She reminds me of 'Our Gang' comedy stars but very 'New Age'. Its very funny and very true. Can you believe that censorship is cloaked as child advocacy? How dare they call this abuse while ignoring the number of children that have died as a direct result of U.S. aggression. |

As to the monologue, I think the commentary by Bill O'Reilly was far more obscene than anything the child said. |

Maybe I wouldn't think Darla was cute; I don't know ... Anyway, a good actor? Probably. I didn't watch the uncle's clip. 13 Dec 06 - 08:52 PM (#1908977) Subject: RE: BS: Get your priorities straight From: Stilly River Sage You think being an American Indian doesn't involve taking a position? The position is usually "underdog." But then, you're probably a white middle class person who doesn't have a clue as to what it is like to be American Indian, especially in some of the marginalized reservation communities. Just because you can't see it doesn't mean it isn't there. Actually, the video is brilliant, because it casts off all of the stereotypes you might have recognized. If you don't look at her eyes and really listen to the words, you won't get it. What is remarkable about that video is that they don't feed into the ideas that too many people hold regarding what it must be like to be an Indian. The museum mentality. This is a fully modern kid in the mainstream, except she's doing what a lot of American Indians do now--she's playing word games ("using the enemy's language") trying to jolt you out of your complacency. It seems to be working. SRS |

14 Dec 06 - 03:35 PM (#1909658) Subject: RE: BS: Get your priorities straight From: SharonA Wolfgang's point is well taken. This is an advertisement, and the child actress is reading advertising copy. While some of the statements in that advertising copy may have more than a grain of truth to them, it angers me that a child was forced to read the copy. Unlike dianavan, I don't find it "very funny" at all. A child that age cannot possibly make independent decisions about what to watch or listen to. It is the responsibility of her parents and/or guardians to raise her to think independently and responsibly, and to protect her from propaganda and the media blitz in the meantime, not to exploit her for their gain... and certainly not to put profanity into her mouth for her to spout precociously. As for the uncle's statement, I started to listen to it but closed the window after the second f-word came out of his mouth. I suppose he talks that way in front of his niece, too. Some "child-advocacy" group should remove that child from the people who are abusing her acting skills, and place her with people who are not willing to sacrifice her on the altar of the Almighty Dollar. |

SRS - I don't buy the opinion that this is an 'American Indian' point of view. I know plenty of human beings that have the same point of view and no Native ancestry. You don't have to be Native to believe that worshipping trees makes more sense than worshipping the multicoloured Jesus. Nor is it entirely Native to believe that European Christians slaughtered thousands in the Americas and elsewhere. I also do not agree that the child and her uncle Aboriginal. Lots of people have dark hair and eyes. I did not associate this video with Native Americans in any way. I wish they would start using the media more to get their point of view accross but I think its a big leap to call this an Indian point of view. As a commercial for a band, it rocks. Besides that, its funny. |
|
16 Dec 06 - 05:57 PM (#1911320) Subject: RE: BS: Get your priorities straight From: Stilly River Sage You don't usually buy anything I say; it's uncommon that this should appeal to both of us. I'm just stating a fact, that this is an American Indian family who don't buy industrial religion, the christian dogma in particular. This group does a lot of "signifying."
It may be best known as an African American form of word play, but it exists within many marginalized cultures. If you look beyond the performance (which I am convinced that child DOES understand) you'll see "Little Buffalo Men" listed at the end as a clue, along with a lead singer called Yellow Thunder Woman:
The Bastard Fairies could be termed an oxymoron. If this is the case then their music is most definitely oxymoronic. Naughty but nice, sweet and sour, beautifully macabre, wonderfully morose. Like a baby with a razor blade, it'll hug you then cut you with no warning. Lead singer Yellow Thunder Woman, fiercly intelligent and clearly disturbed is that baby, assigned to take you through the many trials of life and understand that, no matter who you are, or where you've come from, we are all f**ked up and twisted and each of us a bastard fairy in our own little way. She is Native American, a direct decendant of the Great Ponca Chief Standing Bear, an Indian princess and member of the Yankton Sioux. In the Lakota language sioux means snake in the grass and Yellow Thunders inner soul is just that. She's the sort of girl who you could take to meet your ultra conservative, christian parents and appear to them to be the most perfect sweet little thing. Then, just when you think you're safe, up jumps that snake and bites into your mothers neck. Injecting her central nervous system with venomous tales of how to give great blow jobs and having extra marital affairs. But before you know it, shes served up an antidote of pure cute and all fellatious thoughts are gone. However, be aware that like herpes of the mouth it lurks in the shadows of one's concience waiting to strike and there is no cure. Life is very short and death is very long so come on friends lets embrace our own little peculiarities and become part of the Bastard Fairy family. link. SRS |

Instead, it seemed you were drawing conclusions based on the clip. I do not agree that the message is exclusively an American Indian point of view. Its a point of view that people from many different cultures share. In other words, Empires who have grown strong through acts of genocide deserve no respect. Religions who have become tools of the oppressors do not deserve respect. Not all Natives believe this and many non-natives do. |

18 Dec 06 - 09:49 PM (#1913231) Subject: RE: BS: Get your priorities straight From: dianavan Maybe the reason you don't "get along" with me is that you don't seem to understand that whether or not they are Native, it has little or nothing to do with their message or their point of view. I don't understand what you mean when you talk about a Native point of view. Are you saying all Natives think alike? I also know that our eyes and ears do not see and hear the same thing. I would not have known they were Native from the video clip alone. My original post had absolutely nothing to do with whether they were Native. That was your argument.
