Dec. Shanty/Seasonal Song Session (NH)

Better late than never, but the monthly shanty/forebitter and, for this month only, seasonal song session will be happening at the Press Room in Portsmouth, NH, this Saturday, 16 December from 3:30 to 7:30 PM.

It would be really swell if those planning to attend would post here so as to attract other singers and song lovers . Thanks -- Tom

So, Tom, are Holiday Sea Shanty parodies welcome?

Judy and I are planning to attend. It's one way we save money on postage for holiday cards.

In concrete and glass,
Portland's disappearing fast;
'Tis all gone for profit and for plunder;
Though we really want to stay,
They keep forcing us away,
Now across them western suburbs
        we must wander!

I'm not sure why this old anti-urban renewal ditty, originally from Sydney, Australia, is running through my brain this morning. Maybe it's because that nice real estate lady Deb is attending, TRUBRIT above, and it's one way I can combine her real estate interests with this parody of the old forebitter "All For Me Grog." We used the same parody for a successful referendum campaign in the 1980's in support of Portland's working waterfront.

I know this may provoke giant hordes of opportunistic parkers to descend upon Portsmouth. In the spirit of the season (people buying lots of stuff downtown), parking is free. Meters are inoperative, but I believe the parking garage is still charging. Keep in mind that you're competing for street parking with the hordes... and the pedestrians. (I think the limit is one per license.)

Metered street parking may be free, but rumor has it that they're enforcing the two hour limit -- which means everybody running out of the pub to swap parking spots for their respective vehicles.

Now THAT could use a shanty!

Charlie, great parody! Giok, will you be there on Saturday? Love to meet you....and yes, I can sell ice to Eskimos -- BUT ONLY IF THE ESKIMOS NEED IT.... otherwise, I won't do it!! Ethics are such a bore but one MUST have them! (but I did sink last time I tried to walk on water -- I have to practice more).....

WE've just got back from Portsmouth and an amazing session.

Being the seasonal event there were a number of Christmas songs as well as the shanties and forebitters. Mary did Silent night and Tom did a great version of The Holly and the Ivy. Linn was great with the Cherry Tree Carol - one of my favourites.

TRUBRIT (Debora) came with us today and I think that we have another addict. She wants to know when the sessions are and will cut short her working day to get there!

Now, if we coud sabotage the kitchen radio......

Great session. I would have sung "Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer" but Jeri's new song forbade it! Everyone was in rare form tonight. A wonderful mix of shanties, Christmas songs, Greek ballads, whatever. Thank you all!

Jacqui - you're in trouble! DeboraHHHH has an "H".

What a wonderful evening.....if I am not very careful, I am going to allow singing to move WORK out of the # 1 priority in my life.....!!!!!

I did try and silence the waitress -- asked her to turn the radio down as I could not hear the music which she did but then the banging of the plates started......

Charlie - it was great to hear the whole parody about Portland rather than the one verse you quoted earlier.

Giok -- where were you??

Parking in Portsmouth is horrible -- I am so grateful to the powers that be that did not ticket my car sitting in a 15 minute place for about 3 hours ---- must be the Christmas spirit??

Mary - you are right -- there is an H in my name -- now I know who to blame for the fact that my badge at the Getaway was misspelt ( Jaqui ?????) Debora -- PUHLEESE.....I don't think so!!!! But of course my Mudcat name has a spelling error too so perhaps it is endemic. Funny - when we lived in the UK for five years I remember thinking one day -TruBrit would be a neat license plate if no one else has it. And no one else did - so it's mine. No thought at all about a possible business name........but it surely does work....

Linn, Charlie, Jeri, and everyone - great to see you.

Mr. Finn - I noticed a distinct lack of ice and no opportunity to practice my water walking skills. Nice to see you.

Yes, it was an amazing session. Good mix of sea music and seasonal songs. And some delightful parodies and humorous songs. I run out of superlatives for the harmonies -- wow!

Deborah, I think both you and Mike may be able to deduct any expenses incurred as a business expense. (It was real estate day at the session -- I finally got to meet one of my advertisers and introduce him to Deborah as well.)

Well, it was sure nice to see the Press Room crew again yesterday. Missed last month due to work, Adventure work, school event and a JR concert in Rockport. Yes Mary...there is another Rockport in Massachusetts. It was a very good session indeed. Nice to see that everyone was in good health and in good voice. We celebrated Christmas yesterday and were a bit late for the session. With this behind us we can look forward to a slower paced weekend ahead of us....right! Just finished an update of our Adventure restoration that will be posted this week...check out the website in a few days www.schooner-adventure.org
Music this coming weekend and New Years for us.
Hope to make Portland in January....it will be a good winter break and well needed.
Mary....we will be expecting the same voyeur to be at the window this year.
Kendall...we are thinking of you. Be well.
Tom and Linn...thanks for a great year of music, fun and friendship.

The doryman and his mate.
***
By the way...on the way home....the trooper who stopped us had no sense of humor when I showed him the replica of the Lewis and Clark axe that was in the back seat...no sense of humor at all. I finally explained to him that it was an instrument that could be used on a banjo to improve tone quality. We were on our way...with an escort!!!

So that's what they do to folk singers these days. That's what I do to lobsters,,,,,,before eating them.

Sorry about the ice Deb, maybe next time you can demonstrate your water walking skills down by the riverside.

