BS: Stupid Thread

12 Dec 06 - 10:35 PM (#1908009)
Subject: BS: Stupid Thread
From: Beer

I was digging in my seldom used music books and came up with a song that was made popular by the great "Hank Williams" called "I'll Never Get Out of This World Alive". Well does going into space or landing on the moon throw out his theory in song/or otherwise?

No, because he sang "I'll Never..."

And he was right.

What you may not realize, Beer, is that you've gotten into a question of theology and Biblical interpretation here. The writers of the Bible, as men of their time and place, just used "world" to refer to the total cosmos in which they existed; they had no idea that there was anywhere else to go to, other than heaven or hell, and no one could go to either while physically "alive".
More recently, some fundamentalists have screwed up the whole concept. I hve heard it said that man will never reach other planets, because the Bible says "The earth is given to man"; which supposedly means, by implication, that man will never be allowed to inhabit any other planet.
Hank, in this instance, was using "world" in the older, Biblical, sense.

I hve heard it said that man will never reach other planets, because the Bible says "The earth is given to man"; which supposedly means, by implication, that man will never be allowed to inhabit any other planet.

But the earth wasn't given to all those other critters that are here, and they're all here. So man can go, but will just be somebody's puppy on another planet?

Rub my tummy. I'll bark (or purr). Just cut out those nasty experiments. 1It took me along time to get over the last visitors.

If God (or a store owner) said to me, "this guitar is given to you", it would not mean that no one else can have any other guitar...and it would not mean that I cannot at some point have another guitar. ;-)

Old sixy, I guess it's kind of stupid to argue about the relevance of certain posts to a BS "Stupid Thread," but I can be stupid as the best of 'em. But my post was relevant--at least--to your post: I had precedence, you had none; I had justification, you had squat.

Besides, my quote could be interpreted as a comment on the human imperialistic conceit that we have the right to go on and fuck up other planets, even before we have finished fucking ours up...an extension of the human imperialistic conceit that we Americans have the right to go fuck up other countries even while we are doing such a good job fucking up ours. Not that I had that in mind when posting, but now that I think of it, it's quite relevant, particularly in relation to the original quote I had in mind: "Son of a gun, we have big fun on the bayou."

I had a loose thread on my jeans.

So I grabbed it and tried to break it off.

But it pulled out a little more.

So I wrapped it around my finger and gave it a quick hard pull to break it off.

But it pulled out lots more of the thread.

Then my pants fell off.

And I tripped over them.

And my penis went into a naked lady that just happened to be there. Total accident.

I was just getting up when you came into the room, honey.

Little Hawk, you just don't have the hang of proper conservative Biblical interpretation. It's not based on fallible human logic, it's based on inspired spiritual discernment. For another instance:

The Old Testament says you should never harness an oxen and a mule as a team. That obviously means that people of different races shouldn't marry one another. But, in recent years, lots of liberal, apostate, so-called "Christians" have tried to rationalize away this God given wisdom, thereby threatening to tear apart the very fabric of civilization.... DAMNED GODLESS LIBERALS! ...

All LH was yacking about was some guitar store God owned and his taking advantage of a customer who suffered from GAS.

I kind of doubt the Old Testament said that, _oxen_ being the plural of _ox_.

I think --in its corrected form--it means people of different sexes shouldn't be harnessed together. Lord, the trouble I get into harnessed to a woman...

Does this mean an oxen and a mules shouldn't be harnessed together either? When I'm fully awake, I actually do know the singular and plural forms for the critters. And I know so many bizarre fundamentalist Biblical interpretations, with simple language turned inside out to (supposedly) support notions and prejudices, that there's no way to say which example stands out.

frogprince, chazkratz, and Peace: You guys are forgetting one important thing: mules are virtually always sterile! So isn't the Old Testament metaphor warning the virile against marrying the sterile and faling to obey God's command (to Adam and Eve) to replenish the earth?

Bobad: After I posted I looked up the Bible verse (Deuteronomy 22:10) which actually says "an ox and an ass" -- the modern translations say "an ox and a donkey" -- so based on your point about the ox, maybe I had it backwards. Okay, then, the ox is the sterile one and the donkey is the virile one, but my point remains that the verse may well be talking about the failure to produce offspring.

Back to the Biblical word "ass" for a moment (okay, so I'm anal-retentive): here's a site explaining the different ways in which the word is used in the Bible, and the different words from which the English word "ass" was translated. The verse from Deuteronomy is listed under the original word "Chamor", meaning "the male ass", so obviously the authors weren't talking about a sterile mule.

Holman Bible Dictionary -- Ass

Unfortunately, I can't find the same sort of dissection of the word "ox" on that site.

Anyway, according to frogprince's earlier post of 12 Dec 06 - 10:55 PM, I guess I should be trying to look up "world" or "earth" on that site.

An ass and an ox are two different species of animal. Hitched together the ox could pull much more weight than the Ass.
As far as humans go, we are all the same species, and unlike asses and oxen we can interbreed regardless of color.
If God had wanted it otherwise there would be a barrier to keep the races separate.

Absolutely true story: Thirty years ago, I read the "triumphal entry" story in a little conservative church on Palm Sunday. I was advised that this was the one scripture passage that they would rather not have read from the King James; they were uncomfortable with "that word".

And mules are sterile.

Although exceptions are infrequently seen, this is not strictly true. The offspring of a mule's conception are almost always "degenerate" to the point of being useless, and are invariably "destroyed" at birth by competent breeders.

Exceptions to the general tendency toward sterility are more common in hinnys than in mules, but hinnys are considered so marginally useful that few of them are bred (except by rare accident), hence little opportunity among livestock handlers and breeders to know how useful any offspring might be.

File under useless information, hence suitability for a stupid thread that would have remained dead without the SPAM refresh.
