On Friday, 29th December there will be a barn dance/ceilidh in aid of the Jenny Pope fund.

Jen disappeared in Ecuador last January, and her husband Dave and son Stef have been out there since March trying to find out what happened to her (go here to find out more). Obviously this has proved expensive and, after an inital round of fund-raising, Dave and Stef are in need of further support.

The dance runs from 8 pm onwards at the Yorkshire Ward Conservative Club, Carhill Road, Mossley, with The Rising Sun Band (caller: Ralph Smethurst) as caller. It costs a fiver, and we are hoping for a good turnout, so come along you North-West folk persons, whether experienced dancers or not. We're hoping to make it a bit of a party....

If you don't know him, Dave Pope is an excellent singer and all round musician, playing fiddle, guitar, mandolin specializing in old country songs, Bluegrass and Old Time tunes, who was often to be found at Bluegrass festivals running a session round his portable camp fire that I really loved to be at. The songs, tunes and humour were magic.
Last January his wife, Jen vanished in the last couple of weeks of a six month South America back packing trip, after reaching Banos in Equador. Dave and his son Stef dropped their jobs and went as soon as they could. They've kept the local police on their toes, and it now looks like a suspect will soon be brought to trial. They're keeping a diplomatic silence about the competence of the cops, but reading between the lines it looks like they need to be there for justice to be done, and to wait out appeals and general legal time wasting.
So, if you want to help, go to the Ceilidh or use the link in the previous message to contribute to the fund.
Thanks
Ray

Thank you, Ray, for that additional info.

Would you be the Ray that I sat next to in the Old-Time session one afternoon in the Bedford at Sidmouth? I was the fiddler who talked to you about Wales.

Any chance one of the moderators could get this thread retitled to mention Jen's name? Something like "Jen Pope Fund Ceilidh, Mossley, UK"

Thanks,
Brian

Yes, Brian - that was me. We had a few good tunes. Yes I agree about changing the thread name.
