I also miss Calvin & Hobbes. One of the truly great comics. I admire his willingness to stop before it got stale, though. I would hate to have seen it turn into Peanuts. For about the first five years Peanuts was really fantastic and was pretty good for a while after that. It became awful long before he quit doing it. For some reason the ones that still run in the papers are the awful ones from the later years. That won't happen with Calvin & Hobbes or, so it seems, Foxtrot (which I also think is quite good).

Trivia note: Cartoonist Bill Amend (rhymes with Raymond)majored in physics at Amherst. He never had a pet iguana.

More trivia: Darby Conley and Stephan Pastis also went to Amherst.

I have Calvin & Hobbes, Doonesbury, Garfield, Bloom County and Pogo collections that I keep in the bathroom and read over & over & over. I need "Shoe" and a few others to keep me supplied. (I even have George Booth collections from "The New Yorker")

Haw DARE these cartoonists think they can quit, die and change without asking US?

I found the "The Far Side" much better in collection form. Reading them one after another really builds the humour better than single installments.

Vivid memories or rolling around on the floor laughing one Christmas afternoon, reduced to laughing fits by a Far Side collection Xmas gift.

Of course I was drinking that day.

I like Foxtrot, too, and hate to lose the dailies.
I do not like most of the current politically based comics, either right or left, because they are not subtle, not nuanced and mostly not funny. Those who write them ought to go back to the roots to a Pogo, or even later L'il Abner. They didn't skewer directly, they didn't use real names but iconic (probably not the best word choice here)representations of their targets. And skewer them they did!

I have Bloom County, Far Side, Outland, Foxtrot, Dilbert, Pogo, Shoe, Moose Goose and Grimm, Boondocks, Sherman's Lagoon, Unshelved, Pearls Before Swine, Get Fuzzy, Zits, and some For Better or Worse -- at least that's what I can think of right now. There are also some others.

I read Baldo, Rose Is Rose, Big Nate, Kudzu, Luann, Tundra, Little Abner, Jumpstart, Get Fuzzy, and Liberty Meadows daily on the Internet.

I have an autographed copy of the first "Calvin & Hobbes" book and I watched Bill Watterson sign it so I know it's genuine.

Last Christmas my wife gave me the collected Calvin and Hobbes. The three-volume set.

Calvin and Hobbes was pure genius.

On the Far Side. One of my college mates met Gary Larsen at a signing. As a Phd in Engineering he was always sort of bugged by the fake blackboard calculations Larsen would have his mad scientists scrawling, so he wrote out a bunch of sensible equations Larsen could use to look 'correct'. I don't know if they got used or not.

I myself have a Life in Hell calendar signed by Matt Groening from before he became famous for the original episodes of The Simpsons on the Tracy Ullman show (and from when Life in Hell was funny...its not been for a long time)
