Show of Hands have just been awarded the title, 'Greatest Devonians Ever', beating Sir Francis Drake into second place, in a regional poll. Phil Beer voted for Babbage.

I always thought that consensus said insects were the greatest Devonians Ever.

So, which classification do Phil and Steve come into?

That's not fair, there are two of them so they were bound to beat Sir Francis Drake.

:-)

My brother has been involved many years in building houses in Devon, so I would rate him as the greatest Devonian ever.

I'd like to nominate myself for Greatest Pre-Cambrian Ever. Anyone willing to vote for me?

(It's okay if you don't - John Leonard is totting up the ballots, and I fully expect to receive nominations in the categories of Greatest Pleisticene Ever, Greatest Paleolithic Ever, and Greatest Mesozoic Ever.)

My taller (and more bearded) half won the Devon dialect competition at Crediton Folk Festival once - and he's Cornish!
I would have thought that Charles Babbage would have been up there as a great Devonian, seeing as how the world cannot now seem to do anything without a computer....................
It seems there was an engraved trophy for this competition, I would have loved to see them present that to Sir Francis Drake............
But Maybe I am just an old cynic!!!!!
Cheers, Lucy

When I saw 'show of hands - greatest Devonian's ever', I thought, "Aha, this type of democracy died in the early Thatcher years!" What a silly boy, but I bet the Smoothies would have been round the crowd whipping for the right decision.

So it is the trio nominated as the best duo for the BBC F&A awards. I like the sound of the new costumes that they will have to wear - cheers Shambles.

Drake...the Armada.....stopped Spanish invasion....after calmly finishing his bowls game.... Babbage/Rae/Davis/Smythe....James Thorne...founded Shebbear College....Show of hands...great singers/performers but hardly the greatest Devonians ever.

To be fair, SOH don't really think they are the 'Greatest Ever Devonians' either. They were nominated and voted as such by their army of fans, and Steve was the first to admit it's a load of b...aloney. Phil said he voted for Babbage. It's just a bit of harmless fun, and of course a bit more publicity for them.

I thought Baring-Gould might have been a candidate for that, Villan. I was later put right by our most knowlegable Devonian (who's name might lead one to think of Cornwall) contributer. Apparently he collected songs so that they could be locked away in dark corners of museums so they may never be seen or heard again by mere mortals.

He along with others were almost succesful in this evil plot but they were finaly thwareted entirely by the efforts of Show Of Hands who against all odds restored English traditional folk music to the general public.

I still want to know why they had an engraved trophy for an award which could technically have gone to somebody who is dead! Or did someone know it would go to the living?
Where was this vote cast and by whom? I live on the Devon and Cornwall border and never heard of it!
I have nothing against Show of Hands, but I can think of more worthy winners for such an accolade, which I am sure they were delighted to have bestowed upon them! Devon has an awful lot to sing about, and they are doing that at least!
Cheers, Lucy

And it's not double cream, but clotted cream, although living in Cornwall we do have the superior variety1!! [duck] Phil Beer voted for Babbage and Steve reckoned that they only beat Drake into second place cos he hadn't been on tour recently.....

Here's my vote for Bendigo, who played a staring part in that venerable traditional ballad "Dead Dog Scrumpy:"

So if you're down in Devon and you goes into a bar
Just call for Dead Dog Scrumpy, it's the best there is by far;
Refuse all imitations, you'll sleep just like a log,
You can always recognize it by the hair of the dog!

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

"Devon has a lot to sing about"

Well yes, yes she does. And a very good job she does of it too. She's my pick for greatest Devonian (missing the point again completely). But then, I'm her Mum and Mums are like that.............some of them. LOL