It was a very nice session, lots of interesting songs & lots of interesting people. Folks baring gifts, folks baring arms I even thought I saw some folks baring breasts but maybe that was the kitchen cook paying off her delivery tab for her called in supper. The cook orders out & blasts the radio, time for her to cash in on her chips & toss her to the fishes.
The cook's the one that starts banging plates when you ask to turn down the kitchen music.

Mary, whats the date for your next concert, Deb Cowen, you say?

Nice to see the Dorymates again (isn't it 2 mates per dory?). Peter what did the tropper stop you for in the first place or were you walking the street with the tomahawk in your hand? An axe is a tool, what you got there is a 2 1/2' long weapon used to cut flesh & bone not wood & that thing can be tossed too. And yes you can sing whatever you want & whenever too, as long as you got that thing in your hand you can whistle "Dixie" for all I care.

Actually, according to http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/13098c.htm
he was martyred on Dec. 10th. And "In 1970, John Roberts was canonized by Pope Paul VI as one of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales, whose joint feastday is kept on 25 October."

This site also has a link to costumes so you can "dress up as a Religious character" (that's what it says!).

This one Trawsfynydd (scroll down) says December 15th. And I found another site that said his day was Dec. 9th.

St. JOHN ROBERTS

One of the 40 Martyrs of England and Wales who was canonized in 1970. He was born at Rhiwgoch, Trawsfynydd in 1577, and was probably baptized at the St. Madryn's church in the village. It is mentioned that his family lived at either Gelli Goch or Tyddyn Gwladus. He was reared a Protestant and on the 26th February 1595/6 enlisted in St. Johns College, Oxford. He then travelled the continent and whilst in Paris turned Catholic.

In 1599 he went to St. Benedict Abbey, Valladolid; he then went on to novitate at Santiago de Compostela, about the end of 1600. He joined the Benedictine faith and adopted then name Fray Juan de Mervinia, brother John from Merioneth. He was ordained and went out on the English mission on the 26th December 1602 - he was the first monk to return to England after Henry VIII closed the monasteries. He was four or five times detained by the authorities, but on each occasion following a short term in prison he was deported. During this period he made a name for himself in London for helping people who were suffering from the plague. He again returned but was arrested and convicted of high treason. He was executed by being hung, drawn and quartered at Tyburn, London on the 10 December 1610.
St John was blessed on the 15th December 1929, and canonized on the 25th of October 1970.

I hope John knows about St. John Roberts day....maybe I should let him know before he reads that he died many years ago and it was a horrible death. I wonder if he knows.....he's held himself together pretty well for all these years after what he went through!
I am on my way to becoming a "mummer" tonight. I'll find out when I get there....
Many people call me that or something like it..

Hey mummer! What's a NEANDERTHAL? So you got spotted at a toll booth? And to think that they let all those Massholes with shotguns & rifles mounted on their rear windows pass right on bye even incourage them to come up to hunt who knows what, go figure. But then you were leaving not coming. Next time mount it on your hood. You sang to the trooper too, there's your problem. Did you sing before you got spotted & which couple of verses did you sing? I gotta send you back to Smart Street School & learn you how not to attract to your self. See you in "Hide the Red Flag" class 101.

John's no saint, though he's well preserved, cause I know he's been jarred 3 times, probably stewed too & pickled once. But hung, drawn & quarted now that's not like 'em.

Mary revise that doll a bit to one that has a good heart.

Would Trawsfynydd possibly be in Wales, John? We recently counted 3476 sheep there when we were wandering about last October. We may have missed one or two.

We got to Hay-on Wey, Brecon, Swansea, Llangennith, Fish Guard, Llangollen, and many other places which we would hesitate to try to spell. We had a great time, even if we couldn't pronounce where we were!

Been a long day ..... lots of notes here. Mr. Finn - I'll forgive you for the lack of ice -- I think you have an obsession with lobsters that needs careful consideration. Love to walk by the riverside - practicing those water walking skills as we speak (oh God, I haven't sold a house for a whole week - perhaps I am losing my magic touch..........??? Eeek).

Didn't realize the cook was the evil one and not the waitress - just like in Alica in Wonderland -- remember the cook? 'Speak softly to your little boy, and beat him when he sneezes; he only does it to annoy because he knows it teases .... wah, wah, wah.....'

Charley - those Welsh are fiendish -- they spell things like that just to annoy the rest of us (like Alice's cook!?). NO ONE can pronounce Welsh names - but what a country......, what a gorgeous country -- I can claim it when I am British, but not of course, when I am English!!!

Hay-on-Wye is a lovely little border town that someone transformed into a used book store a number of years ago - once one got going successfully, other people joined in, and that's about all there is in the town. I found my copy of the Susann Palmer hurdy-gurdy book there - I am convinced that by the time I walked from the shop that gave me the info to the shop that actually had a copy, the price had doubled.

I don't know who gave the Welsh their spelling, but it's far more phonetic than English - remember that "w" is a vowel with a "oo" sound. But there are enough native Welsh speakers on this forum who would explain it far better than I.

(Reminder to self - must learn some Welsh chanteys).

Hay-on-Wye, of course!

And was in the Black Lion Inn that provided such a scrumptious lunch, and ale?

Whatever.

I did find a mint copy of an early C. Fox Smith book there, LANCASHIRE HUNTING TALES AND OTHER MOORLAND LAYS (1909), that I didn't have. Unfortunately, few of the shops had computerized their inventories and one had to go through every shelf, which would have taken years to accomplish, to complete the search, and by that time inventories would be refilling in the previous shops...

The Town is, indeed, a bookbuyers dream/nightmare and someone should compose an appropriate song.
