Road Kill Cafe
by John Flynn

Don't touch that brake, don't turn that wheel,
The life you save could be our next meal.
Four-legged critters make tasty dinners,
Went something splatters, we'll make a platter.

CHO:
At the Road Kill Cafe,
We'll do it up your way.
We'll cook it fresh right from your grill to ours,
Just scrape it off the tire and we'll toss it on the fire.
Come chew the fat at the Road Kill Cafe.

A gentle swerve makes a squirrel hors d'oeuvres,
You just can't beat a - fresh raccoon pita.
That mangled Chevy parked by the door,
Meant Bambi Parmesan for thirty-four.

CHO:
Tag:

We love it when you run down our menu,
Come chew the fat at the Road Kill Cafe.

I only sing this when they're serving dinner at the show.

Amusing, Roger....

Somebody actually opened a restaurant here in Windsor, Ont. by that name. I don't think it lasted very long....

Try searching the DT for this topic. I seem to remember a delightful lullaby by Margaret McArthur about what Daddy's going to bring home for baby to eat. Others too. Taste never a problem here, as we have none.
Blessings,
Barbara

Well--Just goes to show there's nothing new under the sun. After a 400 mile trip to PA last year when I saw something on the order of 50 dead deer scattered variously in the breakdown lane, the travel lanes, the median divider, and had one bounced off my car by an 18-wheeler, I wrote a tune I called "Road Kill Blues." Seriously, it was one of those gruesome trips where, had it appeared in a movie, the audience would have been shouting "TURN BACK, you idiot!!!"

Oh well--we can't all be original all the time!

There seem to be several songs with the same title.

ROADKILL CAFE
Lance Romance*

1. Well, c'mon down to the Roadkill Cafe.
You never can tell what's from the highway today.
There's always good food on the old buffet.
They got armadillo pie and squirrel souffle.

CHORUS: Down at the Roadkill Cafe, you always get a good meal.
At the Roadkill Cafe, you always get a good deal.
At the Roadkill Cafe, it don't take much of your pay.
You kill it. We'll grill it. You can eat it today.

2. If you hit a deer or run over a skunk,
Don't despair, just put 'em in the trunk.
Bring 'em on down to the Roadkill Cafe.
One man's mistake is another's gourmet.

3. Don't worry your head if it's not Grade-A beef.
This stuff's got protein and cholesterol relief.
It's almost fat free and don't cost a thing.
Sometimes it's better than Burger King.

[Recorded by the Hillbilly Hellcats on "Our Brand" (1998)]

Tone Deaf Leopard also do a song with that title, but with rather different lyrics!

Roads don't kill; drivers do!

These songs do remind me of our eclectic restaurant that flourished on the shores of Moosehead Lake here in Maine for many a year. The menus kept disappearing from the tables. I'm sure I have one stored somewhere.

Was that a toad in the road?

Cheerily,

There are apparently a *bunch* of songs by that name. One I've heard mentions the chef, Monsiuer "Wheels" Pierre, and talks about Centerline Bovine, Hunk of Skunk, Rack of Raccoon "all smothered in gunk," Poodles with Noodles and some Smear of Deer, "but it's the Awesome Possum keeps you comin' back here!" Sorry, I don't remember it well enough, and I haven't been able to find it online.
