Joan Armatrading was born this day (9 December) in 1950 on St Kitts.

Once More With Feeling.

Great voice! And such a quiet-seeming lady for someone who sings with such power.

Slight digression. I flew into St Kitts a couple of years ago on the first 747 ever to fly there. Virtually the whole island turned out to witness the spectacle, and as we got off the 'plane we were greeted by the crowd, shouting, waving and clapping. I felt like quite the celebrity.

Going home, we had to fly to Antigua first, simply because the airport on St Kitts doesn't have a lift high enough to load the food. Not a lot of people know that.

I bet when the plane landed, everyone was "Down to Zero"

I had to Google "Joan Armatrading" to 'get' The Unicorn Man's witty comment.

For other people who may not know that much about Joan Armatrading, here's an excerpt from Joan Armatrading's Artist Profile :

"Working with such a varied cast comes naturally to Armatrading. Effortlessly eclectic, her sound ranges from share soul to sophisticated pop --an apt mix for a performer born under the palms of the West Indies and raised beneath the smokestacks of Birmingham England. Her first guitar a gift from her mother - a pawn shop exchange for two old prams - Joan by the early 70's had moved to London and released her debut, Whatever's for Us. The career that followed has seen the birth of classics - "Love and Affection," Down to Zero" "Drop the Pilot" "Me Myself I." Joan has been a long time supporter and performer for the Princes Trust. "
