll of road deaths across Ireland. He claims that it would change the way we drive, introducing cars that would drive themselves and which are fitted with GPS systems, he has been trying to sell his invention for £5 million. There goes another brilliant invention, what were RTE thinking about, get him back. |

From my East coast American perspective, all I see is a wacked old man who has gotten into a TV studio and called the host of a show a buch of nasty names on air. Not any more clever than our own Michale Richards event a few weeks back. I am amazed at the vociferous tone of those who think this was a great moment in RTE history...and nearly everyone who commented seemed to think so. Given that the host may have been a bit of a prat...he seems to think that Eurovision Song Contest is a laudable event. Still, the old duffer seemed like a clear whack-job. Why is there so much gleeful cackling over this? What's the backstory? |

Rapaire, or should it be Raparee, has got it wrong about Ireland, religion is way down the scale as far as most of our people are concerned, the fact that Bertie Aherne the Taoiseach is separated from his wife and for a time was living with another woman, didn`t raise too many eyebrows in Ireland. Can you imagine Bush doing the same, the bible thumpers in the US would have a fit. Rap me boy it is all changed, the country you imagined is all of that a distant memory. |
